Abstract

This study delves into the feminist themes in contemporary Minang literature, particularly concerning urbanization and modernization. Specifically, it focuses on two short stories by Minang authors to explore the representation of feminism during the time of writing. Through these works, the authors aim to highlight the issues faced by women in Minangkabau, including limited educational opportunities, societal pressure to marry early, and the pursuit of decision-making autonomy. The discussion of feminist discourse in literature sheds light on the complex relationship between urban and rural influences on gender roles and expectations. Abstract

The 14th General Election has significantly changed Malaysia when Barisan Nasional suffered its first ever defeat since Independence. However, among the Malay majority, there was a growing sense of political anxiety and uneasiness as a result of the perceived loss of power, and to some extent, the erosion of national identity. In response, the nationalists and the Islamists have regrouped and reunited. This is manifested with the formal alliance of the two largest Malay-based parties, UMNO and PAS. Amidst the backdrop of this new political realignment, social media played an important role in setting the narrative, and mobilising the masses. Therefore, working from within this background, this paper analysed the discourse of the new Malay nationalism on social media by employing a social media tool, SeoTools, to analyse the Twitter data. The findings revealed a new insight into the dynamics of the Malay mind and motivation from the context of politics, religion, and economy. There was a significant correlation between popular sentiment and social media discourse, in that there was a renewed resurgence to reassert traditional values and identity. The failure to rein in the emotion, and the expectation, eventually cause the fall of Pakatan Harapan in 2020.

Abstract

Rusli Amran, a Minangkabau intellectual born in Padang on September 14, 1922, has left numerous footprints in the intellectual world and Indonesian history. His works have indirectly but significantly shaped public understanding of past events, particularly in West Sumatra during the colonial era. Although Rusli Amran's contributions to Indonesian history are widely recognized, a more in-depth analysis of his intellectual framework and specific methodology used in his historical investigations is still needed. From the four significant events in West Sumatra (1981-1997), namely the arrival of the VOC in Padang, the Padri War, the Batipuh Rebellion, and the Three Unites: (Ombilin Coal Mine, Railway, and Teluk Bayur Harbor), Rusli Amran demonstrates that the four historical events during the Dutch colonial period in West Sumatra were interconnected. The main factor was the ease with which the people could be incited against each other. The Dutch colonial government exploited this main factor, which caused the people to be divided, and the indigenous people were easily manipulated, liked to be bribed, and prioritized power. Meanwhile, the Padris, who adhered to Islamic teachings, strongly disliked anything that was haram. This is what made the people of West Sumatra easily provoked. The Dutch colonial government also took advantage of this moment.

Abstract

The problem addressed in this research focuses on the socio-cultural transformation of the Minangkabau elite during the colonial period, particularly in Nagari Kurai. Using the historical research method, the study traces the evolution of the local elites through archival analysis and ethnographic records. The key finding reveals that the establishment of Bukittinggi as a colonial center and the spread of modernity in the early 20th century prompted the rise of a new urban elite, distinct from traditional authorities. In conclusion, the study suggests that colonial modernity played a pivotal role in reshaping cultural and political hierarchies in Minangkabau society.

Abstract

This research delves into the theme of madness in the novel "Racun Puan" by Ni Nyoman Ayu Suciatrini. The story is set in Bali Province, an area with a high incidence of mental illness. In "Racun Puan," multiple characters, a family comprising a father, mother, and child, grapple with madness. The study aims to explore the psychological challenges faced by the characters and the author's perspective on these issues. To conduct the research, a Literary Psychology review was employed, drawing from Jacques Lacan's Psychoanalysis theory, which explores the formation of the self through the real, imaginary, and symbolic orders. The research applies Lacanian Psychoanalysis to analyze the characters' psychological journeys, beginning with their traumatic experiences (real order), followed by their development in the imaginary order or mirror stage during childhood, and culminating in the symbolic order as they strive to fulfill unmet desires from the real order. Additionally, the author's viewpoint on the characters' psychological struggles is presented as a critique of the patriarchal culture and social caste system in Balinese society, indicating that these systems are no longer relevant in contemporary society and can contribute to mental health issues. The study's findings highlight the psychological impact of Balinese society's patriarchal culture and social structure, which manifest as mental disorders, particularly madness.
