Abstract

Abstract This study aims to evaluate the implementation of the Independent Curriculum across various subjects in SMK Terpadu Takwa Belitang, with a focus on the alignment of teaching modules with specified phases. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive method, the research captures real-world data through observations and descriptive analyses. The findings indicate that the Independent Curriculum has been effectively implemented at tenth grade English subjects, incorporating differentiated learning and the use of digital resources. Teachers adapt teaching materials based on student data, facilitate student potential development, and actively communicate with parents. Evaluation methods include formative assessments and reinforcement for material mastery. Challenges faced include teacher preparedness and student engagement, addressed through preparatory measures and creating a conducive learning environment.

Abstract

Vocabulary is a fundamental aspect for language learners, including English as a foreign language in Indonesia. To master the four language skills (speaking, reading, listening, and writing), the main thing is to fulfil vocabulary. This quantitative research, with a pre-experimental one group pre-test and post-test design, will explore the theory and application of the strategy proposed by Brown and Payne 1994. The research aims to see the extent to which reading narrative texts as a vocabulary learning strategy (VLS) can affect the 11th grade students’ vocabulary acquisition. Data collection will be done through a 22-item multiple-choice vocabulary test as the target vocabulary and given at the beginning of the research (pre-test), as well as at the end after the treatment (post-test). The sample of this research were 28 students of the 11th grade class B SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Wuluhan. The data obtained is analysed using statistical analysis with tests using SPSS version 27.0.1. The results of this study showed a significant effect after implementing reading narrative text as the vocabulary learning strategy on the 11th grade students’ vocabulary acquisition. It is hoped that the results of this research can make a meaningful contribution to the existing literature on the effects of using reading narrative texts as a vocabulary learning strategy on students' vocabulary acquisition, and implement the concept in their teaching practice

Abstract

This paper explains ambition and power through Tzvetan Todorov’s structuralist model of narrative equilibrium, disruption, and recognition by examining Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus (1604) and HBO’s Game of Thrones (2011–2019). It interprets how the moral trajectory of ambition as a destructive force transcends medium and era through linking Renaissance humanism with postmodern visual storytelling. Following a qualitative comparative method, this study provides textual and visual analysis of key moments in both works and demonstrates how Faustus and Cersei Lannister embody a shared Todorovian tragic pattern. Updated with recent critical scholarship on narratology and adaptation studies, the research describes that both figures represent the timeless Faustian conflict between desire and ethics. The analysis argues that when ambition is detached from moral equilibrium, it functions as a universal engine of tragedy that sustains the continuity between classical drama and modern television narratives.

Abstract

This study aims to develop and evaluate a printable reading comprehension test specifically designed for pesantren students in low-technology learning environments. Utilizing the ADDIE instructional design model—comprising Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation—the research addresses the digital divide and material constraints often found in religious educational settings. The methodology employed a Research and Development (R&D) design involving ten students from MA Al Mahrusiyah at Daru Zainab, selected through purposive sampling. Data collection involved a printable closed-test format, specifically a fill-in-the-blank assessment, supplemented by semi-structured interviews to capture qualitative insights. Quantitative results indicated a significant improvement in reading proficiency, with mean scores rising from 5.40 in the pretest to 9.10 in the post-test. A paired-sample t-test confirmed this improvement was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Qualitative findings further revealed that the structured, context-sensitive nature of the test helped students focus on deeper meaning rather than guessing. While the study is limited by its small sample size and short-term scope, it demonstrates that systematic instructional design can bridge the gap between pedagogical theory and real-world educational constraints. Ultimately, this research provides a feasible and effective alternative for fostering reading comprehension in under-resourced environments where digital tools are impractical.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the nonverbal communication used by the resilient heroine “Elodie” in the film Damsel (2024) directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. Used descriptive qualitative combined with content analysis to collecting the data from the Damsel (2024) film with a duration of 1 hour 48 minutes. The data collection technique in this study includes several steps: understanding the theory of nonverbal communication by DeVito, watching the film several times, reading the film script, identifying the nonverbal cues performed by Elodie, making notes and coding the data based on six categories. The aspects of nonverbal communication that are the focus of this study are body messages, facial communication, eye communication, touch communication, silence, and spatial messages and territoriality. Based on the results of data analysis, 55 nonverbal communication cues were found. The first finding is body messages with 4 data (7%), such as gestures and body movement. Second, facial communication with 10 data (18%), including expressions and smiles. Third, eye communication with 13 data (24%), like eye contact and eye avoidance. Fourth, touch communication with 12 data (22%), including emotional and ritual touches. Fifth, silence with 7 data (13%), referring to communicative pauses. And sixth, spatial messages and territoriality with 9 data (16%), such as proxemic distance. Thus, it can be concluded that the film Damsel contains many instances of nonverbal communication, and the most dominant aspect used by the character Elodie is facial communication with 13 occurrences or 24%.
