Abstract

This study explores commissive speech acts within the debates of Ahl al-Bayt, a distinguished group in Islamic tradition representing the Prophet Muhammad's family. It examines the linguistic and ethical significance of commissive verbs—speech acts that bind the speaker to future actions, such as promises, threats, and guarantees. The study aims to analyze their unique features and applications in these debates, highlighting their moral and rhetorical roles in Islamic discourse. Using qualitative analysis grounded in the frameworks of Austin and Searle, the research identifies commissive verbs as the intersection between the classifications of these theorists. The analysis focuses on their defining traits, such as sincerity, future orientation, and voluntary commitment. Examples from Ahl al-Bayt debates are scrutinized to illustrate the practical and ethical dimensions of these acts, emphasizing their role in establishing trust and accountability. Key findings reveal that commissive speech acts in Ahl al-Bayt debates are categorized into four domains: concern, determination, oath, and promise. These acts differ from directive speech acts by centering on the speaker’s commitment rather than seeking to influence the listener. The study demonstrates how these acts reflect not only linguistic obligations but also the Ahl al-Bayt’s ethical principles and leadership in guiding their audience. This research bridges linguistic theory and Islamic heritage, offering insights into the interplay between language, intent, and moral accountability. It contributes to understanding how speech acts serve as vehicles for ethical communication, enriching both linguistic and socio-religious studies. These findings hold implications for contemporary discourse, emphasizing the importance of sincerity and commitment in ethical leadership.

Abstract

Climate-induced displacement and migration have become urgent challenges in Bangladesh, a country that is extremely sensitive to the effects of climate change. The patterns and determinants of climate-induced displacement and migration in Bangladesh are investigated in this study, which takes a case study approach. Bangladesh, with a population of over 165 million, is one of the world's most densely populated countries, and its low-lying terrain makes it especially vulnerable to climate-related disasters, including floods, cyclones, and sea-level rise. According to recent data, between 2008 and 2019, approximately 4.4 million people were displaced annually as a result of natural catastrophes, with climate change accounting for a sizable part. The study uses both quantitative and qualitative approaches, including surveys, interviews, and secondary data analysis, to investigate how environmental variables influence migration patterns in vulnerable places such as coastal areas and riverine islands (chars). The findings show that climate-induced migration is the consequence of both acute environmental hazards and long-term socioeconomic vulnerabilities worsened by climate change. The study emphasizes the importance of government policy, local governance, and community resilience in affecting migration outcomes. This study contributes to a better understanding of the complex interplay between climate change, displacement, and migration in Bangladesh, allowing policymakers to devise more effective solutions to address the difficulties faced by climate-induced migration. The study emphasizes the importance of targeted interventions to improve adaptive ability and resilience in impacted communities, assuring long-term development in the face of continuous climatic problems.

Abstract

The research examined youths' participation and representation in politics and the decision-making process of Ondo State from 2003-2018. The available and existing literature shows that youth represent about half of Nigeria's population, just as in Ondo State. The research investigates the inverse relations of the youth population compared to leadership positions occupied in Ondo State, especially at the legislature and Executive levels in the years under study. The study adopts the theory of political participation as its theoretical framework for midwife work. In addition, the research methodology comprises both primary and secondary data, as the primary data is derived from interviews and survey research emphasizing the administration and analysis of a well-structured questionnaire. Statistics such as percentage representation, frequency table, and pictorial representation were also used. The research also examined the roles of environmental factors, youths' exorbitant behaviors, societal structures, and material facts that affect youths' political participation and representation in Ondo State and the nation at large. From a public policy perspective, the research study's findings provided veritable tools/insights for researchers, public policy analysts, Electoral agencies/reformers, political parties, politicians, and Nigeria in the quest for Youth involvement in politics and leadership positions. Equally, the outcome of the research study enhanced future research work and discourse on democracy, youth participation, and representation in Ondo State, in particular, and Nigeria in general.

Abstract

Sustainable urbanization is a crucial topic in the fight against environmental issues, fast urbanization, rising energy, transportation needs, and reduced quality of life. Rapid urbanization, population growth, a lack of administrative response to issues, and rising energy and transportation costs have made ensuring sustainable urban development a major concern in emerging countries. This research aims to identify challenges Pakistan is currently facing regarding sustainable urbanization and effective urban planning. This study adopted a systematic literature review to find the most relevant 27 articles using a systematic process and analyzed them using thematic analysis. Based on findings, it has been found that the pace of urbanization without conserving sustainability has raised serious concerns about urban planning. Several issues and challenges, such as inadequate infrastructure, political resistance, uncoordinated urban growth, lack of sustainable infrastructure, and difficulty in adapting urban policies to sustainability requirements, are major concerns impacting efforts related to sustainable urban planning in Pakistan. Addressing these concerns is essential to maximizing productivity and guaranteeing the long-term viability of sustainable urban expansion. As a result, national policymakers must emphasize sustainable urban planning to achieve long-term economic growth.

Abstract

This study has attempted to validate the Hindi translation of Francois-Lecompte & Roberts’ (2006) socially responsible consumption (SRC) scale. This study used two translation methods: back translation and iterative procedures. A total of 10 highly professional bilingual translators were recruited to do the translation work. Five expert bilingual reviewers were appointed to review the translation work at each stage of the translation process. A five-member multidisciplinary committee was set up to adjudicate and cross-validate the final version of the translated scale. A pre-test was conducted with 21 native Hindi speakers to assess the clarity of the translated scale. A seven-member expert panel evaluated the meaning and content equivalence of the translated scale. Finally, a full psychometric test was performed with 195 responses from the target population. Factor analysis validated the Hindi translation of Francois-Lecompte & Roberts’ (2006) socially responsible consumption (SRC) scale.

Abstract

This study explores the relationship between social support and resilience in individuals living with HIV/AIDS. Resilience, defined as the ability to adapt and recover from adversity, is critical for psychological well-being, especially in the face of stigma and discrimination commonly experienced by people with HIV/AIDS. The research aims to determine whether social support significantly contributes to enhancing resilience among this population. The study employed a quantitative approach, involving 64 individuals diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Data were collected using the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support and the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale. Statistical analyses, including Pearson’s Product-Moment Correlation and Spearman’s Rho, were conducted to test the hypothesis that higher social support is positively correlated with increased resilience. The findings reveal a significant positive correlation between social support and resilience, with a correlation coefficient of 0.511 and a p-value of 0.000. Resilience levels among participants were generally low, with 81.2% categorized as "very low." Social support levels were similarly low, with 51.56% of participants in the "very low" category. Family, friends, and significant others were identified as key sources of social support, contributing 18.9%, 23.8%, and 27.2% to resilience, respectively. The study also found that social support was particularly impactful on aspects of resilience such as persistence and hardiness. The results underscore the importance of social support in fostering resilience among people living with HIV/AIDS. Enhanced social support networks contribute significantly to their psychological adaptation and ability to cope with adversity. Conversely, a lack of support exacerbates vulnerability and diminishes resilience.

Abstract

Adolescence is a critical developmental phase characterized by increased vulnerability to emotional and psychological challenges, often leading to decreased subjective well-being. Parenting approaches play a pivotal role in influencing adolescents’ well-being. Strength-based parenting, which focuses on identifying and nurturing children’s strengths, has been identified as a potential driver for enhancing subjective well-being. This study aims to investigate the relationship between strength-based parenting and subjective well-being among high school students in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Using a quantitative approach, the research involved 181 students aged 15-18 years. Data were collected through validated scales measuring strength-based parenting and subjective well-being, including the Strength Use Scale and the Positive Affect Negative Affect Scale (PANAS). Statistical analysis employed Spearman’s Rho correlation to explore the relationship between the variables. The results revealed a significant positive correlation between strength-based parenting and subjective well-being, with a correlation coefficient of r = 0.544 and p = 0.000. Approximately 29.59% of the variance in subjective well-being was attributed to strength-based parenting. Key aspects such as strength knowledge and strength use were identified as significant contributors. Students experiencing higher levels of strength-based parenting reported increased life satisfaction, positive affect, and reduced negative emotions. These findings highlight the critical role of parenting practices in shaping adolescents’ emotional and cognitive evaluations of life. Strength-based parenting not only enhances adolescents’ resilience and coping mechanisms but also contributes to overall life satisfaction. The study underscores the importance of implementing parenting strategies that emphasize the development of children’s strengths to foster holistic well-being. Future research is recommended to explore the longitudinal impacts of strength-based parenting and its interaction with other influencing factors in diverse cultural contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to discuss the legal culture of inheritance distribution in a Sasak community in Jerowaru Village, Lombok by reveal the interaction of customary law and Islamic law used in distributing inheritance. This study is a qualitative descriptive which considers normative legal research and empirical legal research, as well as Islamic law anthropology and legal pluralism perspective. Qualitative data was collected by conducting in depth interviews with religious leaders, traditional leaders and community members. Number three: Sasak community has a pattern of heritage distribution (inheritance distribution) in the form of "Sak Mame Belembah Sak Nine Bereson" sons get more than daughters. It illustrates the give and take of customary law with its emphasis on social equilibrium and family responsibility, together with Islamic legal practices tailored to local realities. The analysis by Griffiths and Hooker in legal pluralism theory, as well as from Clifford Geertz and John Bowen in Islamic legal anthropology, shows that the law in the Sasak community has appeared not static law but dynamic law, which is responsive against social change. Inheritance law integrates customary law, and Islamic law eventually produces an inheritance legal system that is broad and flexibly ensures substantive and distributive justice; one way is to amalgamate cultural values and religious needs embraced by the society. To its academic contribution, this research is an answer revealing how complex the legal dynamics are in a plural societies context, and there is a new way of looking to create Islamic Law in line with Consuetudo Law to build a legal system that is fair and responsive by referring to local wisdom.

Abstract

Islam and Islamophobia are actual and factual themes in the life of the Indonesian nation. Freedom of expression as a product of the 1998 reform, which was expected to provide opportunities for every citizen, has, in some cases, been misused to spread hatred and lies, which can trigger conflict and social disintegration. Film is a mass communication medium that reflects social reality and society's subconscious, and it can be studied multimodally. Films that raise the issue of Islam in national life and even those that raise the issue of Islamophobia as a global phenomenon after the 11 September 2001 attacks in America are increasingly being produced and enjoyed by audiences around the world. This research attempts to portray the issue of Islam and Islamophobia in Indonesian cinema from historical and social aspects as well as record the narrative of Islam and Islamophobia in Indonesia in the post-reformation era. This research uses a descriptive qualitative content analysis approach with data collection through the literature study method. This research found that commodification and commercialization are not the only reasons for producing Islamic-themed films. This research found that self-identification as a modern, ideal Muslim and adhering to Islamic values is an audience need that is fulfilled by film media as a popular culture product.

Abstract

For many people it seems to be a simple and resolute strategy to reject the justification of the Humanities as part of a university curriculum so that money, time, and energy could be saved for more important matters leading directly to a career beyond college. Emotions such as erotic love are, so they say or imply, irrelevant for our postmodern society and don’t need to be studied in whatever discipline. Instead, we must work toward figuring out how to engage with economic issues, how to develop new technologies, how to ensure high employment rates, and how to make the money flow in a stable process. All this, however, ignores what really matters in our existence here on earth, primarily love, a force that tantalizes, confuses, paralyzes, and stuns us whenever it occurs, and it elates and inspires us, giving us happiness and sorrow, pain and excitement, all depending on the circumstances. As this paper will argue, perhaps carrying the proverbial owls to Athens, without love, there is no real life. The entire discourse of love since late antiquity, throughout the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and subsequently until today, has always forced us to acknowledge the essence of human existence, fundamentally predicated on the notion of love, unrequited or fulfilled, in marriage or in an extramarital relationship. The literary discourse demonstrates that throughout time, the interest in the topic of love has been a universal concern, and keeping that in mind, we suddenly hold the most powerful tool in our hand to defend the Humanities within the academic framework. The key consists of the realization that there is hardly anything more important to study at any level of people’s lives than love because it provides meaning, happiness, relevance, and community. Of course, it is important also to keep in mind a number of other values and ideals, such as justice, humility, fairness, tolerance, and then also, at least for some people, love of God, and fear of death. There are many media to reflect on love, but poetry has commonly been the most crucial narrative platform to explore this highly complex and challenging phenomenon and to provide expression and imagery for the ineffable experience that is certainly with us, whether people acknowledge it or not. After some reflections on what constitutes the core responsibility of research and teaching in the Humanities, this paper examines a small selection of diverse love poems from two time periods to illustrate their deep and universal impact on human existence and, hence, their relevance for all of us.
