Abstract

This essay begins as a reflection on the Oscar award winning documentary Spotlight which relates how an investigative team of journalists at The Boston Globe in 2002 uncovered the extent of the sexual abuse of minors by clergy in the Archdiocese of Boston, and its systematic cover-up by Church and civic leaders. The investigation moved from a study of individual cases to the corrupt culture endemic in a hierarchical Church run by a caste of “celibate” males. The scandal is global, and remains with us today. The essential shift from the priority of avoiding scandal (and thus covering-up) to the placing of the victim at the centre, has yet to become consistent policy. Spotlight’s relevance to the Indonesian Church’s culture of silence is clear. Urgency demands acknowledgement of past and present failure, and immediate action to protect minors, punish offending priests, and put bishops who cover-up on trial. The clericalistic culture, so frequently condemned by Pope Francis, needs dismantling.

Abstract

This paper presents Michel Foucault’s thoughts on historical events in the past as they impact on the constitution of the self in the present. Thus, Foucault is known as an historian of the present. An expert in the history of the system of thought, he analyses how people thought and behaved throughout the history of philosophy from the Rennaisance to the classical period (17 th-18 in Foucault’s classification) and onto the 20thth century. As a postmodernist (and post-structuralist) thinker, he critiques modern rationality based mainly on the ego, subject, and consciousness, as passed down to present day thinking by René Descartes. He analyses critically this exclusive rationality and confronts it with his notion of discourse. This paper also presents ways of reading important historical events which were, and are, influential in human life in line with Foucault’s criticism. Abstract

The domcratisation process which has been pursued by the Indonesian nation since the reformation era is now caught up in a procedural democracy without the wellbeing of the people or social justice. Proceduralism is the most basic criticism of liberal democracy by republicans and communitarians. From a communitarian perspective, the Pancasila state ideology as the normative base and collective identity of the Indonesian nation is able to offer a way out of the crisis of liberal democracy as practised in Indonesia. This essay attempts to show that it is not an effort to build a democratic order upon procedural ethics as is assumed by liberals, but rather the need to provide a substantial ethical foundation. This is the case as a democratic system is not filled with atomistic individuals but with social relationships. A democratic process always moves within a society shaped by social relationships and various complex processes for the formation of communities. Democracy is built upon a collective identity which is formal yet fragile. In the Indonesian context, the Pancasila is the collective expression the nation’s identity. As a collective identity, the Pancasila will never be complete, but will always be in a state of becoming rediscovering itself anew. In the final section, two methods are presented, namely the method of deliberative and agonistic democracy as a way proposed by contemporary political philosophy in overcoming conflicts in values in the face of pluralism. The Pancasila will become the collective identity which animates the people of Indonesia, only when it is open to a process of rational deliberation in the public sphere and is ready to be only one alternative in the midst of a competitive discourse. Abstract

To live as church in Asia is very demanding. Asia is known as the continent that gave birth to world religions whose followers in Asia live close to one another as neighbours. Each religion has a certain knowledge about the spiritual richness of her neighbours. Buddhists, for example, know that Christians are requested by the Lord to live a life of self-sacrifice. Christians are called by their master (Jesus) not to go forward fighting on behalf of the cross but to bear their cross on behalf of Jesus, not displaying a self-glorified life but practising self-denial. How is this command to be fulfilled in Asia by the Christian Church? This essay discusses the perspective of one of Asia’s most prominent theologians, Kosuke Koyama. Abstract

Devotion to Mary is one of the most popular religious practices among Catholics, and can be considered one of the oldest forms of popular religiosity. Marian devotions emerged spontaneously as a mixture of elements from local cultures and the Christian faith. However, such practices can become problematic when they overstress certain aspects of human experience together with the role of Mary. This article discusses a text of "The Way of the Cross" which was composed in a dialect of the Lamaholot language as used on the isle of Solor, East Flores. Abstract

Abstract: This article is aimed at introducing Hans Küng’s globalethic and its contributions to world peace. Various crises whichhave hit and are hitting the world motivated Küng to againstruggle to bring peace about and to establish a new, better lifeorder. By a global ethic – a basic consensus on binding values, noncancellablecriteria, and basic attitudes which are affirmed by allreligions, although dogmatically they are different, and which canactually be given by non-believers – Küng emphasizes importantroles of religions without disregarding non-religious communities, which are principally present to bring peace about as the maincharacteristic of their teachings. Specifically, Küng’s opinion isrelevant in an effort to bring peace about in Indonesia, which isvery plural. Realizing that threats against peace and plurality inIndonesia often come and result from interreligious conflicts, adialogue is absolutely necessary. As a concrete form of a globalethic, Küng suggests a critical dialogue. Representatives of thereligions in Indonesia need to step forward and sit together in agive-and-take dialogue which introduces the special aspect andmain direction of each of the religions. Followers’ steadfastnessin the principles and seriousness in following the religions aretwo main keys to a critical dialogue, which can penetrate thefoundation of each religion with all of its consequences. Keywords: Peace, Crisis, Global Ethic, Religion, Critical Dialogue

Abstract

Walter Benjamin’s essay, The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction (1939), has revealed the fundamental changes of modern work of art affected by its mechanical reproduction. Camera, tape recorder, print machine have turned the work of art to be mass consumption, autonomous from tradition and ritual, and it has now a political function. According to Benjamin all of those new technologies have faded up the aura since the work of art lost its authenticity and its uniqueness. We are in the different era than Benjamin’s because nowadays digital reproduction by means of the internet ends the need of medium for the work of art, multiply and spread it very rapidly. The author comments on Benjamin’s analysis and applies it to discuss the ontological, epistemological, and axiological issues of the work of art in the age of digital reproduction. He argues that in the digital age the work of art will be still auratic if it reveals ‘the extraordinary’ in the experience of our humanity. Key words: aura, hyperpolitization, work of art, medium, attention, digital reproduction

Abstract

This article presents a philosophical reflection on the story of Hotel Rwanda’s film from the Ethic’s perspective of Emmanuel Levinas. Hotel Rwanda’s Film tells a story about the conflict between two of Rwanda’s native tribes, Hutu and Tutsi, that highlighting violence and genocide as the impact of the racial discrimination paradigm. By analyzing some events that were pictures from the film, I saw that two interesting ideas to reflect by Levinas’ Ethic perspective. First, about the dangerous tendency of totality by stigmatizing other people by ideas. And the second is the philosophical idea regards to the meaning of encountering the face of the other, as the basis of responsibility to the other man. In that way, Hotel Rwanda’s film can be presenting a relevant illustration for some core on Levinas’ thought that focusing on the ethical problem concerning justice and humanityKeywords: Hutu, Tutsi, Genocide, The Face, The other, Ethics.

Abstract

In the first place this article describes the background for the global ethos declared by the parliament of world religions in Chicago in 1993. That background is the parliament of religions itself and Hans Küng, the originator of the global ethos project, who with his team at Tübingen wrote the draft for the declaration. After that, the contents of the declaration on global ethos are discussed according to the two principles and five values put forward. In the second part, reflections are made on the relevance of this declaration on global ethos for interreligious dialogue in Indonesia. This ethos can only be implemented in a long process in which each religion explores its respective tradition to find the motivation for implementing that ethos. The results of this research and deepening need to be shared between religions in dialogue, which helps them to complement and support each other. Finally, it is emphasized that the Indonesian Philosophy and Theology Association should participate in intellectual research on the values of global ethos from a Christian perspective and should form networks with research institutes and universities from other religions to further promote understanding and working together between different religions in Indonesia and Asia.
