Abstract

AbstractThis research aimed to identify the problems of speaking of sixth semester students of English Department UIGM based on their opinion, to reveal kinds of speaking activities that sixth semester students of English Department UIGM hope to be included in speaking courses, and to reveal how many mispronunciation errors that they made during the interview. The type of this research was descriptive research. The participants of the research were the four sixth semester students of English Department UIGM. The instrument used was interview. The result of the analysis showed that the participants have problems in speaking which are divided into two major problems; psychological and linguistic problems. The psychological problems include feeling nervous and being afraid to speak in English in front of the class. The second major problem is linguistic problems, which include problems in speaking aspects like pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary. The participants suggested four activities that they hope to be included in speaking courses; singing, English speaking day, speaking with native speaker, and being an international event volunteer. The last, the participants mispronunced 30 English words which consists of vowels (/a/, /ə/, /e/, and /æ/), consonants (/ʃ/, /k/, /Ө/, and /v/) and diphthongs (/aʊ/ and /ɪə/).Keywords : Students’ Perception, Speaking, Mispronunciation, EnglishAbstrakPenelitian ini bertujan untuk mengidentifikasi berbagai masalah dalam berbicara yang dihadapi oleh mahasiswi-mahasiswi semester enam Program Studi Bahasa Inggris UIGM berdasarkan opini mereka, untuk mengungkap macam-macam aktivitas berbicara yang mereka harap dapat disertakan dalam mata kuliah speaking, dan untuk mengungkap berapa banyak kesalahan pengucapan yang mereka buat selama wawancara. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif. Partisipan-partisipan dari penelitian ini adalah empat mahasiswi semester enam Program Studi Bahasa Inggris UIGM. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah wawancara. Hasil dari analisa menunjukkan bahwa para partisipan memiliki masalah dalam berbicara yang terbagi dalam 2 macam inti masalah; masalah-masalah psikologis dan masalah-masalah kebahasaan. Masalah-masalah psikologis meliputi perasaan gugup dan takut untuk berbicara menggunakan bahasa Inggris di depan kelas. Masalah kedua adalah masalah-masalah kebahasaan, yang meliputi masalah dalam unsur-unsur berbicara seperti pengucapan, tata bahasa, dan kosakata. Para partisipan menyarankan empat aktivitas yang mereka harap dapat disertakan dalam mata kuliah speaking; menyanyi, hari berbahasa Inggris, bercakap-cakap dengan penutur asli bahasa Inggris, dan menjadi panitia acara internasional. Terakhir, para partisipan keliru dalam mengucapkan 30 kata berbahasa Inggris yang mengandung huruf vokal (/a/, /ə/, /e/, and /æ/), konsonan (/ʃ/, /k/, /Ө/, and /v/) dan diftong (/aʊ/ and /ɪə/).Kata kunci : Persepsi Mahasiswa, Berbicara, Kesalahan Pengucapan, Bahasa Inggris

Abstract

The purpose of this study to find out whether or not writing drills to improve the second year students’ literacy skills as observed at SMP Negeri 1 Palembang. The population of this study consisted of eight classes with 156 male students and 154 female students. The population of this study are 320 students of the second year students of SMP Negeri 1 Palembang. The total number of sample was 80 students. A quasi experimental method was used in this study. The data collected by means of a pre-test given to both groups before the treatment and a post-test given after the treatment to both groups. To check whether the application of the instruction could run well as it was designed. the students were evaluated using t-test analysis of statistical product and service solution (SPSS) version 12 to run the analyses and interpreted quantitatively and qualitatively to satisfy the objectives of the study. The result showed that there was a significant acceleration in terms of the students’ reading and writing skills, and there was a positive respond towards this instruction. In conclusion, writing drills can improve the second year students’ literacy skills. Thus, the proposed instruction for reading and writing skills through writing drills either conceptually or practically is plausible to apply in any subjects, especially in reading and writing classes.Key Words :literacy skills, writing drills

Abstract

AbstractThis research was aimed to find out whether there was significant improvement on speaking achievement of the tenth grade students of SMKN 6 Palembang after being taught by using the Tourism Videos and to find out whether there was significant mean difference on speaking achievement between the students who were taught by using Tourism Videos and those who were not. This research applied experimental research design. The sample of this research were 31 students of SMKN 6 Palembang and divided into experimental and control groups. The results of this study were calculated by using SPSS. The research finding showed that the mean score of pretest of experimental group was 56,84 improved to 80,32. And the mean difference of posttest between experimental and control group was 2.129 and the mean difference of speaking improvement between the pretest and posttest within the experimental group was 23,484. The research findings revealed that the teaching of speaking improved the students’ speaking achievement due to having received the treatment using Tourism Videos. Hence, that there was significant improvement on speaking achievement in the experimental group and there was significant mean difference between the students who were taught by using Tourism Videos and those who were not.Keywords : Improving speaking skill, speaking skill, tourism video AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah ada peningkatan yang signifikan terhadap prestasi berbicara siswa kelas X SMKN 6 Palembang setelah diajar dengan menggunakan Video Pariwisata dan untuk mengetahui apakah ada perbedaan rata-rata yang signifikan pada prestasi berbicara antara siswa yang diajarkan dengan menggunakan Video Pariwisata dan mereka yang tidak. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain penelitian eksperimental. Sampel penelitian ini adalah 31 siswa SMKN 6 Palembang dan dibagi menjadi kelompok eksperimen dan kontrol. Hasil penelitian ini dihitung dengan menggunakan SPSS. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa skor rata-rata pretest dari kelompok eksperimen adalah 56,84 meningkat menjadi 80,32. Dan perbedaan rata-rata posttest antara eksperimental dan kelompok kontrol adalah 2,129 dan perbedaan rata-rata peningkatan berbicara antara pretest dan posttest dalam kelompok eksperimen adalah 23.484. Temuan penelitian mengungkapkan bahwa pengajaran berbicara meningkatkan prestasi berbicara siswa karena telah menerima perlakuan menggunakan Video Pariwisata. Oleh karena itu, bahwa ada peningkatan yang signifikan pada prestasi berbicara dalam kelompok eksperimen dan ada perbedaan rata-rata yang signifikan antara siswa yang diajar dengan menggunakan Video Pariwisata dan mereka yang tidak.Kata kunci: Meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara, keterampilan berbicara, video pariwisata

Abstract

This study describes the use of High 5 Strategies in English Foreign Language classroom. As one of teaching strategies, High 5 strategies can help the students to tackle their reading. High 5 strategies consists of activating background knowledge, questioning, analyzing text structure, creating mental images, and summarizing. First, activating background knowledge is the important concept of reading that can help the students to connect what they already learned or knew before so that it allows the students to get a better understanding of what it is about. Second, question is also the important way for students to form questions that help them understand what to look for as they read. Then, the students need to understand the structure of the text that help them easier comprehend each part of paragraph in the text by analyzing the text structure. Next, creating mental image or visualizing is used to imagine the structure of the text that the students have known before, so as they read, they should also imagine how the structure is. Finally, the students summarize all important information that they already got using the previous strategies. High 5 strategies provide an opportunity for all the EFL students to activate their background knowledge and form question in their mind, analyze, visualize and summarize the reading. In short, High 5 strategies can be used to help the students to learn better especially in improving their reading skill.

Abstract

English is so global in the world. Teaching English as foreign language is not easy. It needs motivation, spirit and willingness. Especially young learners, they have no area to speak and practice. That condition makes serious effect. In order to improve students’ speaking ability, teacher must ask them to memorize and learn Vocabulary. Unfortunately, it is a big problem to persuade students to read and memorize it. Vocabulary is the most important element in learning English. Teaching vocabulary is challenging to young learners. It will be boring without method, games and interesting technique. As an instructor, teacher or lecturer must find out a strategy to face this condition. We should create simple way but interesting to our students. In order to help young learners to learn vocabulary, we can use easy and simple game. So, Hot seat can be a solution to learn vocabulary. It is suitable to young learners and easy to use. Students can memorize the words and have fun in learning.

Abstract

The objectives of this research attempted to investigate whether or not using Think Pair Share (TPS) Technique gave significant improvement and significant difference on the tenth graders’ reading comprehension achievement of SMA LTI IGM. A quasi experimental design was used in this research. Two groups, experimental and control group, were assigned in this research in which each group consisted of 20 students, respectively. Intervention was given for 12 meetings including pretest and posttest administration. Reading comprehension test, in form of multiple choice question, was administered to measure the students’ reading comprehension. The research findings showed that (1) there was a significant improvement on the tenth graders’ reading comprehension achievement after being taught by using Think Pair Share Technique, and (2) there was a signifiant mean difference on the tenth graders’ reading comprehension achievement after being taught by using Think Pair Share Technique and those who were not. Therefore, the TPS technique significantly improved the tenth graders’ reading comprehension achievement of SMA LTI IGM.Key words : Think pair share technique, descriptive text, reading comprehension

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe objective of this research was to find out whether or not there was significant difference on reading comprehension achievement between the eleventh grade students of SMA Karya Ibu Palembang who were taught by using   REAP technique and those who were not. The population of this research was the eleventh graders of SMA Karya Ibu Palembang. 62 students were selected as the sample of this study by using purposive sampling technique. They were divided into two groups, experimental and control group. Each of them consisted of 31 students. To conduct this research, quasi experimental design was applied. The instrument for collecting data used was reading comprehension test that was distributed to the sample twice (pretest and posttest). There were 30 valid items of questions in the form of multiple choices. The result of the test was analyzed by percentage formula. The data obtained were also analyzed statistically by using SPSS. The result of the test showed that the significance two tailed was 0.027 which was lower than 0.05. With df 60, the result of independent sample t-test revealed that the t-table was 2.0003. As the t-obtained was higher than t-table (2.260), hence the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was confirmed. It can be said that there was a significant difference on reading comprehension achievement between the students who were taught by using REAP (Reading, Encoding, Annotating, Pondering) technique, and those who were not.Keywords : Reading Comprehension, REAP Technique, Narrative TextsABSTRAKTujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui adakah perbedaan yang signifikan terhadap prestasi pemahaman membaca antara siswa kelas XI SMA Karya Ibu Palembang yang diajar dengan menggunakan teknik REAP dan yang tidak. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas XI SMA Karya Ibu Palembang. 62 siswa dipilih sebagai sampel penelitian ini dengan menggunakan teknik purposive sampling. Mereka dibagi menjadi dua kelompok, kelompok eksperimen dan kelompok kontrol. Masing-masing terdiri dari 31 siswa. Untuk melakukan penelitian ini, desain quasi eksperimental diterapkan. Instrumen untuk mengumpulkan data yang digunakan adalah tes pemahaman membaca yang dibagikan kepada sampel sebanyak dua kali (pretest dan posttest). Ada 30 item pertanyaan yang valid dalam bentuk pilihan ganda. Hasil tes dianalisis dengan rumus persentase. Data yang diperoleh juga dianalisis secara statistik dengan menggunakan SPSS. Hasil tes menunjukkan bahwa signifikansi two tailed adalah 0,027 yang lebih rendah dari 0,05. Dengan df 60, hasil dari sampel independen t-test menunjukkan bahwa t-tabel adalah 2.0003. Karena t-hitung lebih tinggi dari t-tabel (2,260), maka hipotesis nol (Ho) ditolak dan hipotesis alternatif (Ha) dikonfirmasi. Dapat dikatakan bahwa ada perbedaan yang signifikan pada pencapaian pemahaman membaca antara siswa yang diajar dengan menggunakan teknik REAP (Reading, Encoding, Annotating, Pondering), dan mereka yang tidak.Kata kunci: Pemahaman Membaca, Teknik REAP, Narrative Texts

Abstract

The main problem of this study was the effective to teach time by using realia to the eighth grade students of SMP PTI Palembang. The objective of this study was to find out whether or not it is effective to teach time by using realia to the eight grade students of SMP PTI Palembang. This study used the quasi-experimental method. The written test was used to collect the data and it was analyzed by using mathched t- test. The population of this study was all the three grade of SMP PTI Palembang in the academic year of 2013/2014. The sample of the study was taken from the population cluster random sampling. Based on the result on the study, it was found that was effective to teach time by using realia to the eight grade of SMP PTI Palembang. The average score of the students in the post-test of the experimental group was 88,13. Meanwhile, the average score in the post-test control group was 85,37. In short, Ha was accepted than Ho. On the other hand, the use of realia is an effective way to teach time to the eight grade students of SMP PTI Palembang. Key words : using realia, quasi experimental method, population.

Abstract

AbstractThis research attempted to see whether the cooperative leaning was impactful on EFL learners’ critical thinking aspects. Non-equivalent pretest and posttest control group design of comparison group design was used in this research. The population of the research was all of the undergraduate students of University of Indo Global Mandiri. Forty students were selected as the sample purposively in the experimental group (treatment group) and control group (non-treatment group), respectively. A critical thinking rubric was employed to measure the EFL learners’ critical thinking(aspects) and critical thinking aspects(total). The research findings revealed that (1) there was a significant improvement on the EFL learners’ critical thinking(aspects) and critical thinking (total), (2) There was a significant mean difference on the EFL learners’ critical thinking(aspects) and critical thinking aspects(total), (3) there was a significant contribution of the critical thinking skill (aspects) and critical thinking aspects(total) in which the aspects of framing personal responses and acknowledging other perspectives had the lowest contribution and the aspects of recoqnizing stakeholders and context had the highest contribution. In conclusion statistically the cooperative learning was significantly impactful on the EFL learners’ critical thinking aspects in English language teaching.Keywords: Cooperative learning, critical thinking aspectsAbstrak Penelitian ini berusaha untuk melihat apakah pembelajaran kooperatif berdampak pada aspek berpikir kritis peserta didik EFL. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain penelitian non-equivalent pretest and posttest control group design of comparison group design. Populasi dari penelitian ini adalah semua mahasiswa sarjana dari Universitas Indo Global Mandiri. Empat puluh siswa dipilih sebagai sampel secara purposif dalam kelompok eksperimen (kelompok perlakuan) dan kelompok kontrol (kelompok non-perlakuan). Rubrik berpikir kritis digunakan untuk mengukur pemikiran kritis (aspek) pembelajar EFL dan aspek berpikir kritis (total). Temuan penelitian mengungkapkan bahwa (1) ada peningkatan yang signifikan pada pemikiran kritis (aspek) peserta didik EFL dan  pemikiran kritis (total), (2) Ada perbedaan rata-rata yang signifikan pada pemikiran kritis peserta didik EFL (aspek) dan aspek berpikir kritis (total), (3) ada kontribusi signifikan dari keterampilan berpikir kritis (aspek) dan aspek berpikir kritis (total) di mana aspek membingkai tanggapan pribadi dan mengakui perspektif lain memiliki kontribusi terendah dan aspek dari para pemangku kepentingan dan konteks yang memiliki kontribusi tertinggi. Kesimpulannya secara statistik pembelajaran kooperatif berdampak signifikan pada aspek berpikir kritis peserta didik EFL dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris.Kata kunci: pembelajaran kooperatif, aspek berpikir kritis

Abstract

The problem of this research is "how bilingual teaching in foreign language acquisition for young children?". The purpose of this study is the bilingual teaching in foreign language acquisition of children in teaching and learning in early childhood Happy Kids Palembang.The population in this study were all students of early childhood Happy Kids in Palembang. Samples taken 36 people from the class LG. This research method is descriptive qualitative method. Data obtained by observation and interviews.Based on the findings, the authors state that teachers use bilingual teaching for teaching and learning in the classroom. And it is used almost every activity they have done. In using bilingual teaching teachers use behavior directly and indirectly. They speak two languages (bilingual) at once in the form of sentences or utterances. From the data obtained in the above, it was found that teachers need only Indonesian and English as media language during the learning process. And the teachers never use their mother tongue or local language during their teaching and learning processes.From research conducted by the author revealed the importance of teaching bilingual in acquiring a foreign language in early childhood so that they have the basic foreign language skills as early as possible, broaden their knowledge of the language through conversations using simple sentences, mastery of vocabulary, sings a song in foreign language so that the child accustomed to a foreign language.Keywords : Bilingual teaching, language acquisition.
