Abstract

This article discusses the role of zakat in strengthening the resilience of families affected by stunting in West Nusa Tenggara Province (NTB), focusing on two districts with high stunting prevalence, namely East Lombok and Central Lombok. Using a qualitative approach with a case study design, this study explores the socio-economic conditions of mustahik families, the implementation of zakat in nutritional interventions, and opportunities for integrating zakat with regional stunting prevention policies. The results show that most families with stunted children come from poor groups with limited access to nutrition, low levels of health literacy, and unstable incomes. The implementation of zakat in NTB is currently still dominated by a charitable approach, which limits its effectiveness in strengthening families’ economic resilience. However, existing productive zakat programs have demonstrated measurable impacts, increasing family income by 25-35% and improving children's nutritional consumption patterns. The integration of zakat with regional nutrition policies has great potential to strengthen the Islamic-based social protection system. This study confirms that zakat can be a strategic instrument in addressing stunting when managed in a productive, targeted, and collaborative manner between zakat institutions and local governments.

Abstract

This study examines the socio-juridical tension surrounding Pasuwitan the unregistered marriage practice of the Samin Indigenous People (Sedulur Sikep) who ideologically reject state formalities. Within Indonesia's legal pluralism, this customary practice clashes with national family law, especially the Compilation of Islamic Law (KHI), which prioritizes formal registration. Using a qualitative socio-juridical approach grounded in Interpretive Anthropology, Legal Pluralism, and Legal Culture theories, and drawing on systematic library research of legislation, court decisions, and scholarly literature on family law and Samin customary marriage, the study finds that Pasuwitan embodies living law, upholding ethical norms like lifelong monogamy (siji kanggo selawase) while substituting formal Islamic marriage requirements (e.g., ijab qabul, wali) with verbal vows. Consequently, such unions are legally classified as nikah siri, rendering offspring "illegitimate" and obstructing access to civil rights and identity documentation. Although Constitutional Court Decision No. 97/PUU-XIV/2016 facilitates registration for Penghayat Kepercayaan (including Samin) at civil offices (Dukcapil), implementation triggers cultural ambivalence: elders resist formalization on principle, while youth pragmatically seek legal recognition. This intergenerational negotiation reflects living law adapting under state formalism. The Samin case thus illuminates asymmetric legal pluralism in Indonesian family law.

Abstract

The phenomenon of the Qur’an completion ceremony featuring a parade of dancing horses, which has taken place in Balingasal Village from the 1980s to the present day, serves as both a religious ritual and a marker of the community’s identity. This study aims to explore the local tradition of dancing horses in the Qur’an completion ritual in Balingasal Village, Kebumen Regency. The focus of this research is to understand the symbolic meaning, implementation process, and social function of the tradition within the context of the village community’s religious life. Data for this study were obtained through interviews, observation, and literature review. The research findings indicate that the tradition of the dancing horse in the Qur’an completion ritual is an expression of local culture and a tool for cultural communication, demonstrating a harmonious integration of Islamic values and ancestral cultural heritage within the community of Balingasal Village, which is evolving alongside modernisation. This study offers insights into patterns of cultural innovation that can be adapted and replicated in cultural regions across the archipelago where religious practices remain strong.

Abstract

The jimpitan tradition, a community-based mutual assistance practice, continues to endure amid modernization. However, studies examining this tradition through the Living Qur’an perspective remain limited. Previous research has predominantly focused on its social, economic, and community empowerment dimensions, while the processes through which Qur’anic values are internalized, practiced, and transmitted have received little attention. This study aims to analyze the manifestation of Qur’anic values within the jimpitan tradition in Ganting Village, Gedangan District, Sidoarjo Regency, and to explain how Qur’anic teachings are internalized in community social practices. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach within the Living Qur’an framework. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, documentation, and literature review, and analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model, supported by NVivo software for thematic mapping through tree-map visualization. The findings reveal that the jimpitan tradition is routinely practiced through nightly collections of rice or monetary contributions, which are collectively managed for social and communal purposes. From the Living Qur’an perspective, this practice embodies the values of ta‘āwun (mutual assistance), ukhuwah (brotherhood), generosity, sincerity, social responsibility, and concern for vulnerable groups. These values correspond closely with Qur’anic teachings, particularly Q.S. Al-Mā’idah [5]:2, Q.S. Al-Hujurāt [49]:10, and Q.S. Al-Mā‘ūn [107]:1–3. The study’s novelty lies in interpreting jimpitan as a form of social reception of the Qur’an, demonstrating that Qur’anic teachings are not merely understood textually but are also embodied in local cultural practices. Theoretically, this study contributes to Living Qur’an scholarship by highlighting local traditions as effective media for transmitting and actualizing Qur’anic values in social life.
