Abstract

Epistemological obstacles arise due to the limited knowledge possessed by students in certain contexts so when facing different contexts, students will experience obstacles in finding a relationship and conceptual linkage. This study aims to describe students' epistemological obstacles in solving problems on the subject of quadratic equations. The approach used in this study is a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Data collection was obtained by giving a written test of three quadratic equation questions adopted from previous studies and conducting unstructured interviews. The subjects studied were all ninth-grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Majalaya, Karawang, and using probability random sampling techniques, a sample of 44 students was taken. The test data were then processed and grouped into three categories, namely high, medium, and low. Then the students' answers were analyzed and reviewed from the epistemological obstacle indicators. Then the researcher conducted unstructured interviews to find out more about the obstacles that occurred to the three selected participants. The results of the study showed that the epistemological obstacles experienced by students in solving problems on the subject of quadratic equations were: (a) conceptual obstacles, there were participant errors in determining definitions and not writing formulas in a given problem; (b) procedural obstacle, there are participants who have not been able to solve the problem according to the requested procedure; and (c) operational technique obstacle, there are participants who have errors in calculations in the process of working on certain steps and errors in writing formulas, the process of working, and the final results in solving the problem. It is hoped that the findings in this study can have a significant impact on the mathematics learning process, both theoretically and applicatively.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze students' mathematical communication skills in terms of gender differences in quadrilateral material. The type of research used is descriptive qualitative research. The subjects in this study were ninth grade students of Widya Nusantara Junior High School totaling 22 students. To measure students' mathematical communication skills, researchers used test instruments in the form of 3 quadrilateral material description questions which contained 3 indicators of mathematical communication skills and interviews which were then analyzed by the mean difference test. The results of this study show that, in the indicator of mathematical expression, male students tend to create mathematical models based on their understanding without relying on the formulas they have learned. In contrast, female students more often create mathematical models relying on the formulas they have learned. Regarding the drawing indicator, there is no significant difference between the mathematical drawing abilities of male and female students. However, in this indicator, female students excel more than male students. Keywords: Gender, Mathematical Communication Skills, Quadrilateral

Abstract

The Students abilities in solving math problems vary greatly. The underlying purpose of this research is to identify students' ability to solve problems that exist in the problem of line and angle material. The research uses a method that describes how far students' abilities are based on indicators of achieving basic competencies. This research was conducted at SMP Negeri 2 Majalaya with the subjects selected were 15 students from class VIII K. Data collection was carried out by giving written test sheets to students and documentation to describe the results of student work. The steps taken to analyze the data obtained are selecting data according to criteria, displaying data, and concluding results. Keywords: Student Abilities, Student Answer, Line and Angles.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to determine the mathematical communication abilities of junior high school students based on extrovert and introvert personality types. This research employs a qualitative descriptive research method. The researchers selected students from SMP Negeri 5 West Karawang who have received material on relations and functions as the population for this study. The data collected by the researchers consist of written test instruments, questionnaires, and interviews. The data analysis process in this research includes collection, reduction, presentation, and drawing conclusions. The findings reveal differences in mathematical communication abilities between students with extroverted and introverted personalities. Extrovert students, characterized by high self-confidence, tend to show carelessness and incompleteness in documenting the steps in solving problems. Meanwhile, introvert students, due to lower confidence in their understanding, tend to be more careful and complete in expressing ideas and outlining steps to solve a problem. Suggestions that the researchers can convey include the hope for further research to be more mature in preparing studies, in creating or choosing essay tests, it is recommended to use language that is easy for students to understand to avoid confusion. Additionally, further research is needed focusing on improving the communication skills of class VIII junior high school students.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the ability to understand mathematical concepts of grade VII students on algebraic form material. The research subjects were 26 students who were taken purposively at a State Junior High School in Kuningan Regency, West Java Province. The research methods used in this study are case studies with single cases and single analysis. The low ability to understand mathematical concepts of grade VII students as the focus of cases to be analyzed, with case analysis based on understanding mathematical concepts in algebraic form material. Test instruments were used in this study, as many as 8 description questions and 1 multiple-choice to measure students' numeracy skills. The results of the study concluded that the understanding of mathematical concepts is still very low, that is: almost all students can restate the concept of an algebraic form. However, some students do not understand how to classify objects according to their properties, present concepts in the form of mathematical representations, and apply concepts in problem solving.
