Abstract

Abstract: This paper intends to explore the idea of synodality proposed by Pope Francis as the main theme of the XVI Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops in 2023. From the results of literature research, the author finds that the idea of synodality, in fact, is not new and does not even have a theological basis. The Holy Trinity and the Eucharist are the two theological foundations of the idea of synodality. So that the theme of synodality does not just stop at an idea and a dream, Pope Francis also provides explains the method and dangers during the synod process. The synod method, which can also be useful for the Church's pastoral method, is meeting, listening, and discernment. The danger in the synod process and the life of the Church is a formalism that is triggered by clericalism, intellectualism, and complacency. From the exploration of the two theological foundations and the discourse of Pope Francis regarding the idea of synodality, the primacy of God in the life of the Church, faith as the basis of true participation in the life of the Church, and mission as a consequence of faith, are three important things that need to be constantly considered so that the idea of synodality can be understood and applied appropriately.Keywords:  Church, Synodality, Pope Francis.

Abstract

The meaning of testimony and truth play an important role in both a legal/judicial discourse and a religious, particularly Christian discourse. I trace the history of testimony in legal discourse, beginning with the Hammurabi Code and its influence on ancient legal codes of Mesopotamia, including that found in the Pentateuch and continue with a discussion of multiple meanings of testimony in Augustine and French philosopher, Paul Ricœur that begin to lay the groundwork for bridging the two discourses. Contributions from feminist theology, particularly the validation of women’s experience as a source of theology, the role of immanence, and the shift from understandings of power as “power over” to “power with” as well as a transitional justice framework help make the case for dialog between these two discourses so they can enhance and strengthen each other. Abstract

The author of this article starts from the fact that in Indonesia, as in many other countries, corruption is rapidly escalating, and seemingly is extremely difficult to eradicate. And so the author questions the root of corruption. From an ethical perspective, corruption is clearly categorised as a social sin. In the Catholic view, sin is rooted in what is known as “original sin”. Making use of the study of Eugen Drewermann, the author describes the root of sin as suspicion of God, an attitude that is no longer convinced that God can be relied upon as source of life and basic guarantor of human life. Thus, humans become convinced that they themselves must guarantee the foundation of their existence. To achieve this, humans seek power, property and wealth as the source of apparently guaranteeing the basis of their life. However, humans know in their heart that death is going to take everything away, and so become avaricious and feel that they never own enough to secure themselves. Because of this sinful mechanism, corruption will never be overcome as long as the underlying distrust is not overcome through conviction. In order to oppose corruption, the Church needs to attempt to plant in the hearts of humanity confidence that God can be relied upon as the foundation and guarantor of life. Only then can humans be freed from the necessity of guaranteeing life by their own efforts.

Abstract

Indonesians have the tendency to forget their problems as a way of solving them. The main question to be explored in this paper is who has the task to remember, and what to remember. Forgetfulness is thought to come from several factors: language, the manner one accepts things that happened, and as an escape from problems that are considered unsolveable. Memory has become a political commodity when it is remembered or forgotten for certain goals. Nevertheless, to remember is better than to forget in terms of dealing with the painful past. Remembering is our responsibility to hear the voice of the victims of history, so that tragic history will not repeat itself. Some Indonesian ethnic groups have shown that they have a basis for remembrance in their culture and we can use this as a basis for communal remembrance in dealing with the painful past. Pertanyaan utama yang akan dieksplorasi adalah, siapa yang memiliki tugas utama untuk mengingat, dan apa yang harus diingat. Kebiasaan untuk melupakan di Indonesia muncul dari beberapa faktor: bahasa, penerimaan akan kejadian yang dialami, dan pelarian dari masalah yang dianggap tidak bisa diselesaikan. Ingatan juga menjadi sebuah komoditas politik ketika dia diingat dan dilupakan demi tujuan tertentu. Meskipun menyakitkan, mengingat masa lalu untuk perubahan di masa depan adalah pilihan yang lebih baik dari melupakannya. Mengingat adalah tanggung jawab kepada para korban dalam sejarah supaya suara mereka terdengar, masa lalu tidak terulang lagi, dan perjalanan sebuah bangsa ke depan. Beberapa suku di Indonesia menunjukkan bahwa tindakan mengingat juga ada dalam budaya dan dia dapat digunakan menjadi dasar ingatan komunal bagi bangsa Indonesia dalam penyelesaian kasus-kasus masa lalu yang menyakitkan. Abstract

Hak beragama telah dipertalikan dengan setiap orang sejak lahir, entah dia orang merdeka atau budak, kulit hitam atau putih, lelaki ataupun perempuan. Manifestasi iman tersebut terungkap secara hebat di dalam komunitas jemaat warga kulit hitam selama Masa Kebangkitan Kedua (Second Awakening) di abad ke-18 tatkala banyak orang Afrika masuk kekristenan dalam berbagai denominasi. Di tengah-tengah masa kebangkitan itulah Frederick Douglass lahir di Desa Talbot pada tahun 1818, dari seorang ibu budak warga kulit hitam dan seorang ayah yang diduga majikan warga kulit putih. Kelahiran Douglass ke dalam sistem perbudakan ini memberinya sebuah perspektif kritis atas iman dan efeknya terhadap setiap persoalan sosial, khususnya menyangkut perbudakan. Lebih penting lagi, Douglass mampu secara tajam mengemukakan interpretasiinterpretasi dan ideologi-ideologi kontradiktif mengenai agama/iman sampai ke tingkat yang menempatkan dia pada sebuah jalan dari status budak ke penghapus perbudakan (abolisionis). Harus dicatat bahwa kendatipun Douglass menganggap urusan iman/agama sebagai urusan yang sangat pribadi, namun keyakinan-keyakinannya dibentuk, dituntun, dan dapat didengar dalam pidato-pidato dan tulisan-tulisannya. Penting untuk menggali kehidupan Douglass sebagai seorang budak dan memeriksa apa pengaruh dari Gereja kulit hitam dan agama terhadap tindakan-tindakannya. Kehidupan Douglass sebagai seorang pejuang penghapusan perbudakan akan ditelusuri seraya memberikan perhatian yang intens/mendalam terhadap peranan agama dan Gereja kulit hitam terhadap kematangannya. Abstract

Shortly after he was chosen as Bishop of Rome in April 2005, Benedict XVI took a number of steps towards a new dynamics in inter-faith dialogue. He began by setting down fundamental principles, namely knowing and appreciating one’s own faith as the essential condition for sincere cross-religious encounters. That is why, as a prominent dogmatic theologian, in his theological approach he not infrequently laid down clear boundaries, even in grey areas which sometimes drew strong rejection, for a real theological dialogue is not easy. But, according to Benedict XVI, this is the road we have to travel to arrive at a true dialogue, rather than simply politeness or “lip service”. During his period of service, Catholic-Muslim Forum I and II were created with their final declarations; if followed through globally, there would be no need for any more disputes or enmity between Catholics and Muslims. Unfortunately, reality is different. Today Bishop of Rome Francis wishes to follow-up this mission with a different language and emphasis. The core is the same, that through friendship and the principle of reciprocity, Catholic and Muslim peoples respect and understand each other without fear, for we are all brothers and sisters.

Abstract

Abstract : This article intends to consider the relationship between violence and the sacred, using as a starting point a theory espoused by Rene Girard. According to this theory, Girard demonstrates that violence happens because human beings imitate others in determining a desired object. Because of that imitation, a conflict arises between those who possess the same object. This conflict is calmed-down by transferring the reciprical aggression onto a specific group that becomes the scape-goat, to be sacrificed. The ritual of sacrifice is institutionalised in religion. In this way, religion can channel aggression, but it can also hide human violence, by exoressing violence towards the person of God. Following on, Christian revelation is pictured as being a process, in which God reveals Godself in a true attitude, and demonstrates that the violence expressed is between human beings and not towards God. In summary, the Christian religion can be a religion of salvation when it truly studies and proclaims a picture of God as revealed in Judeo-Christian revelation, climaxed in the person of Jesus of Nazareth. Abstrak : Artikel ini mau meneliti relasi antara kekerasan dan kekeramatan dengan bertolak dari satu teori yang diciptakan oleh René Girard. Dalam teori itu Girard memperlihatkan kekerasan terjadi, karena manusia meniru orang lain dalam menentukan objek yang diinginkan. Karena peniruan itu, terjadilah konflik antara orang yang memilih objek yang sama. Konflik itu diredakan dengan mengalihkan semua agresi timbal balik dalam suatu kelompok kepada satu kambing hitam yang menjadi korban. Ritual korban itu diinstitusionalisasi dalam agama. Dengan demikian agama bisa menyalurkan agresi, tetapi juga menyembunyikan agresi antara manusia dalam kekerasan pada diri Allah. Selanjutnya wahyu kristiani digambarkan sebagai proses, di dalamnya Allah memperkenalkan diri dalam sikap yang benar dan memperlihatkan, agresi itu ada di antara manusia dan bukan dalam diri Allah. Kesimpulannya, agama kristiani bisa menjadi agama penyelamatan bila secara sungguh mempelajari dan mewartakan gambaran tentang Allah yang dinyatakan dalam wahyu Yahudi-Kristen dengan puncaknya dalam diri Yesus dari Nazaret. Abstract

Abstract: Differences in views in a plural community cannot beavoided because each view or philosophy of life is formulated byreasonable people. It is generally accepted that the plurality oflife views must be addressed in the spirit of democracy that relieson the use of reason, where each person or group is given theopportunity to convey their perspectives. But the fact shows thatthe role of reason is getting weaker in deliberation, especially incountries that implement a system of representative democracy.Then, do we thus abandon democracy as an approach in addressingdifferences of opinion? Using a qualitative approach, the authorargues that democracy remains the best choice in addressingdifferences of views. However, based on Arendt’s concept ofpolitics as a speech, the ideal democratic approach should bedeliberative rather than liberal because deliberative democracyaims to transform the perspective of each person or grouhlm.Keywords: politics, pluralism, common sense, agonistic, liberaldemocracy, deliberative democracy, political speech.

Abstract

This article is based on a video by a conservative group in Indonesia that describes the position of Archbishop Vigano and has been circulating in Indonesia recently. The video argues that the Second Vatican Council left the true Church of Jesus Christ and created the Antichrist Church. In particular, they reject the teachings set forth in the Nostra Aetate decree regarding the truths contained in non-Christian religions and also the position regarding religious freedom as taught in the Dignitatis Humanae declaration. Because they do not agree with the basic direction of the teachings of the Second Vatican Council, they also demand that all council documents be canceled. This article responds to this conservative position by asserting and showing that the Church of Jesus Christ is not always the same, but Jesus brought a spirit into the world and the people who live according to that spirit must always seek new institutional forms in accordance with the development of society. It is according to this basic view that the conservative position is corrected by showing some of the historical facts and developments of theology throughout the history of the Church. Keywords: Archbishop Vigano; Second Vatican Council; Nostra Aetate; freedom of religion; Church of Jesus Christ

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian artikel ini adalah untuk berargumen bahwa tesis dari Kitab Kebijaksanaan Salomo adalah bahwa melalui Kebijaksanaan, manusia mampu memahami struktur dunia dan jalan dari penghakiman Tuhan yang menuntun manusia saleh pada keabadian. Kitab Kebijaksanaan Salomo bab 2-5 mengisahkan penganiayaan dan pembunuhan orang benar. Kematian dari orang yang setia ditangan orang jahat menuntut pada persoalan teodesi. Gagasan Yahudi tentang retribusi di dunia bahwa Tuhan yang membalas kebaikan orang saleh dan menghukum orang jahat tidak berlaku pada peristiwa bahwa orang saleh mati ditangan orang jahat di dunia. Pertanyaan mendasar muncul dari krisis tersebut apakah sesudah kematian ada pahala yang diterima orang baik. Kitab Kebijaksanaan Salomo menjawab pertanyaan tersebut dengan meyakinkan bahwa Allah sunguh membalas orang-orang benar, terutama memperhatikan mereka yang meninggal sebelum waktunya.
