Abstract

In teaching English as a foreign language, teachers frequently use authentic materials to teach their students in the classroom. Both in four language skills namely reading, listening, speaking, and writing and language components like grammar and vocabulary. In addition, these kinds of materials have greater influence to enhance students’ foreign language ability because they are introduced directly to the materials which use English as the introductory language.   This paper discusses what is meant by authentic text, kinds of authentic materials, why it is important to use this material, the strengths and weaknesses of using this material in teaching reading to EFL students in relation to the enhancement of students’ reading proficiency. Abstract

Slang is a language that is often used in society. The use of this variety of languages shows that there is a fairly good closeness between the speakers in communication. In this research, it is expected to find out how the description of the use of language, especially the existence of Slang. This study applied the Content Analysis technique. The qualitative descriptive approach is used as the research methodology in this study. This is due to the fact that the researcher analyzed the data descriptively and the conclusion was offered in the form of an explanation of words. From the study, it found that the translator tent to use equivalent words that have similarities in meaning between ST and TT, so it guides the audience easily understood the meaning of Slang words. The translator also tends to use ‘softened word’ in TT in order to avoid the vulgarity and rudeness of ST. In contrast, it also found that the translator did some mistakes in translating slang from ST. This mistake can be avoided by the translator by knowing the cultural background of the slang word first, then looking for relevancy between utterance and context, and last the translator need to pick up the equivalent word in TT that has a similar meaning to the slang word in ST.

Abstract

This study was conducted in order to know the effectiveness of pronunciation achievement based on English songs strategy. This study applied a quasi-experimental research design, specifically non-equivalent control group design. The objectives of the study were to find out whether or not (a) there was significant improvement of students’ pronunciation achievement after being taught by using English songs (b) there was significant difference of pronunciation achievement between the students who were taught by using English songs and those who were not. The population was all the seventh grade students in SMP Srijaya Negara Palembang. This research, the researcher used purposive sampling. The sample was divided into two samples, there were 30 samples for experimental group and 30 samples for control group. The data were collected by using t-test (Paired Samples t-test and Independent Samples t-test). The findings showed that English songs strategy signifcantly improve the students’ pronunciation achievement (T=36.947). In addition, there was significant difference in pronunciation achievement between the students who were taught through English songs strategy and those who were not (T=12.663). Based on this study, it is found that the use of English songs in teaching English is effective to improve the students’ pronunciation and very beneficial for the students in order to facilitate them in learning English. Based on this finding, it is suggested that English songs in teaching English can be recommended for the English teachers.Key word: effect, English songs, pronunciation

Abstract

AbstractIn the field of second language teaching, vocabulary has been one of the most neglected areas in the classroom. That is why there are many students who lacks of vocabulary will find difficulties in language learning process. They will find difficulties in communication. Therefore vocabulary has an important role in communication process both spoken and written. Vocabulary is needed to support a success communication. This study was meant to find out how to improve vocabulary by using onomatopoeic expression in comic and to describe some challenges in using comic as a media of teaching and learning process. This study used a qualitative descriptive analysis. The participants were taken from the students in private classes. The research data is collected by using test (test after the first treatment and test after the second treatment) and by observation for collecting data on the students’ motivation in improving vocabulary mastery using onomatopoeic expression. The data were analyzed by using the descriptive analysis. The result showed that in the first cycle, the students’ average was 65.8, then, on the second treatment, the students’ average increase to be 75.9. It can conclude that teaching vocabulary by using onomatopoeic expression in comic can be used as media to improve students’ vocabulary ability.Keyword : Onomatopoeia, Vocabulary, ComicAbstrakDi dalam bidang pengajaran bahasa kedua, kosakata menjadi salah satu hal yang diabaikan didalam kelas. Oleh karena itu wajar jika banya siswa-siswa yang memiliki keterbatasan kosakata akan menemukan kesulitan dalam proses mempelajari bahasa kedua. Mereka akan menemukan kesulitan dalam berkomunikasi. Oleh karena itu, kosakata memegang peranan penting dalam proses berkomunikasi antara satu dengan yang lain baik secara lisan maupun tulisan. Dalam hal ini kosakata sangat diperlukan untuk menunjang suksesnya proses berkomunikasi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan bagaimana cara meningkatkan dan memperkaya kosakata dengan menggunakan kata-kata onomatopea atau beberapa bentuk ekspresi onomatopea yang terdapat didalam komik dan penelitian ini juga dimaksudkan untuk melihat serta meninjau beberapa tantangan yang akan dihadapi ketika menggunakan komik didalam proses pembelajaran bahasa kedua. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian yang bersifat analisis deskriptif kualitatif. Data dalam penelitian ini diambil dari beberapa kelas privat. Adapun bentuk pengumpulan data yang digunakan  adalah dengan menyelenggarakan beberapa tes dan observasi untuk melihat bagaimana kata dan ekspresi onomatopea yang terdapat di dalam komik dapat memberikan motivasi kepada para siswa dalam meningkatkan kemampuan penguasaan kosakata. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa terdapat peningkatan perolehan nilai rata-rata siswa dari 65.8 menjadi 75.9. Maka dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan kata-kata onomatopea didalam komik mampu meningkatkan dan memperkaya kosakata.Kata kunci : Onomatopea, Kosakata, Komik

Abstract

This study aimed at seeing whether the use of tourism brochures was effective to improve students’ achievement in writing descriptive text. In particular, it sought to find out whether tourism brochures was an effective means for generating ideas in writing descriptive text. The design selected for this study was a quasi-experimental study using nonequivalent pretest posttest design. The population of the study was all eighth grade students at SMP Karya Ibu Palembang. This study involved 262 students of the eighth graders. The sample was purposively chosen as the sample of the study in which 20 students belonged to the experimental group and 20 students belonged to the control group. The data were obtained by means of writing test as the instruments. The study lasted one and half months in that during the treatment, the student were exposed to a wide range of writing activities including process writing particularly a prewriting activity by using tourism brochures. The result shows that there was a significant difference among the writing test mean scores before and after they were exposed to tourism brochures and there was a significant difference in students’ test scores between the students who were taught by tourism brochures and those who were not. The research findings revealed that the use of tourism brochures was effective to improve students’ writing achievement. These findings were also supported by the significant improvement in writing achievement between the two groups in terms of the six aspects of writing (topic sentence, supporting detail sentence, concluding sentence, word choice, mechanics and grammar, sensory details). The results of the pre-test and post-test showed a positive response that tourism brochures was very helpful for the students in improving their descriptive writing achievement especially in generating, gathering, exploring and organizing their ideas prior to writing a descriptive text. The study was expected to yield a better quality of writing and build writing habit among students in a greater scale.Key Word: Writing achievement, Tourism brochures, Descriptive text

Abstract

AbstractDue to low motivation of Management students in sharing their ideas orally, a study on using a talking card to promote students’ motivation in speaking skill performance was conducted. A classroom observation method was used in this study. The sample was 40 students of Management Students in the sixth Semester of STIE MuliaDarmaPratama Palembang. The data were obtained by means of observation and questionnaire. Based on the result of the data analysis, it found out that there was a significant difference of students’ willingness in speaking up their opinion after implementing the talking cards. It was also found out that the samples had positive attitude toward the use of talking cards. Most of them were glad to have the cards during the lesson. The students became more enthusiastic as they competed each other to spend the cards soon. They also, subconsciously, developed their 4Cs (Critical thinking and Problem solving, Communication, Collaboration, Creativity and Innovation) as they should find any strategy in order to produce words to argue for their friend’s opinion or simply just to give comment to their friend’s story. Finally, the writer recommends the use of this card in order to promote students’ motivation in speaking as well as develop their 4Cs.Keywords : speaking skill performance, students’ motivation, talking cards AbstrakKarena motivasi rendah siswa Manajemen dalam berbagi ide mereka secara lisan, sebuah penelitian tentang penggunaan talking cards untuk mempromosikan motivasi siswa dalam keterampilan berbicara dilakukan. Metode observasi kelas digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Sampel penelitian adalah 40 mahasiswa Manajemen Mahasiswa semester enam STIE Mulia Darma Pratama Palembang. Data diperoleh dengan cara observasi dan kuesioner. Berdasarkan hasil analisis data, ditemukan bahwa ada perbedaan yang signifikan dari kemauan siswa dalam mengungkapkan pendapat mereka setelah menerapkan kartu berbicara. Itu juga menemukan bahwa sampel memiliki sikap positif terhadap penggunaan talking cards. Sebagian besar dari mereka senang memiliki kartu selama pelajaran. Para siswa menjadi lebih antusias karena mereka saling berkompetisi untuk segera menghabiskan kartu. Mereka juga, tanpa sadar, mengembangkan 4C mereka (Pemikiran Kritis dan Pemecahan masalah, Komunikasi, Kolaborasi, Kreativitas, dan Inovasi) karena mereka harus menemukan strategi apa pun untuk menghasilkan kata-kata untuk memperdebatkan pendapat teman mereka atau hanya sekadar memberi komentar pada kisah teman mereka . Akhirnya, penulis merekomendasikan penggunaan kartu ini untuk mempromosikan motivasi siswa dalam berbicara serta mengembangkan 4C mereka. Kata kunci : keterampilan berbicara, motivasi siswa, talking cards

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis puisi bebas siswa kelas VII SMPN 1 Air Kumbang melalui metode Outdoor Study. Jenis penelitian tindakan kelas (PTK). Tahapan pelaksanan mulai dari perencanaan, pelaksanaan tindakan, observasi, dan refleksi. Penelitian siklus I berlangsung pada tanggal 1 - 8 Agustus 2014 dan siklus II tanggal 27 – 30 Agustus 2014. Jumlah siswa sebagai subjek penelitian 31 orang. Data yang dikumpulkan terdiri atas data hasil pengamatan aktivitas siswa dan hasil tes akhir siklus. Indikator keberhasilan penelitian adalah jika 85% siswa telah mampu menulis puisi bebas mencapai KKM ≥ 70, kemudian 75% mampu mengikuti aktivitas belajar yang diukur melalui observasi. Hasil penelitian diketahui bahwa hasil belajar siswa pada siklus/tindakan I rata-rata  71,91 dan taraf ketuntasan belajar sebesar 64,52%. Pada siklus/tindakan II memiliki nilai rata-rata 82,87 dan taraf ketuntasan belajar sebesar 93,55%. Dari hasil analisis tersebut disimpulkan bahwa kemampuan menulis puisi bebas siswa kelas VII SMPN 1 Air Kumbang melalui metode Outdoor Study meningkat. Untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis puisi bebas dilakukan dengan mengungkapkan perasaan serta pikiran setiap siswa pada aspek penghayatan, pelafalan dan pengintonasian, dan penampilan. Persepsi siswa terhadap penggunaan metode Outdoor Study dalam pembelajaran menulis puisi bebas cukup baik.

Abstract

This study investigated the most dominant conflict management style applied by woman school principal in one private high school in Palembang. The mixed-method research was applied, 18 teachers and one woman principal in this school were selected as the participants of this study. A 28-itemquestionnairewas distributed in order to measure the teachers’ opinions towards their principal conflict management style with teacher-relationship and interviewschedule-face to face was constructed to the principal to get deeper information. Results reveal that this woman school principal demonstrates integrating style which is considerate enough to high concern both for self and for others teachers.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out whether or not there is a significant difference on the ninth grade students’ speaking achievement who were taught by using Gallery Walk strategy and those who were not at SMP PGRI1 Palembang. The population of this study consisted of 154 ninth grade students of SMP PGRI1 Palembang in Academic Year of 2016/2017. There were 34 students taken as sample. Each group consisted of 17 students as experimental group and 17 students from class as control group. The sample of this study was taken by using purposive sampling method. In this study, the researcher used pretest-posttest non-equivalent group design. The instrument used in collecting the data was oral test in the form of presentation. The test was administrated twice as the pretest and posttest for both experimental and control group. The results of the test were analyzed by using IBM SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Science) Statistics 21. The result showed that “there was means significant difference from students posttest score in experimental and control group, it was found the p-ouput (Sig.2-tailed) was lower than 0.05 level and t-obtained (12,505) is higher than t-table (1.756). So, the Ho (the null hypothesis)was rejected and Ha (the alternative hypothesis) was accepted. It means that there was significant difference on students’ listening comprehension achievement taught using Gallery Walk strategy than students who were taught by using teacher’s strategy.Keyword: gallery walk, speaking achievement

Abstract

ABSTRACTEveryone is only able to speak one language, the language they acquired naturally and grow with that, but it does not close the possibility to speak more than one language with learn. Language is essentially a means of communication among the members of a society. Language becomes very important because everything that humans do with each other is with this media. Foreign language of course is different from the mother tongue. Whether a grammar, the use of letters and how to read that is different. And when a child is told to learn thousands of foreign language vocabulary, of course it will make them stressful because how to spell and pronounce it is different from the mother tongue. But when someone does an adaptation in the social environment, then someone will use language that is adapted to the situation and conditions. Indonesia is a unitary country and also called as multicultural country, because Indonesia has a variety of languages and cultures. Indonesia still has one language called as Indonesia Language which is used as a national language to unite various regional languages. English, which is a foreign language in Indonesia, has a big role for Indonesia itself. Bahasa pada dasarnya adalah alat komunikasi di antara  masyarakat. Bahasa menjadi sangat penting karena semua yang manusia lakukan satu sama lain adalah dengan media ini. Bahasa asing tentu saja berbeda dengan bahasa ibu. Baik tata bahasa, penggunaan huruf dan cara membaca yang berbeda. Dan ketika seorang anak disuruh belajar ribuan kosakata bahasa asing, tentu saja itu akan membuat mereka stres karena cara mengeja dan mengucapkannya berbeda dari bahasa ibu. Tetapi ketika seseorang melakukan adaptasi di lingkungan sosial, maka seseorang akan menggunakan bahasa yang disesuaikan dengan situasi dan kondisi. Indonesia adalah negara kesatuan dan juga disebut sebagai negara multikultural, karena Indonesia memiliki beragam bahasa dan budaya. Indonesia masih memiliki satu bahasa yang disebut sebagai Bahasa Indonesia yang digunakan sebagai bahasa nasional untuk menyatukan berbagai bahasa daerah. Bahasa Inggris, yang merupakan bahasa asing di Indonesia, memiliki peran besar bagi Indonesia sendiri.
