Abstract

This research aimed to determine whether the use of the Plotagon Application is effective in enhancing students’ English Presentation skills. The researcher used a pre-experimental as a research design. This research focuses on a single group pre-test and post-test which asks students to present in front of the class on the topic of daily activities. This research was conducted at SMP Telkom Makassar in the eighth grade with a total population of 230 students. The sample was class VIII B with a total of 30 students selected using a random sampling technique. The findings from this study showed that the mean score of pre-tests was 68.11 and post-test was 84.55, this means that the score was increased after the sample received treatment and based on the paired sample on sig. value (2-tailed) was 0.00 < 0.05. It can be concluded that the use of the Plotagon application is effective in enhancing students' English presentation skills.

Abstract

Toraja Utara, a province in Indonesia, aims to create a young generation who can use English as a primary language. Learning is a crucial need for students to enhance their learning. This study aims to understand the factors influencing students' English language learning at SMP Negeri 3 Buntao' Satap, using qualitative research methods such as observation and interviews with students, English teachers, and school principals. The study reveals that the learning environment at SMP Negeri 3 Buntao Satap is poor due to internal factors such as physical challenges, students' understanding, attitude, and boredom, external factors like family environment, teaching methods, facilities, and learning resources, and non-social factors like the school's distance from the effort to help students learn English in formal education.

Abstract

This research aimed to determine the effect of the ELSA Speak application on students' English pronunciation development. The research design was pre-experimental. This research was taken place at UPT SMP Negeri 1 Sungguminasa. The participants of this research were the students of the 8A Multimedia, and the total population was 35 students. The researchers used a quantitative case study with a purposive sampling technique to select the participants. Based on the pre-test and post-test results, the researchers found that the ELSA Speak application was effective in developing students' English pronunciation. Based on the study's results, it is known that the post-test mean score (83.49) is greater than the pre-test means score (77.20). Based on the pre-test to post-test, the score of N-gain (normalized gain) is used to measure the improvement of science process skills and cognitive learning outcomes between before and after treatment is 5.5. This indicates that the ELSA Speak Application is quite effective in improving students' English pronunciation to be better.

Abstract

This study aims to explore students’ perceptions of the rewriting task in the syntax course. The researcher applied the descriptive-qualitative method to achieve the objective of the research. The data were collected by conducting interviews. The subjects of the research were 10 students who had enrolled in the Syntax course at the State University of Makassar. The subjects were chosen using a simple random technique. Based on the result of the study, the students’ perceptions suggest that the rewriting task in the Syntax course is helpful, assisting students to understand the material, but ineffective. Based on the findings, the conclusion is that the student’s perceptions are mostly positive regarding the rewriting task in the syntax course. Although this task is well-designed by the lecture and is mostly perceived positively by students, there are also students who perceive it negatively.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the perceptions of English education study program students towards online learning at State University of Makassar. In this research, the researcher used a mixed-method research design. The population of this research is 7th semester students of English education at State University of Makassar. The number of populations is 68 students. The researcher used random sampling techniques in determining the sample. The researcher used questioner and interview, consists of 15 questioner and 5 interview questions. The result of this research shows that students have a positive perception of online learning, it was proven by the result of the students’ rating mean which was 57.54. The perceptions of learners of online learning, which makes it simpler to receive learning materials because it can be accessible anywhere and anytime, show that it is properly effective, can help students to receive learning and students are increasing in seeking information from various sources.

Abstract

This study aims to find out whether or not the incorporation of song lyrics is effective in improving students’ vocabulary of verbs in the Eleventh Grade at SMA Negeri 5 Bulukumba. This study employed a nonequivalent group design and a quasi-experimental methodology. Two classes were utilized as the sample by the researchers; the experimental group and the control group. The results of the experiments indicated that students could acquire more words by being taught vocabulary through song lyrics. It can be done by comparing the students' test results before and after instruction. According to data analysis, there was a significant difference in students' vocabulary knowledge in the experimental class, which used English song lyrics, and the control class did not use song lyrics. This is proven by seeing the mean score of posttests for the control class was 68.91 categorized as fair. For the experimental class, the mean score on the pretests was 60.47, which was considered low, while the mean score on the posttests was 80.31, which was considered high. It may be said that there is a considerable difference between the experimental class and the control class in how much song lyrics are used to increase the students' vocabulary mastery in SMA Negeri 5 Bulukumba.

Abstract

This research aims to find out English teachers’ perceptions of school readiness in using the Merdeka Curriculum. The subject of this research was two English teachers of SMAN 3 Makassar. This research used a descriptive qualitative method. An interview was used as the main instrument to collect the data. The results of this research showed that the two English teachers of SMAN 3 Makassar perceived that SMAN 3 Makassar is ready to use the Merdeka Curriculum due to: (1) SMAN 3 Makassar teachers already have a good understanding of the Merdeka curriculum., (2) the human resources strengthening of SMAN 3 Makassar teachers, and (3) the facilities/infrastructure at SMAN 3 Makassar to be used to fulfill their duty to strengthening students’ competence and developing character under the values of Pancasila. Moreover, the two English teachers tend to view the Merdeka Curriculum as what is needed for students in Indonesia due to its policies to make the students fulfill the Profil Pelajar Pancasila Project (P5), which are: (1) devoted to the Almighty God and possess noble character, (2) independent, (3) cooperative, (4) internationally diverse, (5) critical thinking, and (6) creative. Besides, the students can also choose the subjects that correspond with their interests.

Abstract

This research aimed to determine whether or not the use of crossword puzzle can increase the students’ spelling ability. This research used a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design. The population of this research was the grade VIII students of SMPN 1 TAMALATEA by using cluster random sampling with a population of 6 classes and the selected sample was grade 8.1 which amounted to 26 students. The data were collected through spelling tests carried out during the pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed using t-test statistics with a significance value of 0.05. The results of the data analysis show a probability value (sig. 2-tailed) of 0.000 is smaller than the significance value of 0.05. Therefore, this research rejects the null hypothesis (H0) and accepts the alternative hypothesis (H1). Based on these results, the researcher concludes that the use of crossword puzzle can increase students’ spelling ability at SMPN 1 TAMALATEA.

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether the use of short stories in learning to read improves students' reading comprehension or not, as well as to find out how students perceive the use of short stories in an effort to improve students' reading comprehension. This study uses quantitative methods to determine whether or not students' reading comprehension increases after using short stories in the teaching and learning process, and to determine students' perceptions of the use of short stories. The researcher took the research subjects of class XI MIA 3 SMAN 9 Makassar students in the 2020/2021 school year, totaling 30 students with a hybrid learning system of 15 students. Instruments in data collection are tests, observations and questionnaires. The results of the data analysis show that the use of short stories can improve students' reading comprehension. This is evident from the results of the analysis of students' pre-test and post-test scores, where the average pre-test score of students is 60 and the average post-test score of students increases to 83. Thus, it can be concluded that by using short stories the value of the average student increased 38.3%. In addition, based on the results of the questionnaire distributed to students, shows that students have a positive perception of the use of short stories in the teaching and learning process of reading in the classroom. This can be seen from the average score of the overall perception of students is 50.9, where this score has passed the limit of the average score for perceptions considered negative, which is equal to or less than 49.

Abstract

This study aimed to know the types of students' misbehavior and teachers’ strategies to overcome students' misbehavior in learning EFL. Teachers' strategies as the independent variable and students' misbehaviors as the dependent variable. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. There were 3 English teachers at SMA Insan Cendikia Syech Yusuf as the subjects of this research. The data of the research was obtained by observation and interview. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that the subjects faced various students’ misbehaviors. These misbehaviors were categorized into four categories (verbal interruption, off-task behavior, physical movement, and disrespect to the teacher). In overcoming those misbehaviors, the subjects had some strategies to overcome students' misbehaviors. These strategies were non-verbal intervention, verbal intervention, and logical consequence.
