Abstract

Christian Church has been begun to pay attention to the local culture with involving it as the new resources of ecological spirituality in efforts of the church to study and respond the environmental crisis issues. One of elements of the local culture can be involved in that effort is Wari Sitelupuluh (WS) in Karo Culture. The research aims to find WS ecological spirituality dimensions as an alternative resource to strengthen the ecological spirituality of Karonese Church. The research used qualitative approach with enculturation theology method. The result of the research shows that WS have three applied ecological spirituality dimensions: the experience of the spirit, religious manifestation, and the expression of the spirit of the age. These three dimensions emerge two theological implications that lies WS in source of applied resistance spirituality towards anthropocentric modernconventional spirituality. The two theological implications are the sense of penggejapen (meaning: to feel) and the consciousness of rest. Keywords: Consciousness of rest, Ecological Spirituality, Penggejapen, Spirituality, Wari Sitelupuluh

Abstract

This paper aims to show the need to deciphere the movement of the Holy Spirit correctly in the post-truth era, where truth is determined by the dominant system, and not the correct system, as Michel Foucault said.Through the views of Christian pneumatology in both Eastern and Western theological traditions, Asian context, media analysis and philosophy, this paper analyzes anti-Islam propaganda videos by Robert Spencer. The HolySpirit certainly didn’t blow on Spencer’s propaganda, because the Spirit basically unites and not divides (Galatians 5:21-23). In the Pentecost, the Holy Spirit enabled the apostles to be open and accepting differences in language and the aspects contained therein: culture, beliefs, and customs. The pneumatological views of Zizioulas, Jurgen Moltmann, Karl Rahner, Michael Welker, Clark Pinnock, and the Bishops of Asia emphasize that the Holy Spirit who is still moving contains the power that sustains and inspires people towards truth and peace. Hegel’s dialectical philosophy of the Spirit can be a way of thinking for the faithful to critically deciphere the movements of the Spirit through digital literacy. In the digital world, humans as “Hearers of the Word” are “Password Breakers”who are critical in deciphering the movements of the Spirit. Keywords: Holy Spirit, Church, dialogue, post-truth, media

Abstract

Freedom of religion and belief has long been accepted globally as human rights. This right is formally enshrined in international human rights instruments such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Indonesia has also adopted these international human rights instruments in its policies and implementation in the applicable laws as seen in the inclusion of this right in the 1945 Constitution, Law no. 39 of 1999 and Law no. 12 of 2005. However, in practice, this right is often violated by the state and civil society either by action (commission) or by omission.  This study also shows religious intolerance, radicalism, and fundamentalism are the manifestations of real challenges in promoting unity in diversity in the country. Therefore, this study recommends the Indonesian government to: review some its policies that are contrary to international and national human rights instruments; cancel lower legal products that are contrary to the 1945 Constitution and other laws; take legal action to suppress and prevent radical and intolerant groups from carrying out violence, discrimination and persecution against certain religious minorities; restore the rights of groups or individuals that have been violated in relation to the freedom to practice or adhere to their respective religions; and improve religious tolerance and moderation education in formal and non-formal educational institutions. Keywords: kebebasan beragama; hak asasi manusia; instrumen HAM; intoleransi; toleransi; kekerasan; moderasi beragama.

Abstract

Abstract: This article intends to critically dissect Pope Francis’ discourse on synodality at the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the institution of the Synod of Bishops on 17 October 2015. First of all, it tackles theconcept of synodality briefly and then elaborate on the various aspects of synodality. By using the method of content analysis and literature study, the author - in the light of Pope Francis’ discourse - seeks to provide somecritical notes on what the spirit and practice of synodality does means and does not mean.  The novelty of this article lies in its attempt to see the relevance of the discourse for the Indonesian context. The author argues that the themes of clericalism, democratization in the Church, the development of civil society based on justice and brotherhood, dialogue between religions are relevant for our context. The author concludes that a correct understanding of synodality as a constitutive dimension of the Church must be possessed by all the faithful because it greatly determines the existence and the life of the Church as well as Her mission in the world.  Key words: Diskursus, sinodalitas, Paus Fransiskus, Gereja, Konteks Indonesia

Abstract

In the first place this article describes the background for the global ethos declared by the parliament of world religions in Chicago in 1993. That background is the parliament of religions itself and Hans Küng, the originator of the global ethos project, who with his team at Tübingen wrote the draft for the declaration. After that, the contents of the declaration on global ethos are discussed according to the two principles and five values put forward. In the second part, reflections are made on the relevance of this declaration on global ethos for interreligious dialogue in Indonesia. This ethos can only be implemented in a long process in which each religion explores its respective tradition to find the motivation for implementing that ethos. The results of this research and deepening need to be shared between religions in dialogue, which helps them to complement and support each other. Finally, it is emphasized that the Indonesian Philosophy and Theology Association should participate in intellectual research on the values of global ethos from a Christian perspective and should form networks with research institutes and universities from other religions to further promote understanding and working together between different religions in Indonesia and Asia. Abstract

Abstract: This paper proposes a new way of understanding celibacy. The world offers that the most important thing is an active and free life, that is, one cannot be a complete and warm human being in a relationshipwithout a genital sexual experience. The world underestimates celibacy and wants to prove that the choice of celibate life will result in compensation secretly, illegally, and will lead to destructive and manipulative relationships. The thoughts of John Paul II are relevant in an effort to offer a paradigm of sexual liberation, to develop, and to maintain for the creation of sexuality values and the call to life for the sake of the Kingdom of God. John Paul II’s thoughts on celibacy for the sake of the Kingdom of God in the perspective of theology of the body become material for reflection and input for people who live celibate to live in harmony with all the complexities of their bodies.  Keywords: Celibacy, John Paul II, Kingdom of God, theology of the body, Rome Catholic.

Abstract

Abstract:This article aims to map out Hannah Arendt’s proposal on democratic political action as a solution to the problem of totalitarianism. For this purpose, the article will consist of three parts. The first part will deal with the problem of totalitarianism as reflected in The Origins of Totalitarianism. The second part will deal with Arendt’s philosophical proposal of democracy as political action against totalitarianism as its enemy. It argues that freedom and constitution are the basis of people’s political action in public space for the sake of nation and community. The third part will deal with the problem of human rights and Arendt’s proposal of political natality. According to the principle of natality, people as subjects of politics are capable to find their own ways to preserve their own life. Human transcendence is actualized in time frame. As conclusion, the paper will discuss the contribution of Arendt’s thoughts of people’s transcendence and its implications in facing the mob-rule.Key Words: constitutionalism, democracy, freedom, Hannah Arendt, revolution, totalitarianism

Abstract

In the 21st century, due to its incessant auto-criticism, the orientation of science is split into two. On the one hand, the monolythic tendency of positivism -with its physicalistic paradigm- is still prevalent. On the other, the tendency of openess toward the complexity of reality is also thriving. The latter would include the openess toward non physical variables or even toward esoteric experience. At this junction, the concept ofethnoepistemology is worth considering. With regard to this, this article seeks to see the fundamental differences between the universal-scientific epistemology and ethnoepistemology. Ethnoepistemology is examined in terms of its local ontological-worldview, which mostly is spiritual in character.  It was found out that the local worldview generates a particular knowledge, with specific logic, method and vocabulary of its own. Complemented with some case-studies, the article comes up with the idea that the mistery of the world can be accessed from many points of view, resulting in different kinds of knowledge. That said, while scientific epistemology is not the only possible one, ethnopistemology can upgrade itself by learning from the work-ethos of scientific epistemology.  Key words: episteme, worldview, logic, interdependency, holistic, experiential
