Abstract

The progress of biblical interpretation today is the fruit of prophetic dialogue, a basic exegetical attitude shown especially since the Reformation, thanks to Martin Luther’s prophetic courage. He brought the Bible back to the centre of the Church’s life and to its function as its highest authority. Moreover, Luther also paved the way for developing historical-critical methods by revising patristic hermeneutics, emphasizing the literal sense over allegorical ones. Because prophetic dialogue was Luther’s basic perspective, much of his exegesis is still valid today. Modern exegetes interpret the Bible from a similar perspective, and as a result their interpretation promotes ecumenism and inter-religious dialogue. One important initiative is Scriptural Reasoning promoted by Jewish, Christian and Muslim exegetes. Keywords: Reform, counter-reform, prophetic dialogue, critical attitude, courage, freedom, truth, authority, humanism, historicalcritical methods, synchronic approach ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Penafsiran Alkitab dari Perspektif Dialog Profetis:Belajar dari Sejarah. Kata-kata kunci:

Abstract

Story-telling often conveys a message about a particular problem. The bitter stories of victims as recorded here are just a small part of many such experiences which pierce our conscience, abusing the dignity that is within each one of us. Besides these stories, this essay includes data from victims to remind us that today we face an extremely serious problem in human trafficking. From the cases handled by the Women’s Division of TRUK-F (a faith-based human rights NGO), it is clear that many parties are responsible, commencing with individuals and families, but including government institutions. The problem of human trafficking can befall anyone. TRUK-F has struggled to accompany victims while active in awarenessbuilding campaigning about the problem. The number of cases increases starkly by the day while the bitter stories of the victims, together with the anxiety and restlessness of their families, should invite the concern of everybody to engage in assisting victims while advocating for the ending of this inhuman trade. Abstract

Experience of encountering and being together with friends of a number of other religious traditions has contributed to changing the way one thinks, speaks and acts. This occurs only when there is a sincere readiness to open oneself to the other while at the same time acknowledging and appreciating plurality in the human family. In the Christian Church, both Catholic and Protestant, this can be understood as a result of the Second Vatican Council. In the context of Indonesia, and more specifically in Jogyakarta and in NTT Province, ecumenical relations between Catholics and Protestants indicate a desire for renewal (aggiornamento) in our common life. This is clear in collaboration between institutes of higher education, such as studying theology together, the use of a common Bible, acceptance of the deuterokanonika, meditation in common, and so forth. In such togetherness the ecclesial unity that Jesus prayed for derives its meaning. Kata-kata kunci: Perjumpaan, pembaruan, kesatuan, oikumene, tantangan, misi, kontekstualisasi, persaudaraan sejati

Abstract

Abstract: Waste is generated by humans from a production process, both industrial and household. Waste is what’s left over from daily activities and is considered useless. However, when waste is recycled and reprocessed into something useful, waste obtains an economic value again. And so, piles of waste are simultaneously changed not only into arenas where the poor compete, but also into arenas where humans prey on each other. On piles of waste, we find never-ending poverty, which is prepared by the state and permitted by the Church. On piles of waste, we find an enduring culture of poverty.Using qualitative methods and a case-study approach, this study aims to uncover the practice of enduring poverty in the town of Maumere. Keywords: waste, scavengers, culture of impoverishment. Kata-kata kunci: sampah, pemulung, budaya pemiskinan.

Abstract

Abstract: This article looks at the issues of discipleship and citizenship in the context of Asian Christianity in terms of “belonging”. The concept of discipleship refers to the concept of belonging within the church, while the concept of citizenship refers to belonging within the nation-state. Thus the issue of belonging within these two spheres is a sub-set of the questions relating to public theology within Asian Christianity. The first issue considered is the question as to what extent the assumptions of public Christian theology actually are the assumptions of post-Enlightenment western Christian theology alone, and therefore have only very indirect links with Asian Christianity. The second issue is the intercultural nature of Christian theology, and its implications for public theology, including discipleship and citizenship. The third issue is the reality of Asian society and Asian Christian theology, particularly public theology. Where Christianity is a minority (albeit, large minority), what is the contribution of a public Christian theology to the debates of civil society? In this section the author looks at the concrete reality of violence in Asia, and seek to analyse how the dynamics of Pauline theology frequently used in Asia engage with the fact of violence. Finally the article seeks to answer the question as to what we can learn from Asian Christian contexts on the interaction of faith and culture in relation to Christian discipleship and engaged citizenship. Abstract

Abstract: This article contains the idea of Pope Francis’ contextualizations as expressed in some of his encyclicals. In his Evangelii Gaudium (Joy of the Gospel), Pope Francis supports inculturation as well as having the view that Hellenist culture is particularly appropriate in expressing Christian faith, and thus needs to be appreciated as a norm for the Church aside from the Holy Bible. In his Laudato Si (On Care for our Common Home), Pope Francis refers to a method used in liberation theology that is “See – judge – act”. Pope Francis stresses the importance of the process of observation of situations, considering the causes, and designing the actions. By referring to chapter 8 of the Apostolic Mandate Amoris Laetitia (The Joy of Love), the risks that must always be carried by each person who wishes to confront the Gospel with concrete-actual conditions are discussed. In the concluding part of this article several examples of the Pope’s sensitivity towards cultures and unusual and complex social political situations are shown by referring to the Magnum Principium (The Great Principle) Decree and the visit of Pope Francis to Myanmar. Keywords: Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium, Laudato Si’, Amoris Laetitia, Magnum Principium, theology inculturation

Abstract

This article focuses on Capability Approach in Philosophy and the Possibility of Politics of Recognition: to reconstruct Ricoeur’s practical philosophy. Based on his philosophical question: what is capable self? we search for the meaning of human capability which will imply an understanding of the self and the recognition of its basic personal capacities, from where proceeds mutual recognition. Since this is the main goal of Ricoeur, I choose to expose this part of his work with the objective of structuring its ethical aim, which is to live good life with and for others in just institutions. Here, love, justice and the poetics of the gift will play significant roles. This study is divided into three main parts. Part One is a discussion of the phenomenology of the capable self that aims to emphasize the meaning of personal capacities in terms of self’s ability. Part Two presents ethics and the politics of recognition in three sub-themes: self-esteem, solicitude for others and justice in institutions. This leads to the Part Three which completes the previous study by analyzing the relationship between love, justice and possibility of the politics of mutual recognition. Keywords: Capable self, Mutual Recognition, Ethical Aim and the Poetics of the Gift.

Abstract

Public understanding of Covid 19 is often seen as a source of problems in pandemic time. This article presents a discussion that the logic of understanding is different from the logic of explanation. If in scientific explanation, law and scientific theory are regarded as the premises, all human understanding departs from the historical experience of the world which belongs to the community. In a phenomenological perspective, human understanding is rational because it is oriented toward convergence without coincidence, unification without equivalence, commonality without identity, and cooperation without uniformity. The Study of the musical experiences of East Nusa Tenggara shows that the people of East Nusa Tenggara have a transverse rationality, in a sense that is convergent with the health protocol, although is based on the mythical cosmology. Based on this kind of logos, any effort in solving Covid 19's problem as a point of convergence needs interpretation of local community different understanding.Key words: Covid 19, Edmund Husserl, Phenomenology, rationality, transversality.

Abstract

Abstract: The Asian reality is characterized by religious and cultural diversity. Social changes and especially poverty are the complexities they contain. In such circumstances, the Church is called to face this reality. Theologians are trying to find an understanding of theology that fits the Asian context. C.S. Song is an Asian theologian who tries to respond to this reality with a thought about the theology of Rahim that he explains using the narrative method. The theology of Rahim is a theology that guides humans to God's love and suffering and leads humans to freedom, justice and peace. The basic premise of Rahim's theology is contained in Passio: Passio as the starting point of theology, Rahim as Passio's "Mountain of Fire", and the disappearance of Passio in Christian Theology. Passio means love and suffering. Passio becomes suffering when faced with the reality of poverty, oppression, and it is precisely through that suffering that Passio becomes true love. Through the above understanding, the Church is called to realize its mission as a prophet who can present the Kingdom of God in the lives of the faithful. C.S. Song through the Theology of Rahim invites every believer to participate in realizing the Kingdom of God in the world. This participation should give birth to solidarity for others who are suffering, oppressed and exploited. Keywords: Asian Theology, poverty, suffering, Passio, Choan Seng-Song, Womb Theology

Abstract

This paper investigates how Indonesian Catholics living in outlying areas in eastern Indonesia experience fear in relation to the events that have arisen from the massacre of suspected Indonesian communists in 1965. It is concerned with why the Catholic Church created an image of communists as fear-inspiring beings, and how this fear was maintained after the communists had been largely eliminated through the state-sponsored killings of 1965/66. The object of inquiry is a historical document produced in 1967 by the Catholic Church that sought to explain events leading up to 1965. This paper analyses the forces that underlie this fear in terms of the secular fear of communism, the religious fear of Islamic fanaticism, and the supernatural fear of communist ghosts as a result of the killing of communists in 1965. It argues that the fear of 1965 is not a matter of the past but part of the present, an argument that is in accordance with Martin Heidegger’s contention that all fears are concerned with the present. Keywords: Ketakutan, Katolik, komunis, Islam, hantu, sekuler, agama, supranatural.
