Abstract

The enactment of Law Number 1 of 2023 on the Indonesian Criminal Code represents a significant transition from a colonial formal legality model toward a criminal law system that recognizes living law. This article examines the urgency of customary criminal law in national criminal law reform by focusing on the position of customary law as a source of substantive justice, the problem of formalizing customary offenses through regional regulations under Government Regulation Number 55 of 2025, and the constitutional safeguards required to prevent local criminalization that violates legal certainty and human rights. This study employs a qualitative normative legal method using statutory, conceptual, and limited socio-legal approaches. The findings show that customary criminal law is urgent as an instrument of legal decolonization, social equilibrium restoration, restorative justice, and the reconstruction of a Pancasila-based criminal law system. Nevertheless, its recognition must be limited by the existence of indigenous legal communities, compatibility with Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution, human rights protection, and procedural guarantees through regional regulations, review mechanisms, and judicial control. The novelty of this article is the proposed protective-responsive integration model that positions customary criminal law not merely as an exception to legality but as a corrective source for substantive justice in national criminal law reform.

Abstract

This research investigates how social, cultural, and moral values embedded in Indonesian literary texts can be integrated to strengthen literacy in senior high schools. Framed by contemporary conceptions of literacy as critical, reflective, and socio-culturally situated, the study analyzes a curated corpus of Indonesian novels and short stories commonly discussed in secondary-level literary studies (e.g., Bukan Pasar Malam, Perempuan Bersampur Merah, Canai, Sabtu Bersama Bapak). Using a qualitative descriptive approach with a content-analysis design, we conducted intensive readings, coding, and cross-text comparison against value indicators (compassion, responsibility, harmony; respect, hospitality, religiosity; honesty, integrity, perseverance). The analysis yielded 141 value-bearing excerpts: 49 moral, 37 social, and 55 cultural. Results show that (1) moral values are articulated both explicitly (maxims, parental counsel) and implicitly (sacrifice, empathy in action); (2) social values cohere around cooperation, solidarity, and civic contribution; and (3) cultural values foreground family rituals, respect for elders, religious practice, language preservation, and communal cooperation. Pedagogically, these patterns support deep reading and value-rich literacy through reflective writing, dialogic discussion, role-play of ethical dilemmas, and project-based tasks that link texts to learners’ lived contexts. The study contributes a consolidated, text-based rationale for recommending specific Indonesian literary works as classroom resources aligned with the Kurikulum Merdeka and 21st-century literacy goals. Limitations include the bounded corpus and qualitative scope; future work should pilot classroom implementations and mixed-methods evaluations of student outcomes

Abstract

This article analyzes changes in the Chinese government's policy toward the Uighur ethnic group in Xinjiang before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The study uses a qualitative approach with literature analysis of official regulations, international human rights reports, academic articles, and state policy products. The findings show that there has been a strengthening of political control, digital surveillance, religious Sinicization, socio-cultural restructuring, and increasingly repressive security policy changes after the pandemic. Within the framework of public policy theory, China's policies appear to be an authoritarian state's response to maintaining political stability and national integration through a top-down approach. This article identifies that the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the transformation of policy from merely addressing extremism to consolidating power and controlling identity

Abstract

This study will explore the duration of game use most frequently by students, as well as the theories that support the effectiveness of games in improving critical thinking skills. This study aims to determine the Transformation of Student Behavior in Digital Learning: A Study of the Effect of Game Use Duration on Critical Thinking Skills of Students at SMK Negeri 1 Medan. This study uses a descriptive quantitative method with a Structural Equation Model (SEM) approach. This method is used to analyze the relationship between latent variables, namely the type and duration of game use and indicators of students' critical thinking. The population in this study were students of SMK Negeri 1 Medan who actively use games in their daily lives. The type of Educational Game (JGE) has the strongest influence on the development of students' higher-order thinking skills, especially in the Reasoning and Systems Thinking aspects. The duration of play (both educational and entertainment) does not have a significant effect on the critical thinking skills of SMK students. The Type of Entertainment Game (JGH) only makes a small contribution to students' cognitive development and tends to be recreational. The transformation of students' thinking behavior occurs when playing games shifts orientation from entertainment to a reflective and strategic learning process. The novelty of this research SEM model shows that educational games can be an effective digital learning medium in developing critical, systemic, and problem-solving thinking skills — core competencies of vocational school students to face the technology-based world of work

Abstract

Children’s mental health has become a critical issue in education due to the rise of various psychosocial problems influenced by shifts toward a digital lifestyle and a decline in community-based social activities. On the other hand, the use of local wisdom as a tool for mental health interventions remains relatively limited. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the Meen Galah Education intervention within a transformative pedagogy framework as an effort to strengthen the mental health of elementary school children. The study employs a quantitative approach with a one-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design. The study participants consisted of 23 fifth- and sixth-grade students from SD Negeri Kajhu, Aceh Besar, selected using purposive sampling. The intervention was conducted over six sessions by integrating the traditional Meen Galah game, critical reflection activities, and collaborative learning. Mental health data were measured using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), which covers aspects of emotional problems, behavioral problems, hyperactivity, peer problems, prosocial behavior, and total difficulty scores. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics, the Paired Sample t-test, the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test, and Cohen’s d effect size. The results of the study indicate that the intervention significantly reduced emotional problems (Z = -4.260; p < 0.001), behavioral problems (t = 8.47; p < 0.001; d = 0.935), hyperactivity (t = 9.73; p < 0.001; d = 1.199), peer relationship problems (t = 5.21; p < 0.001; d = 1.441), and total difficulty scores (t = 12.77; p < 0.001; d = 2.856). Additionally, prosocial behavior increased significantly (Z = -3.787; p < 0.001). These findings suggest that Meen Galah Education, based on transformative pedagogy, has the potential to serve as a contextual, locally-rooted, and sustainable mental health intervention model within the elementary education setting. This study reinforces the importance of revitalizing traditional games as a pedagogical medium that not only preserves culture but also supports children’s psychological well-being
