Abstract

This thesis focuses on the journey of Sinbad, the main character of Magi: Adventure of Sinbad and Magi: Labyrinth of Magic Manga series. These manga series present the adventure of an ordinary young boy named Sinbad who will go through several stages in his journey in order to become a hero. The result of undergoing those stages will affect Sinbad’s personality change process. Because of this, I am interested in analyzing the process of Sinbad’s personality change in his journey to become a hero. I use the monomyth theory to analyze the process of Sinbad’s journey, and the theory of personality development to analyze Sinbad’s personality change throughout his journey. First, I am going to analyze Sinbad’s personality before he embarks on his journey, second, I am going to analyze the process of his personality change, and lastly, I discuss Sinbad’s personality after his journey. Keywords: Journey, Personality Change, Hero

Abstract

My novel #nofilter follows Mia, a photo model who is pretty famous on the social media platform Instagram, as she meets Kyle, her online boyfriend for the first time. In an effort to earn other people’s acceptance, Mia has been building a perfect online persona. However, after meeting Kyle, it is revealed that she is not who she portrays herself to be. As my work revolves on how social media affects someone’s self-esteem, hopefully it can help the readers learn to love themselves and do not depend their self-esteem on others. Specifically, I focus on how Mia maintains an idealized online persona in order to cope with her low self-esteem and earn other people’s acceptance, how the contrast between Mia’s online and real life personas causes her relationship with Kyle to crumble, and how Mia learns to love herself by accepting her weaknesses and acknowledging her positive qualities. For that reason, I use Contingencies of Self-esteem theory by Jennifer Crocker and Connie T. Wole, the Social Comparison theory, and the Presentation of Self in Everyday Life by Erving Goffman. Set in the early years after college, I use New Adult genre and the sub-genre Contemporary Romance to explore Kyle and Mia’s romantic relationship. Keywords: Social media, Instagram, self-esteem, online persona, New Adult, Contemporary Romance

This research investigates the kinship terms produced by strangers towards two young offsprings of inter-ethnic married couples who were used as enticements to generate the production along with the social factors. The data taken from both natural conversations and informal conversational interviews were analyzed using the theories of address Indonesian in Indonesian (John & Stokes, 1977), Javanese (Kuntjara, 2001), Dutch (Matres & Sekel, 2007), and those produced by Chinese-Indonesian (Kuntjara, 2009) and social factors proposed by Holmes (1992) and Wardhaugh (2006). The findings resulted in the mixture of kinship terms from Indonesian, Javanese, Chinese, Dutch, and zero address term which were addressed by strangers to M and F. In addition, addressors mostly considered their own aspects, ethnicity, setting, transactional status and function, and prior knowledge and personal preference as the decisive factors when choosing kinship terms. While the addressee’s aspects, physical features and visible appearance, were the minor factors they took into account.

Abstract

The writer conducted this study to investigate the interactional styles used by the male characters, Ben Whittaker, Jason, Davis, and Lewis in The Intern movie. This study was done by the writer to find the interactional styles used by the male characters when gossiping at the workplace. In conducting this study, the writer used the theory of interactional style by Holmes (2006) and Baxter (2010). Furthermore, this study used a qualitative approach. The result of this study showed that the male characters, Ben Whittaker, Jason, Davis, and Lewis, used all of feminine interactional style when they were gossiping at the workplace. The male characters used facilitative features to increase other speakers’ participations, to show their supportiveness and other-orienteers by using supportive feedback, collaborative, person/process oriented and affectively oriented, and to avoid conflicts by softening the statements using conciliatory features. However, the male characters, Ben Whittaker, Jason, Davis, and Lewis used only five out of seven features of the masculine interactional style. They used competitive, aggressive interruption, confrontational, and direct features to make them straightforward. The male characters also wanted to be credible toward each other, they tended to use referentially oriented features by giving facts. Therefore, the male characters used both feminine interactional styles and masculine interactional styles based on the aims of the gossiping. Keywords: interactional styles, feminine, masculine, gossip, movie

The data of this study are the 34 slogans and/or headlines found in the selected 24 McDonald’s’ written advertisements. The writer used qualitative approach. The theories applied consist of speech act, context and modes, body language, and copywriting. The findings reveal that regarding illocutionary functions, representatives serve as the most frequent type, followed by expressives and directives. The absence of comissives indicates that using promises/threats to promote is not a good promotional strategy. Meanwhile, the absence of declarations indicates the copywriters’ non-existent institutional roles to perform the act. All (34 out of 34) the speech acts have direct relationship between the structural form and communicative function. Keywords: speech acts, slogans, headlines, advertisements.

Abstract

Brotherwood Decoration is a new decoration company based in Surabaya which uses recycled wood as the main material. This Company was just recently established in June 2014. As a new decoration company, there are only a few people who know about this company. Moreover, there are also some decoration companies which are bigger and more experienced than Brotherwood Decoration. Unlike its predecessors, Brotherwood Decoration, as a new company, is less known. Because of that, it does not have as many customers as its predecessors. Therefore, it is better for Brotherwood Decoration to start showing its strengths to more people. To accomplish the goal, a marketing booklet is the best solution to solve the problem in Brotherwood Decoration. There are four parts in this marketing booklet: table of contents, company overview (“About Brotherwood Decoration”), products (“Products”), and company contact information (“Contact Us”). By having these information, the marketing booklet will be able to help Brotherwood Decoration in introducing its hotel, getting more customers, increasing its revenues, and becoming a big decoration company

Abstract

This study was conducted to find out the ways Maudy Ayunda, as the talk show's host, performs requests and responds to Ayu's and Nadiem's requests which have different genders. Also, the analysis was leveled up to the relation of politeness and gender. The main theory used was Watts (2003), focusing on the first-order politeness connected to Indonesian (Javanese) culture. Other supporting theories and studies from Suseno (2003), Kuntjara (2009), and Mills (2003) were used. The method used is a descriptive qualitative approach using utterance/s as the unit of analysis. The findings revealed that Maudy mostly used indirect patterns in conveying the requests and accepted the guests' requests as her response. Several direct patterns were found but could be considered appropriate if analyzed based on the context. Concerning gender, Maudy used more direct patterns to answer Nadiem's requests than Ayu's.Keywords: politeness, first-order politeness, requests, utterance
