Abstract

This research aims to explore the strategies used by the teachers as well as the challenges they face in implementing the teaching and learning activities during online classes. This research is qualitative research with a case study approach through interviews. The participants in this study were 2 English teachers from SMK Nasional Makassar. The data in this study were obtained through 3 parts of interviews with a total of ten questions. The findings show that the strategies used by English teachers in implementing learning during online classes are diagnostic assessment and discovery learning using several applications, including WhatsApp, Zoom, Google Classroom, YouTube, Google Forms, and the Google search engine. The teachers also used several other strategies involving peer tutoring, using school facilities, implementing synchronous online learning, and parental counselling to overcome challenges. Meanwhile, their challenges are lack of access to technology, parental support, social influence, and student interest. Therefore, it is recommended for teachers to continue to use or apply a combination of strategies that they have implemented. In addition, because there are several other strategies discussed in this study, readers, especially teachers, can also use other strategies and technologies to increase the variety of their learning activities. Finally, during the observation of the application of discovery learning, the teacher used it to recount text materials with a combination of writing and speaking projects. It can be used differently in different material focuses and skills. So, it is also suggested that future researchers be more specific with certain aspects of teaching English, such as language skills or certain materials to enrich data related to that field.

Abstract

This research aims to explore teachers’ perceptions, teachers’ strategies and the impact of emotional management on students’ speaking learning processes in EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classrooms. This research is qualitative research with a thematic analysis. The subject of this research is English Teacher who actively teaches in Athirah Islamic Senior High School. Data were collected through questionnaires distributed to teachers and semi-structured interviews with five English teachers at Athirah Islamic High School. The findings indicate that teachers have a positive perception of the importance of emotional management in facilitating effective speaking instruction and creating a conducive learning environment. Key strategies teachers implement encompass constructive learning approaches, establishing psychological safety, and building positive teacher-student relationships. Specific examples include using engaging activities, self-reflection, role modeling calmness, giving encouragement, and developing interpersonal bonds. In terms of impacts, managed teacher emotions translated into increased students’ enthusiasm, class participation, achieved competencies, and reduced speaking anxiety. Students mirrored teachers’ stability and emotional balance, loosening inhibitions around verbal participation. By contrast, poor emotional regulation transferred pressures onto students, disrupting engagement. Hence, teachers’ emotions significantly influence the classroom climate and student speaking outcomes. This study concludes that concerted emotional management and student-centered strategies enable teachers to unlock participation, foster resilience, and facilitate the repetitions essential for English speaking mastery. Findings will equip educators to create affectively supportive environments conducive to oral language development.

Abstract

The aims of this study are to determine the appropriateness of the English speaking-skills material with the criteria for good material established by Cunningsworth (1995) and Mukundan (2011). This research uses a qualitative approach with a qualitative descriptive research design. The subjects of this research were 11th-grade English materials at MAN 1 Maluku Tengah, an English teacher and seven 11th-grade students at MAN 1 Maluku Tengah. Data was collected using assessment checklists and interviews. The evaluation checklist was carried out offline at school and filled in by an 11th-grade English teacher and the researcher. Interviews with students are used to obtain information about students' needs regarding the English speaking-skill learning materials. Meanwhile, interviews with the teacher were conducted to obtain additional information regarding the English learning materials that she used. The research results show that the suitability of the English speaking-skills material with the overall criteria for good material is 86.15%. The highest percentage of criteria was “aims and approach”. The criteria have 95.8% because all the materials were in accordance with the learning objectives, syllabus and curriculum. Meanwhile, the lowest percentage of the criteria was “design and organization”. This is because the material is still lacking in design so the criteria just have 62.4%. From the research findings, the researcher concluded that the English speaking-skills material meets the standard criteria for good material by Cunningsworth (1995).

Students are also motivated to join English clubs because they can learn more about English, learning more fun, and they want to go abroad and communicate with foreigners easily. Then, for the negative perceptions of some students, the obstacles or difficulties experienced are lack of time exposure and pronunciation that is still convoluted. The challenges faced by English club activities are lack of funds. Although English club members experience obstacles and difficulties, they still have the desire or intention to continue learning English, where they feel there are more advantages than disadvantages.
