Abstract

Freedom of religion and belief has long been accepted globally as human rights. This right is formally enshrined in international human rights instruments such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Indonesia has also adopted these international human rights instruments in its policies and implementation in the applicable laws as seen in the inclusion of this right in the 1945 Constitution, Law no. 39 of 1999 and Law no. 12 of 2005. However, in practice, this right is often violated by the state and civil society either by action (commission) or by omission.  This study also shows religious intolerance, radicalism, and fundamentalism are the manifestations of real challenges in promoting unity in diversity in the country. Therefore, this study recommends the Indonesian government to: review some its policies that are contrary to international and national human rights instruments; cancel lower legal products that are contrary to the 1945 Constitution and other laws; take legal action to suppress and prevent radical and intolerant groups from carrying out violence, discrimination and persecution against certain religious minorities; restore the rights of groups or individuals that have been violated in relation to the freedom to practice or adhere to their respective religions; and improve religious tolerance and moderation education in formal and non-formal educational institutions. Keywords: kebebasan beragama; hak asasi manusia; instrumen HAM; intoleransi; toleransi; kekerasan; moderasi beragama.

Abstract

Zen is a way of understanding our true self as human before any concept is produced by the thinking mind. This true self can be perceived, when we let go all of forms of concepts and abstractions, and move to the realm of intuition. In this sense, intuition is direct experience of reality without the mediation of any kind of concepts or abstractions. The Zen tradition offers two ways to help people achieve this state of mind, namely Zazen (sitting meditation) and Koan (interview with the Zen Master). The awareness of the true self, or intuition, can be seen also as the state of enlightenment. This is the true freedom. This paper examins Zazen and Koan practices in the Zen tradition critically, and looks at how both can contribute to the development of human life. Kata-kata kunci: Zazen, Koan, Zen, Jati Diri Sejati, Pencerahan Batin.

Abstract

The Pentecostal Churches and Charismatic movements within the mainstream Churches are by far the fastest growing sectors of Christianity. In particular, migrants are attracted from their mainstream ecclesial roots to a myriad of Pentecostal communities in urban settings, to congregations that are small and welcoming, but also to the mega-Churches. This essay looks at key characteristics of urban migrants and the significant elements of the Pentecostal/charismatic communities that attract them as new members. Particular attention is given both to the evolving political dimension of these communities and to the “gender paradox” whereby women are more likely to join Pentecostal/Charismatic Churches where they discover a renewed dignity and identity while these very Churches are largely governed by men. Examples are given as diverse as that among Protestant urban migrants in mainland China, and Catholic domestic and international migrants within and from the Philippines. The essay concludes with an analysis that looks at the data as a reflection of modernity and its consequent challenge to mainstream Churches that have as yet failed to adapt. Keywords: Pentecostal Church, Charismatic Movement, the immigrants,Chinese immigrants, migrant Filipino, gender paradox of modernity ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Gereja-gereja Pantekostal, juga gerakan Karismatik dalam Gereja-Gereja arus utama, merupakan sektor kekristenan yang sedang bertumbuh secara paling pesat. Kata-kata kunci: Gereja Pentakostal, Gerakan Karismatik, kaum perantau, perantau Cina, migran Filipina, gender paradoks, modernitas

Abstract

This paper gives some basic ideas regarding the relationship between globalisation and the Second Vatican Council in Asia as a starting point for more detailed studies in the future. The first part discusses the situation of the churches at the edge of Asian societies and Asian socio-cultural contexts as influenced by globalisation. Then some social concerns are outlined such as poverty, authoritarian regimes and ecological dangers where the church and Asian societies encounter each other. Church engagement in these issues is justified by reference to a number of Counciliar documents such as the Gaudium et spes Constitution and the Diginitatis humanae Declaration. The final part outlines a number of problems such as inculturation, inter-religious dialogue and religious-cultural dialogue. The author emphasises that this paper is not a theological evaluation, but rather a sociological one. Kata-kata Kunci: globalisasi, Konsili Vatikan II, Asia, Gereja, konteks sosio-budaya, pembangunan.

Abstract

Intolerance and violence in the name of religion often flare up in Indonesia. In this regard the state often fails, and indeed itself becomes part of the violation of the citizen’s right to religious freedom. One root of the problem is a confused understanding among law enforcers and among a part of the citizenship concerning the relationship between religion and the state, between private and public morality. This essay attempts to formulate a concept of the relationship between religion and the state from the perspective of two models from political philosophy, namely liberalism and perfectionism. Perfectionism offers a solution to the pathology of liberalism which tends to privatise the concept of the good life. In perfectionism the thematisation of the concept of the good life as in ideologies and religions has to be given a place in the public sphere. In Indonesia this role is taken by the national ideology of Pancasila. Pancasila requires that religious values be translated into public morality. Kata-kata Kunci: liberalisme, perfeksionisme, konsep hidup baik (agama), negara, Pancasila.

Abstract

Abstract This paper explains an Islamic eschatology according to Shia, and suggests that []Shia eschatology always has two dimensions – religion and politics – and the two dimensions are inseperable. Discussion surrounding Shia eschatology in this paper is particularly focused on the Mahdism concept and the figure of Mahdi. This paper is thus not intended to make a generalisation about ‘Islamic eschatology’ as if there were only one type of Islam with a single understanding of eschatology. Most Indonesian Muslims are of Sunni type of Islam, and may not share the viewpoint of Shia at all concerning eschatology. The key purpose of this paper is rather to explore one version of understanding of eschatology within Islam in order to provoke further reflection on other perspectives on eschatology. Keywords: Eschatology, Islam, Politics, Religion, Shia, Sunni, Prophet Muhammad, Mahdism, Mahdi Abstrak Tulisan ini menjelaskan sebuah eskatologi Islam menurut Shia, dan mengusulkan bahwa versi eskatologi Shia selalu memiliki dua dimensi – agama dan politik – dan keduanya tak terpisahkan. Kata-Kata Kunci: Eskatologi, Islam, Politik, Agama, Shia, Sunni, Nabi Muhammad, Mahdisme, Mahdi.

Abstract

In his latest book the biblical theologian Gerrit Singgih looks in detail at verses in the Bible about same sex relationships that ring negative and also the few more positive examples of same sex relations. This article contrasts Singgih’s exegesis with that of Rome, both in documents from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and also in the Catechism of the Indonesian bishops. Rome states that finding oneself with “homosexual tendencies” is morally neutral while also declaring it “objectively bad.” According to Rome every sexual act has to be open to life and so homosexual relations are sinful. However, this is demonstrably wrong, as for instance, for infertile or elderly married couples. The writer concludes that he is in full agreement with Gerrit Singgih who interprets the negative verses in the Bible within the context of biblical times.  Keywords: LBGTQ+, Hermenutic Pattern, Creative Interpretation, Neutral Status, Natural Law.

Abstract

Abstract: This article intends to critically dissect Pope Francis’ discourse on synodality at the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the institution of the Synod of Bishops on 17 October 2015. First of all, it tackles theconcept of synodality briefly and then elaborate on the various aspects of synodality. By using the method of content analysis and literature study, the author - in the light of Pope Francis’ discourse - seeks to provide somecritical notes on what the spirit and practice of synodality does means and does not mean.  The novelty of this article lies in its attempt to see the relevance of the discourse for the Indonesian context. The author argues that the themes of clericalism, democratization in the Church, the development of civil society based on justice and brotherhood, dialogue between religions are relevant for our context. The author concludes that a correct understanding of synodality as a constitutive dimension of the Church must be possessed by all the faithful because it greatly determines the existence and the life of the Church as well as Her mission in the world.  Key words: Diskursus, sinodalitas, Paus Fransiskus, Gereja, Konteks Indonesia

Abstract

Tandasnya lagi, “Sebelum saya mengidap HIV saya hidup sembarangan, tapi kini saya hidup serba tertib. Dulu saya hanya ingat diri dan mengejar kenikmatan seketika, kesenangan sesaat, kepuasan sepintas. Kini saya bekerja keras untuk ibuku dan anak-anak kami yang masih kecil, yang sangat membutuhkan kehadiran saya.” Gaya hidupnya serta hasrat jiwanya sudah berbalik 180 derajat. Status positif menjadi berkat bagi dia, lebih lagi bagi istri dan anak-anak mereka.
