Abstract

This study aimed at examining the quality of an English summative test of grade VII in a public school located in Kupang. Particularly, this study examined content validity, reliability, and conducted item analysis including item validity, item difficulty, item discrimination, and distracter effectiveness. This study was descriptive evaluative research with documentation to collect data. The data was analyzed quantitatively except for content validity, which was done qualitatively. Content validity was analyzed by matching the test items with materials stated in the curriculum. The findings revealed that the English summative test had a high content validity. The reliability was estimated by applying the Kuder-Richardson’s formula (K-R20). The result showed that the test was reliable and very good for a classroom test. The item analysis was conducted by using ITEMAN 3.0. and it revealed that the the test was mostly constructed by easy items, most of the items could discriminate the students, most distracters were able to perform well, and the most of items were valid.

Abstract

This community service activity was done as an effort to improve Students’ English speaking skill. As one of language skill aspects, speaking skill must be actively developed. The reality shows that the graduates both in school level and high education level have not shown the maximum speaking skill. Some of the contributing factors include psychological factors where students do not speak English because they are afraid to make mistake. Further, they are lack of confidence. Another cause is the minimum space for students to develop themselves besides less of class hours. This community service has two main purposes. First, to help students improving their speaking skill through English speech training activity. Second, to help students to be more confident in speaking English. This community service was conducted through socialization method, tests, lecture method, workshop, and guidance. This activity was done face to face by implementing the health protocols. The activity was run smoothly. The team expects that this activity can improve students’ motivation to speak English.Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dilakukan sebagai wujud nyata upaya peningkatan kemampuan siswa-siswi dalam berbicara (speaking) bahasa Inggris. Sebagai salah satu aspek keterampilan berbahasa, keterampilan berbicara harus dengan giat dikembangkan. Kenyataan di lapangan menunjukan bahwa para lulusan baik pada tingkat sekolah maupun pada tingkat perguruan tinggi belum menunjukan kemampuan berbicara yang maksimal. Beberapa faktor penyebab diantaranya adalah  faktor psikologis dimana siswa-siswi tidak berbicara bahasa Inggris karena malu, takut salah dan kurang percaya diri. Minimnya kosa kata dan pengetahuan tata bahasa juga diketahui berkontribusi pada kemampuan berbicara siswa-siswi yang rendah. Penyebab lainnya adalah kurangnya ruang bagi siswa-siswi untuk mengembangkan diri disamping jam pelajaran yang sangat minim. Tim pelaksa pengabdian pada masyarakat ini memandang perlu adanya suatu tindakan untuk membantu siswa-siswi menigkatkan kemampuan berbicara mereka di luar jam sekolah. Program pengabdian ini memiliki dua tujuan utama. Pertama, meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara bahasa Inggris siswa/i melalui pelatihan pidato bahasa Inggris. Kedua, membantu siswa/i agar lebih percaya diri dalam berbicara bahasa Inggris. Metode pelaksanaan pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah metode sosialisasi, tes, ceramah, pelatihan (workshop), dan bimbingan. Pelaksanaan kegiatan PKM ini dilaksanakan secara tatap muka dengan tetap memperhatikan protokol kesehatan. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini berjalan dengan baik dan lancar. Tim pelaksanaan PKM berharap kegiatan ini dapat meningkatkan motivasi siswa-siswi untuk meningkatkan kemampuan  berbicara (speaking)

Abstract

Vocabulary is one of the language components which has an important role in language learning. Without having enough vocabulary someone is impossible to speak or communicate in English. The Purpose of Learning Vocabulary To learn something people have to know the purpose of the things Reviews their learn, in this case the purpose of learning vocabulary is to help the learners Easier in expressing the idea, the research aimed to find out the effect of using picture as teaching media in improving vocabulary at timor leste border.The method in this study is Experimental designwith control and experimental group. The populations in this research used random sampling technique with the number of sample are 42 students; 21 students in control group and 21 students in experimental group. This study was conducted at SMP Satap Negeri Sono Perbatasan Timor Leste, from the eighth grade students in academic year 2017/2018. The instruments that the researcher used arevocabulary test and questionnaire and the research data were collected through a pre-test and post-test and data were analyzed by meand through SPSS 16. The research resultshows revealed that the applying of picture as media in teaching vocabulary could significantly improve their vocabulary and using picture had controibution on students in mastering vvocabulary. Besides, the responses of the experimental group the students of SMP Satap Negeri Sono perbatasan Timor leste have good perception towards the using of picture technique.Therefore it can be concluded that the use of picture media for teaching english especially vocabulary to the students is really effective Keywords: Picture,Teaching vocabulary and Vocabulary Mastery.

Abstract

Introduction and training of “Fast Math Tricks” for elementary school students in GMIT Petra Kefamenanu congregation aims to develop students' thinking skills and interest in mathematics. This community service activity is carried out for one month, with a meeting duration of 90 minutes per meeting. Students who take part in the activity are students who are considered capable of participating in the training, come from the sixth grade of elementary schools in the GMIT Petra Kefamenanu congregation. The method of implementing this activity is the method of testing, lecturing, and practice. The activity began with an introduction to "Fast Math Tricks", followed by training on "Fast Math Tricks". With the introduction and training of "Fast Math Tricks", students understand and like mathematics more and will become provisions for students for education at the next level. Student response is very good in implementing activities because "Fast Math Tricks" is a new thing for them, in addition to the introduction of "Fast Math Tricks", it can provide benefits and convenience for elementary school students in doing calculations. From the introduction and training activities of fast math tricks, it was concluded that students were 87.50% helped, 8.33% was quite helpful, and 4.17% were not helped by the application of fast math tricks in calculating multiplication and division.

Abstract

This study was aimed at examining the quality of teacher-made English summative test of grade VII and VIII of one of Junior High Schools in Kefamenanu. It applied the descriptive qualitative method by focusing on document analysis. The result showed that both tests given to the first and second-grade students of Junior High School of Biboki Utara are applied on 2 levels of Bloom Taxonomy Revised Theory, they are Remembering (C1) and Understanding (C2). The result of the test indicated that the tests are included in the lowest level of the cognitive domain based on Bloom Taxonomy Revised theory. Besides, certain test instructions in both test A and B needed to be paid more attention since they contain some grammatical errors.

Abstract

Introducing English Grammar and Vocabulary by applying Direct Method for the students of GMIT Petra Kefamenanu aimed to attract the students’ interesting of English learning and improve their ability on learning English. This community service activity had been held for one month, once a week in 90 minutes for every meeting. There were primary students who joined this community service activity which consisted of the students from elementary school at GMIT Petra Kefamenanu. The students were introduced and taught English by applying Direct method with various fun activities to make the students feel enjoy and joyful. The students learnt English Grammar and Vocabulary enthusiastically and the students practiced English step by step. This community service activity affected the students’ ability on learning English. By introducing English Grammar and Vocabulary, the students got knowledge about grammar and vocabulary. From this activity, it could be concluded that the students’ knowledge and ability about grammar and vocabulary has increased after introducing of English grammar and vocabulary by applying Direct Method.

Abstract

This article aimed to describe the language politeness carried out by lecturers at border area of Indonesia at Timor University, especially at English Education Department. This article deals with the forms of observance of the maxims of modesty and the reasons of speech which contains of observance and non-observance maxims of language politeness. Language politeness enables lecturers to communicate better.  This article is a qualitative research by using descriptive method. There were three lecturers involved as the participants in this study. The study was conducted at English Education Department of Timor University. The data collected through observation, and note taking method techniques. Data were analyzed in the following steps: (1) transcribing the recorded data into written form, (2) classifying the form of language politeness according to Leech, (3) analyzing the form of language politeness, (4) analyzing the factors of compliance and violations of language politeness, and (5) conclude the analysis results. The result shows that lecturers used both observance and non- observance maxim. Non-observance maxims were applied to give warning and motivation for the students. The lecturers’ compliance with the maxim of politeness helped the students to be more enthusiastic on learning. Based on the result, it could be concluded that it was necessary to used language politeness to make the communication could run well and effectively.

Abstract

Community service was done as a concrete implementation of NTT Provincial Governor Regulation No. 56 2018. Following the adoption of the regulation, the team considered that it was necessary to promote the importance of English for the NTT community, especially for young children. As a Lingua Franca, English plays an important role; yet English language teaching is currently limited to lessons in class only without the assistance of its usage outside the classroom. The team believes it was a need to carry out a community service movement such as teaching that was more focused on the use of English language skills as early as possible. Introducing English to children from an early age was expected to improve the quality of the younger generation, especially in the language field. The method of implementing this community service was a teaching method by using children's songs and flashcards. The teaching was done face-to-face. The community service activities were run well and smoothly.

Abstract

Translation is commonly done by the students in the classroom. This study aims to figure out the students’ strategies, the students’ problems, and the students’ level of mastery in translating Indonesian descriptive text into English. The object of the study was the second grade students of sciences major SMA Swasta Pelita Karya Kefamenanu. The class consisted of 25 students. In this study, the researcher applied qualitative and quantitative methods to analyze and identify strategies, problems, and students’ levels of mastery in translating the descriptive text. The research results revealed that first, the strategies used by the students to translate the descriptive text were adaptation, borrowing, and literal translation. Second, problems faced by the students in translating the descriptive text were that the text was considered long but the time to do the translation was not enough. Most of the students didn’t have dictionaries and were lack of vocabularies, so they could not translate the text correctly. Third, the students’ ability for translating the descriptive text was good.
