Abstract

Sorting is an important stage in postharvest handling of chili peppers to obtain products with uniform quality. Manual sorting processes generally require more time and have the potential to produce errors due to observer subjectivity. This study aimed to model chili pepper (Capsicum sp.) sorting using a digital image analysis approach with ImageJ software and to compare its measurement effectiveness with conventional manual methods. The study employed an experimental method with a quantitative approach through several stages, including manual measurement, image acquisition, image processing using ImageJ, and data analysis. The observed parameters included fruit size, object area, color intensity, and visual characteristics of chili peppers. The results showed that measurements obtained using ImageJ exhibited a similar trend to manual measurements in identifying the relative size of chili fruits. The object area values generated through image analysis indicated variations in size among samples, while color characteristics reflected differences in fruit maturity levels. The use of ImageJ provided a more objective, faster, and more consistent measurement process compared to manual methods. Digital image analysis has potential for further development as an automated sorting system in chili postharvest handling.

Abstract

Stakeholder mapping is not merely an auxiliary communication activity in irrigation planning; it is a governance instrument that determines whether technical water-balance calculations can be converted into legitimate cropping schedules, coordinated operations, and collective compliance at the field level. This study analyzes the configuration of stakeholders in the implementation of a water-balance-based Global Cropping Plan (RTTG) in Musi Rawas Regency, Indonesia. A descriptive qualitative case-study approach was employed. Data were collected through field observation, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions involving local government agencies, planning and technical departments, irrigation officers, agricultural extension workers, farmer water-user associations, farmer groups, rice farmers, fish farmers, and community water users. The data were processed through thematic coding, role identification, triangulation, and a power-interest matrix. The findings indicate that RTTG implementation depends on the alignment of four actor clusters: policy steering actors, technical-operational actors, regulatory and resource-support actors, and water users. Promoters with high power and high interest must be engaged intensively as policy legitimators and coordination drivers; latents must be approached through legal, budgetary, and institutional arguments; defenders require participatory empowerment as field implementers and social monitors; and apathetics need concise public information to prevent misinformation. The study concludes that stakeholder mapping strengthens adaptive irrigation governance by integrating technical data, institutional authority, farmer participation, and food-security objectives.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of different planting media on the growth and production of pakcoy plants (Brassica rapa L.) in the hydroponic system. The research design used a Group Random Design (RAK) with five treatments and five replicates. The treatment provided was in the form of wood charcoal planting media, rockwool, sponges, cocopeat, and burnt husks. The parameters observed included plant height, leaf width, number of leaves, total fresh weight, and the production of pakcoy plants. The results of the study show that the planting medium has a real influence on all growth and production parameters. The highest plant height reaches 20.99 cm, leaves width 8.96 cm, number of leaves 11.06 leaves, total fresh weight of 165.00 g, and production yield of 991.71 g. Rockwool and cocopeat planting media have proven to be the most effective in increasing the growth and production of pakcoy plants compared to other media. The advantage of rockwool lies in the ability to retain optimal moisture and aeration, while cocopeat has a good capacity to retain water and nutrients. Thus, the selection of the right planting medium is an important factor in the success of pakcoy cultivation in the hydroponic system, and can be used as a reference for farmers in increasing the productivity of horticultural crops in a sustainable manner.

Abstract

Pre-emergence herbicide application in plant cane sugarcane must be completed within a narrow operational window, making work capacity, labor requirement, and unit cost central to method selection. This study compared the operational performance and cost of a drone sprayer and a conventional knapsack sprayer at PT Sinergi Gula Nusantara MKSO Kebun Sei Semayang. A quantitative descriptive-comparative design was applied to 38 operational days during the 2025/2026 planting season, comprising 20 drone days and 18 conventional days. Actual work capacity and labor requirement were tested using the Mann–Whitney U test, while costs were evaluated descriptively through one-way sensitivity and break-even analyses. The drone achieved 10.93 ha/day, approximately 4.03 times the conventional capacity of 2.71 ha/day. Labor requirement was 0.2506 man-days/ha for the drone and 1.3160 man-days/ha for the conventional method. Both differences were significant (p < 0.001) with large effect sizes. Nevertheless, drone application cost IDR 804,043/ha, 5.95% above the conventional cost of IDR 758,908/ha. Cost parity occurred at a drone service tariff of IDR 216,838/ha or a conventional field cost of IDR 252,942/ha. The drone is therefore preferable for time- and labor-constrained operations, whereas the conventional method remains economical under the current cost structure.

Abstract

Curly chili (Capsicum annuum L.) is one of the strategic horticultural commodities in Indonesia which has high economic value and plays an important role in meeting the food needs of the community. Biochar is a soil amendment with a high pore structure, which can increase water retention capacity, improve soil aeration, increase cation exchange capacity, and reduce nutrient loss due to leaching. he research was conducted at the experimental garden of the Faculty of Plant and Animal Sciences and the integrated laboratory at Campus B, Jalan Jenderal Besar Suharto KM 13, Lubuk Kupang, Lubuklinggau Selatan I, from February to May 2026. Using a Factorial Randomized Block Design (RAK) consisting of two factors. Factor 1: Type of Soil Media (P); P0 = topsoil, P1 = peat soil, P2 = ex-coal mining soil, P3 = marginal soil. Factor 2 Ameliorant Dose (K) K0 = no ameliorant (control), K1 = biochar 200 g/polybag, K2 = biochar 300 g/polybag, and K3 = biochar 400 g/polybag. Each treatment consisted of 3 sample plants repeated 3 times, the number of sample plants in each block was 16 treatments x 3 sample plants x 3 replications. Based on the research results, the type of planting medium and biochar dosage had the best effect on plant height, number of branches, flowering age, number of fruits, and fruit weight.
