Abstract

Background: Dental caries is a major health problem affecting most of the world's population and is a multifactorial disease caused by the host, microorganisms, substrate and time. Nutrition is very important in maintaining health, growth, and has a relationship with nutritional status and dental caries. Obesity that occurs in children is a serious and emergency problem because it can last into adulthood. Objective: the aim of this study is to determine the relationship of Body Mass Index with caries incidence rates in children aged 5-12 years. Methods: This study is an observational analytic study with cross-sectional design in children aged 5-12 years at Dental Hospital in Faculty of Dentistry Trisakti University in 2019 with a total sample of 85 children. BMI is measured by weight squared divided by height squared to assess the nutritional status of children, while the def-t index and DMF-T index are used to assess the severity of caries. Results: The incidence rate of deciduous dental caries is very high (def-t index 9.75) and the incidence rate of permanent dental caries is low (DMF-T index 1.27). Data analysis using the Pearson correlation test showed there was no relationship between BMI and the incidence rate of dental caries because the p value was > 0.05. Conclusion: There was no relationship between BMI with caries incidence rates in children aged 5-12 years at Dental Hospital in Faculty of Dentistry Trisakti University.

Abstract

Background: The difference in facial profile after orthodontic treatment is important in orthodontic treatment as one of the goals of orthodontic treatment is to improve facial esthetic. Convex facial profiles that require first premolar extraction are the most common complaints of orthodontic patients in Asia. This profile is characterized by an increased lip profile procumbency. Therefore, any difference in the position of the lips from before and after orthodontic treatment is needed to be evaluated. Some studies proved that there was a significant difference in lip position after orthodontic treatment with the extraction of the first premolar teeth. Ricketts analysis is widely used to determine clinical differences in lip position. Objective: To determine the difference in lip position after orthodontic treatment with extraction of the first premolar using Ricketts analysis. Methods: This study was observational analytic with a cross-sectional study design. The study was conducted on 30 samples of lateral cephalogram radiographs before and after treatment at Orthodontist Clinic Bandung. The difference in lip position after orthodontic treatment and extraction of the first premolar teeth was determined using the Ricketts analysis. The measurement results were statistically analyzed with paired T-tests. Result: There was a difference in the position of the upper and lower lips after orthodontic treatment with first premolar extraction with p <0.001. The distance of the upper and lower lips to the E-line after orthodontic treatment with first premolar extraction was different than before treatment. Conclusion: There is a significant difference of upper and lower lip position before and after orthodontic treatment with first premolar extraction.

Abstract

Background: Treatment that’s being done to inhibit malocclusion when it started to develop is called interceptive orthodontic. Interceptive orthodontic treatment is performed during the mixed dentition period. Early detection for interceptive orthodontic treatment needs in the mixed dentition period can be measured by Interceptive Orthodontic Care Needs Index (ICON-I). One of the factors that can affect the need for interceptive orthodontic treatment is parent’s education level. Purpose: To find out the relationship between interceptive orthodontic treatment needs in children aged 8-11 years with parent’s education level at SDN Kenari 08 Central Jakarta. Method: Intraoral examination in children with a mouth mirror performed by a dentist using ICON-I. This type of research is analytic observational research with cross sectional research design. Result: Subjects of this research were 172 students at SDN Kenari 08 Central Jakarta. The results of the examination using ICON-I showed 82 children (47,7%) required interceptive orthodontic treatment, 17 children (9,9%) did not require orthodontic treatment, and 30 children (17,4%) needed corrective orthodontic treatment. Most of the parent’s education level was at the low level with a total of 129 people (75,0%). Based on Spearman’s correlation test, the results showed significant relationship (p = 0,008). Conclusion: The results showed that there was a significant relationship between interceptive orthodontic treatment needs with parent’s education level.

Abstract

ABSTRACTImportance of maintaining good oral hygiene is one of the basic underlying need to achieve oral health. The purpose of brushing teeth is to clean a child's teeth and mouth to prevent oral disease such as cavities. Highest prevention of cavities occurs when children regularly brush their teeth with the help and supervision of parents. To do so, parents especially mothers require sufficient information to guide their children to maintain their oral hygiene properly.  One of which, is about choosing a toothbrush that is appropriate with the age of child. Toothbrush consists of 3 main parts namely the head, handle and bristles. These three components must be considered in choosing a toothbrush that is appropriate for a child. We also need to pay attention to size that is appropriate for the child. Various variables affect selection of a toothbrush. Dentists should assess individual needs of each patient before making recommendations to parents, especially mothers in choosing a toothbrush for their child.
