Abstract

Economic development is closely related to environmental degradation. Indonesia's Environmental Performance Index score is only 28.2, which ranks at the bottom compared to ASEAN-6 countries. Indonesia's Environmental Quality Index (EQI) tends to fluctuate. In fact, the Water Quality Index (WQI) and Land Cover Quality Index (LQI) are less than 70, which means they are in the moderate category and tend to stagnate. Therefore, this study aims to determine the general description of environmental quality as approximated by the EQI and the factors that are thought to influence it and analyze what factors affect EQI in Indonesian provinces in 2017-2021. Panel data regression analysis was applied in this study. The result of this study is that GRDP per capita and GRDP of processing industry have a significant negative effect, while GRDP per capita quadratic, urban population, ICT, and financial development have a significant positive effect on the EQI in Indonesia.

Abstract

The Indonesian government has made efforts for its population to receive at least secondary education through the 12-year compulsory education program. However, not all residents in Indonesia can complete 12 years of education. This indicates the occurrence of school dropouts and affects the resilience of the population to complete education. Central Java Province is one of the provinces whose average length of schooling requires attention because it has the lowest RLS in the Western Region of Indonesia with RLS in 2022 reaching 8.38 years. This study aims to find out the general description of dropping out of school and the resilience to complete education in residents aged 7-18 years in Central Java Province in 2022 and the factors that influence it. The method used is survival analysis with data sourced from the March 2022 Susenas. The results of the research with AFT loglogistics show that gender, head of household education, head of household business field, poverty status, and area of residence have a significant effect on the resilience of the population aged 7-18 years to complete education.

Abstract

Access to sanitation is a fundamental component of health. Poor sanitation can reduce human welfare and hinder a country's socio-economic development. Therefore, access to adequate and equitable sanitation for all is a target to be achieved by 2030. This study aims to analyze the influence of socioeconomic factors on access to proper sanitation in Indonesia in 2021. The method used includes descriptive analysis in the form of graphs and data center sizes as well as inferential analysis with multiple linear regression. The results showed that the level of completion of high school and owning a latrine significantly increased access to proper sanitation. Conversely, the share of food expenditure significantly reduces access to proper sanitation. The government must prioritize sustainable education by expanding scholarship programs and also boosting financial support for the construction of sanitation facilities. To raise public awareness, there has to be more socialization and teaching about the value of good sanitation.

Abstract

The lack of a workforce-to-employment-opportunity balance on the Indonesian labor market in 2022 is worrisome. In an effort to make the workforce more competitive, labor productivity indicators are available on the labor market itself. This study aims to analyze the level of labor productivity in Indonesia in terms of quality in the economic development pillars in achieving the eighth Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This study uses K-Means Clustering and multiple linear regression analysis. Based on the K-Means Clustering method, three provincial clusters were obtained with levels of labor productivity from lowest to highest. The results showed that the open unemployment rate and the percentage of the labor force with basic education significantly reduced labor productivity, while the wage rate significantly increased labor productivity. Improving the labor market by looking at labor productivity and the variables that influence it in Indonesia can be carried out in an efficient manner according to the areas that have been mapped by implementing employment innovations.

Abstract

Indonesia's Crude Palm Oil (CPO) commodity has advantages and has the potential to increase the country's economic growth. Indonesia is the largest CPO exporter in the world. However, in recent years CPO exports have continued to fluctuate. The potential and capability must be followed by quality improvement, so that later it can have an active role in international trade. Therefore, this study aims to identify an overview and analyze the factors that affect the competitiveness of Indonesia's CPO commodity exports in the world market. This study uses time series data from 1995 to 2021. The competitiveness analysis approached by Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) applies the first-order autoregressive error model method. The results show that during the 1995-2021 period, the competitiveness of CPO exports and CPO production tends to experience a positive trend, FDI tends to experience a negative trend, and real exchange rates tend to fluctuate. Furthermore, real exchange rates and CPO production affect the level of competitiveness of Indonesia's CPO exports.

Abstract

Stunting is a problem that arises from a lack of nutrition and can interfere with the growth and development of children. The high prevalence of stunting can be an indicator of the low quality of a country's human resources. The impacts include limited cognitive abilities, low productivity, and a high risk of disease, which have a long-term negative impact on the preservation of the country. Therefore, stunting is one of the targets of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The purpose of this study was to analyze the factors that influence the prevalence of stunting in Indonesia in 2021. This study used a cross-sectional approach with secondary data from the Central Bureau of Statistics and the Indonesian Ministry of Health. The research methods used are descriptive analysis and inferential analysis with multiple linear regression. The results showed that the proportion of low-birth-weight babies significantly increased the prevalence of stunting. On the other hand, the proportion of households that had access to sanitation allowed it to significantly reduce the prevalence of stunting in Indonesia.

Abstract

Indonesia faces a challenge to narrow the paddy yield gap between Jawa dan outside Jawa to boost national yield. It requires an understanding of the main causes of the gap. Our study aims to estimate the paddy yield gap between paddy farmers in two regions and then decompose it to identify the main contributors in explaining the gap. We estimated that the average yield of farmers outside Java is about 32 percent lower than their counterparts in Java Island. The decomposition results pointed out that the difference in characteristics only has a small contribution to the total gap. The gap happens along the data distribution, in which the gap tends to be wider in the lower part of the distribution. Our findings indicate that the gap is mainly caused by the differences in environmental factors and their interaction with farmers' characteristics. So, it needs complex socio-ecological approaches to address.

Abstract

In an effort to maintain the achievements of the Central Java Provincial Government as a national rice barn in order to create food security, a strategy is needed to increase rice production amid a decline in rice production in Central Java. Production input factors, such as irrigation, pesticides, and seeds, are important factors that can affect rice production. This study aims to determine the effect of the use of irrigation, pesticides, and certified seeds on rice production, as well as the effect of rice production on the food security of farming households in Central Java. Based on the 2021 Integrated Agricultural Survey (SITASI) data, the estimation results using multiple linear regression show that the use of irrigation, pesticides, and certified seeds has an effect on increasing rice production in Central Java. Meanwhile, the estimation results using binomial logistic regression show that increased rice production can increase the food security of rice farming households in Central Java. Therefore, the use of irrigation, pesticides and certified seeds needs to be optimized in various districts/cities in Central Java. The hope is that with increased rice production it will be able to achieve food security for farming households in Central Java.

Abstract

Our study aims to confirm the gender yield gap in the context of paddy cultivation in Indonesia by estimating the gap between female and male farmers and decomposing it to identify the explained contributing factors. Using the results of the SUTAS, we found that female farmers’ yield is lower by about 2.3 percent on average than their male counterparts. Decomposition results of Blinder-Oaxaca and Counterfactual Distribution pointed out that most of the gap can be explained by the difference in characteristics between the two groups, particularly in educational attainment and mechanization adoption, in which female farmers lag behind. We found that the gap tends to be wider at the bottom of yield distribution. Our findings suggest, improving female farmers' education and their technology adoption are key to covering the gap. However, a substantial proportion of the unexplained gap could be an indication that there is negative discrimination against female farmers.

Abstract

Food security is a crucial topic for Indonesia as it is intricately linked to social, economic, and political aspects. The majority of Indonesia's population relies on the agricultural sector to meet their daily needs, both in terms of economic livelihood and food nutrition. Therefore, the Indonesian government must ensure that the food needs of its population are sustainably met by emphasizing the development of food security. The process of food security development requires accurate and up-to-date data. Utilizing Big Data has become an alternative to fulfill the need for large, accurate, and efficiently manageable data. One component of Big Data is Google Trends. In this research, Google Trends was analyzed using LSTM and K-Means Clustering methods. The results showed that the LSTM model was able to predict the trends related to food security in Indonesia quite effectively. Furthermore, the topics related to food security from Google Trends could be clustered using K-Means Clustering, resulting in the formation of three clusters. Of particular concern is Cluster 1, as it indicated relatively low information regarding the topic of food security in Indonesia.
