Abstract

Short story is a type of popular literature in Indonesia. In short stories, love is one of the most well-known topics for the Indonesian audience. Amongst various types of love, a mother’s love is talked about the most. Thus, I decide to analyze how mothers express their love for their children in a compilation book titled Rectoverso. Also, I discover the consequences that the mothers experience due to their choices regarding love. By using the theory of love and the concept of motherly love from the book “The Art of Loving” by Erich Fromm, I find that the mothers have to face several choices that can give impacts toward their children and themselves. Every decision they make is caused by their love toward their children. Furthermore, the mothers prioritize their children instead of themselves. The impacts they experience may be positive or negative, depending on the situation. Keywords: short story, love, mothers, motherly love

Abstract

Commercial is an advertising strategy to promote a product or service effectively through mass media. It is also attractive because it touches the audience’s emotion through its music, cinematography, and storytelling. However, commercial has hidden meaning and this meaning represents the brand as symbols which distinct itself and its users to other brands’. I analyze Apps We Can’t Live Without (2014) commercial as the text to show Apple encodes meaning and transmit it to the society. Using film language and Bourdieu’s cultural capital theory, the findings show that the symbols from the commercial bring into a conclusion that Apple as a brand is a symbolic capital, specifically cultural capital. The people who has the brand is considered to have higher position in its fields which are Apple and gadget communities.

Abstract

This thesis deals with the anxieties experienced by the leaders of superhero teams in Civil War II, Iron Man and Captain Marvel. Through their anxieties in Civil War II, I tried to reveal the causes of their anxieties and their ways to reduce these uneasy feelings. To analyze the causes of these two characters’ anxieties, I used two of the theory of anxiety, reality and moral anxiety. I found that there are two causes that make Iron Man feel anxieties which are the reaction of Captain Marvel towards Ulysses’ prophecies and his responsibility both as a superhero and as a leader to protect people from the outcome of Ulysses’ prophecies. On the other hand, Captain Marvel also feels anxieties from the blame of Iron Man and her responsibility both as a superhero and as a public officer to protect people from dystopian future. Iron Man uses two defense mechanisms, which are splitting and rationalization. On the other hand, Captain Marvel also uses two defense mechanism, which are idealization and rationalization. These defense mechanisms are used by both, Iron Man and Captain Marvel to ease their reality and moral anxiety.

Abstract

When we talk about bullying, the focus is usually about the victim and exploring how will the victim survive from that and how he overcomes that problem. However, the creative work that I make is different from the usual story. In my creative work, the point of view of story will be from a teenager who commits the bullying. In my story, it will talk about why my main character commits the bullying until he killed his classmate. He does not realize that he is manipulated by his friend and also his upper classmate called Max. The story will reveal why Ronald can become a bully in senior high. The main theme that is used in this work is how guilt changes a person’s personality and way of thinking. His desire to get acknowledgement when he enters senior high and does not want to repeat the same experience in junior high makes him become a bully in senior high. The story is presented through the genre of psychology and focuses on bullying and story behind it. Keywords: bullying, bully-victim, frenemy, Difficult home life, crime.

Abstract

This paper is basically a study of depression. Through the study on Susanna Kaysen’s Girl, Interrupted!, I intend to analyze the effects of cruel punishment in the mental hospital to Susanna Kaysen, the main character in the novel. In order to fulfill the goal of this thesis, I use psychological theory on depression to analyze the novel. Finally, I conclude that Susanna becomes more depressed after she enters the mental hospital and sees the cruel punishment in there. The cruel punishments can be classified into two groups. They are mental and physical torture. In the novel, Susanna experiences both of them that make her feel more depressed than before she enters the mental hospital. In other words, watching the cruel punishment or torture can make a healthy person becomes depressed and depressed person becomes more depressed. Therefore, a person should avoid watching anything cruel in the television, radio, newspaper, and society so that they will not get depressed or more depressed by it
