Abstract

Communication in the school environment plays a significant role in fostering a respectful and effective learning atmosphere. However, the increasing neglect of politeness due to technological and cultural shifts has become a concern. This study aims to explore the use of negative politeness strategies by eleventh-grade students during English learning activities at SMA Swasta Gajah Mada Medan. Negative politeness, as proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987), is directed at minimizing the imposition on the listener's negative face. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this research analyzes utterances containing negative politeness strategies from classroom interactions. The findings indicate seven types of negative politeness strategies, with "be conventionally indirect" being the most dominant. These strategies help maintain harmonious communication and reduce potential conflicts in classroom settings.

Abstract

Mastery of English vocabulary is essential for students to develop their language skills, particularly in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. However, many students at SMPN Satap Heututan have shown limited vocabulary knowledge, which affects their overall English proficiency. This research aimed to improve students' vocabulary mastery through the use of circle games during the academic year 2024/2025. The study employed a pre-experimental design consisting of three stages: pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The data were quantitative, collected from 20 seventh-grade students as research participants. Two types of test instruments—multiple-choice and noun identification—were used in both the pre-test and post-test. The results demonstrated that the application of circle games significantly improved students’ vocabulary skills. The mean score increased from 48.75 in the pre-test to 80.25 in the post-test, resulting in a gain of 31.5 points. This improvement is considered significant, indicating a notable enhancement in vocabulary mastery after the treatment. Additionally, the use of circle games created a more engaging and interactive classroom environment. Students were more active, motivated, and responsive, showing greater interest and attention during the learning process. In conclusion, the implementation of circle games is an effective and enjoyable strategy for enhancing vocabulary acquisition among seventh-grade students at SMPN Satap Heututan.

Abstract

Yam farming is an essential agricultural practice in Nigeria, particularly in rural communities like Omambala, where it serves as a major source of livelihood and food security. However, farmers face significant challenges during the postharvest phase, with pests such as Heteroligus Meles (yam beetle) causing considerable damage to stored yams. The study adopted a descriptive survey design and was conducted in Anambra East Local Government Area, a major yam-producing region in Anambra State. The target population included medium- to large-scale yam farmers and agricultural professionals. A purposive sample of 94 respondents was selected. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire, validated by experts, and tested for reliability (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.8). Descriptive and inferential statistics, including Univariate Analysis of Variance, were used for data analysis at the 0.05 significance level. The findings revealed that integrated postharvest management significantly reduced infestation and postharvest losses caused by Heteroligus meles. Farmers who applied improved techniques recorded better storage outcomes. Moreover, the study found that regular extension education enhanced farmers’ awareness and practical skills in pest control, leading to more effective implementation of protective measures. Farmer awareness was positively correlated with the use of recommended storage practices and pest management solutions. The study concludes that combining integrated postharvest strategies with targeted extension education and awareness programs can greatly improve yam storage efficiency and reduce pest-related losses. It recommends the strengthening of extension services and the promotion of farmer-friendly pest control technologies to ensure sustainable yam production and food security in the region.
