Abstract

Crash shows the life of a community in a multicultural city of Los Angeles in a variety of separate scenes. At the end of the story will be seen a common thread that connects each of the characters and events that they experience with other characters. The interaction of the players in the movie Crash is highly dominated by racial conflict as a result of racism. In the society nowadays, most people usually see racism only by how the majority discriminate the minority like what is reflected in Crash without knowing that Crash also portrays as vividly how the minority react towards the discrimination by the majority. For this reason, I am really interested in analyzing how the minority react towards racial discrimination by the majority and how the main characters of the minority react towards racism by the majority in Crash based on John P. Myers definition of reactions which are deviance, defiance, and avoidance

Abstract

In indirect advertising, an advertisement does not boldly show the products on the video. The object of the study in this thesis is a video advertisement of a clothing line, H&M, consisting a story about a family in the holiday season. This thesis aims to show that commercials of H&M “A Magical Holiday” uses multimodality in order to attract the audience through six modes: linguistic, audio, spatial, oral, visual, and gestural modes. In this study, I analyzed the modes by Multimodal Discourse Analysis by Kress and Leeuwen onto the six modes to analyze the advertisement, using the study by Chan and Chia on modes in multimodality. This research is using qualitative analysis by Schreier (2012) since it deals with the connection between all the semiotic modes to bring the message of the advertisement. I analyzed the data by putting the scenes into 6 tables based on the modes. After that, I analyzed the interrelation between each modes. Based on the analysis, the modes helped the advertisers to convey the real message of the video. Beyond the moral message of the story, the advertisement is a marketing tool to promote their products. Key Words: indirect advertising, multimodal discourse analysis, semiotic modes, H&M

Abstract

This paper explains the processes and the result of my final project in a form of screenplay entitled Metamorphosis. The screenplay is a story of a man, Johan Tanuwijaya who transforms from a psychologically sound man to a psychologically disturbed man. To develop my story, I used trauma as one of the themes and the theories. At first, he experienced traumatic childhood, then he recovered until his adulthood and marriage life, where he married his dire attention-seeker wife, Renata. Slowly, he was thrown back to his childhood trauma and that drove him insane. Eventually, he killed his wife and he created another himself in his daughter. From this screenplay I expect that people will have new principles and views about domestic violence and abuse, so that Indonesian society will have improvements in the future

Abstract

This study discusses the use of translation strategies in translating Indonesian culture-bound words in two Indonesia tourism website articles. By using a descriptive qualitative analysis method, the translation strategies found in the Indonesian culture-bound words were observed using the theory from Mona Baker (2018). The rank of the most dominant strategies, from the most frequent to the least, used by both translator teams of Wonderful Indonesia and Enjoy Jakarta are loan word with an explanation, word-for-word, cultural substitution, and general word. In the Indonesia culture-bound translation, the most strategy used the culture-bound words is loan word strategy. It is better because instead of translating the Indonesia culture-bound word, the writer keep the culture-bound word in the english version and explain the meaning of the culture-bound word from explaining the history or the ingredients behind the culture-bound words so the international tourists can know the meaning behind the Indonesia culture-bound words without changing the names. In conclusion, both translator teams mostly used loan word strategy as their main strategy in the English translation, but still used other strategy in certain Indonesia culture-bound words. Keywords: translation, translation strategies, culture-bound words

Abstract

This Business Communication Final Project (BCFP) is made for PT. Mandiri Sekuritas, one of the biggest securities company in Indonesia. The background of the study is the fact the most of the Online Service product’s members are passive, or also called as “sleeping clients”. This problem can affect the AR (Assets Ratio) of the company because they are passive traders. Thus, PT. Mandiri Sekuritas needs to make a promotional video. The video will be uploaded in big websites such as YouTube and e-mail. The video is divided into two parts: The first part is dedicated to the people who are new to stocks and the second part is dedicated to the existing members of Mandiri Sekuritas but rarely do anything with their account. In the video, I highlight two things: the importance of joining stock investment and the importance of being active in stocks trading. By making this video, I want to tell all people especially those who are at young age that investment is important for their future and Mandiri can answer their needs very well. Also, those “sleeping clients” can realize that being active will bring them many benefits and that the company cares for them.

Abstract

Open Heart is a screenplay under a romantic comedy drama subgenre, which recounts a romantic tale about a monogamous, lonely, single man who is struggling to accept and exercise an open heart during a novel participation in polyamory that the woman he falls for is involved with. In this project, I investigated why my protagonist join a polyamorous courtship and how he handles the common hurdles in consensually non-monogamous (CNM) experiences, specifically, jealousy and stigma-based shame. I answered these problems using findings from polyamory, romantic jealousy and Gregory M. Herek’s sexual stigma concepts. The results determine that my protagonist only agrees to polyamory out of compliance. Also, in order to solve his plights, he needs to uphold particular management for jealousy and shame. Hopefully, by showcasing these issues around non-monogamy and polyamory, I wish my story could promote a wider understanding, along with uncovering the oppression still targeting them. Keywords: Polyamory, consensual non-monogamy, CNM, romantic comedy, romantic jealousy, sexual stigma
