Abstract

This study analyzes the dominant discourse on the authenticity of the Qur’an in the perspective of Toshihiko Izutsu by employing a semantic approach and Michel Foucault’s power–knowledge framework. This research is a library-based qualitative study that uses Izutsu’s primary works as the main data sources, supplemented by contemporary literature on Orientalism and Qur’anic studies. The findings reveal that Izutsu constructs a dominant discourse affirming the authenticity of the Qur’an through a consistent analysis of internal semantic relations, thereby producing a counter-discourse that challenges the hegemony of classical Orientalist skepticism. This discourse is shaped by Izutsu’s linguistic mastery, cross-cultural intellectual experiences, and broad epistemic horizon, enabling him to interpret the Qur’an objectively and without theological bias. The study also demonstrates that Izutsu’s semantic method functions not merely as a linguistic tool, but as a mechanism of discourse production that establishes an alternative regime of truth within Qur’anic studies. Theoretically, this research strengthens the integration of discourse analysis and semantics in the study of religious texts, while practically it offers a methodological foundation for objective cross-religious research and for developing more critical and interdisciplinary approaches in contemporary Qur’anic studies.

Abstract

The Hajj pilgrimage is the fifth pillar of Islam, requiring istitha'ah (capability) asa mandatory prerequisite for pilgrims. This research aims to analyze the meaningof istitha'ah in the Qur'an and its implications for Hajj readiness amongprospective pilgrims in Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi. Employing a qualitativedescriptive-interpretive approach, the research integrates library research withcognitive semantic analysis of classical and contemporary Qur'anicinterpretations (Ibnu Katsir and Al-Qurthubi), semi-structured interviews with 15prospective pilgrims from Kendari, and analysis of hajj policy documents.Cognitive semantic analysis using Fillmore's frame semantics and Sperber-Wilson's relevance theory reveals that istitha'ah is a multidimensional conceptencompassing physical, mental, financial, and spiritual capabilities, distinct fromsynonyms like qudrah. Research findings show that Kendari pilgrims haveinternalized holistic understanding of istitha'ah yet face complex challenges:health issues affecting 73% of pilgrims with comorbidities, financial barriers withhajj costs of IDR 46.2 million against local income of IDR 3.5 million monthly, and temporal constraints with waiting lists reaching 14-38 years. Holisticunderstanding of istitha'ah increases pilgrimage satisfaction by 52%, whereasnarrow interpretation causes social exclusion. The novelty of this research lies inthe first integration of cognitive semantic analysis of the Qur'an with localempirical data, demonstrating that istitha'ah is a dynamic concept requiringresponsive policies aligned with pilgrims' socioeconomic realities to ensure moreinclusive hajj accessibility.
DIALOG RESEPSI JAMĀ’AH TABLĪGH TERHADAP QS. ALĪ-IMRĀN [3]: 104 DENGAN DAN QS. AL-AHZĀB [33]: 33 TENTANG PERAN PEREMPUAN DALAM DAKWAH Aisyah; Muh. Ikhsan

Abstract

This study examines the reception dialogue of Jamā'ah Tablīgh regarding QS. Āli-'Imrān :104 concerning the obligation to preach and QS. al-Ahzāb :33 regarding women's roles at home. Using a qualitative approach with the Living Qur'an method, this research was conducted from February to May 2024 at Al-Markaz Jamā'ah Tablīgh, Bombana District, Southeast Sulawesi. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 8 informants (5 women, 3 men), participatory observation, and document study, then analyzed using the Miles & Huberman model. The findings reveal that Jamā'ah Tablīgh does not experience contradiction in understanding the two verses. QS. Āli-'Imrān :104 is understood as a universal preaching obligation for all Muslims including women, in line with contemporary tafsir. QS. al-Ahzāb :33 is interpreted not as an absolute prohibition but as guidance to prioritize household as the primary center of activity while still allowing women to go out for religious necessity. Jamā'ah Tablīgh integrates the two verses through developing special preaching programs for women (ta'lim, halaqah, bayan, ijtima') that enable women to develop spiritually and intellectually without compromising family commitment. These findings demonstrate that Muslim communities are capable of performing intelligent hermeneutical contextualization in receiving the Qur'an, integrating traditional values with modern contextual needs. This research contributes to Living Qur'an studies by demonstrating how the Qur'an "lives" through complex hermeneutical processes and the development of social programs based on community theological understanding.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the concept of nusyuz committed by husbands as presented in QS. An-Nisā’ [4]:128 through an analysis of Wahbah Az-Zuhaili’s interpretation in Tafsir al-Munīr and a comparison with the interpretations of al-Qurṭubī, Ibn Kathīr, and Quraish Shihab. This research employs a qualitative library-based method with analytical approaches integrating linguistic, historical, legal, and maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah perspectives. The findings reveal that Az-Zuhaili defines nusyuz by husbands as a form of negligence, emotional withdrawal, indifference, and harmful behavior that violates the principle of al-mu‘āsyarah bil-ma‘rūf (harmonious marital conduct). His interpretation corrects the classical tendency to associate nusyuz primarily with wives. Compared to other exegetes, Az-Zuhaili offers a more comprehensive and contextually relevant synthesis by combining textual interpretation with socio-psychological analysis. The novelty of this study lies in emphasizing nusyuz as a reciprocal issue that may occur on either side of the marital relationship, and in highlighting reconciliation (ṣulḥ), justice, and dialogical approaches as key mechanisms for conflict resolution. The study implies the need for tafsir perspectives that are responsive to contemporary family dynamics and support women’s rights in cases of marital neglect. Future research is encouraged to explore female exegetical perspectives and to conduct empirical studies on the implementation of husband nusyuz in mediation practices and religious court proceedings.
