Abstract

Papua and Chuseok from South Korea, within a global context, employing Clifford Geertz's theory of cultural symbolism. Bakar Batu is a deeply rooted culinary and communal ritual in Papua, bringing people together in a shared act of cooking that honors ancestral spirits and nature. In comparison, Chuseok is a Korean harvest festival that celebrates gratitude for the year's abundance and includes ancestral rites and communal sharing of traditional foods. This study uses a qualitative approach to examine the symbolic meanings embedded in these two traditions through literature review and thematic data analysis. The findings reveal that, despite the forces of globalization and modernization, both Bakar Batu and Chuseok uphold collective identity and spiritual values, illustrating Geertz's perspective that symbols embody culture and reinforce social unity and cultural continuity. Each tradition, while evolving, remains resilient in preserving its symbolic meaning, underscoring the global relevance of cultural rituals in affirming identity, fostering community solidarity, and transmitting spiritual values across generations. This study contributes to global discourses on cultural preservation, emphasizing the universal role of ritual in sustaining identity and social cohesion amidst diverse cultural landscapes.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the strengthening of religious moderation of students through religious tutorials at state universities to ward off radicalism. The research method uses a sequential design of mixed method explanation. Quantitative data was collected by random sampling with a sample of 809 people. Qualitative data was conducted by interviews using purposive sampling to a number of related parties, observation records, dan documentation studies. The average score of religious moderation after participating in tutorial activities was higher than the average score of religious moderation of students before participating in religious tutorial activities. This finding is supported by the results of a significant t-test (sig. 0.000). The dimension of religious moderation that experienced the largest increase was national commitment (4.29%), followed by accommodating to local culture (3.60%), non-violence (3.37%), dan tolerance (3.12%). This increase is influenced by the internalization of values dan examples from lecturers, tutors, dan fellow students. However, most students only showed a low increase in moderation due to having had a prior understanding of religion dan the constraints of the absence of tutors during mentoring. This research emphasizes the importance of the role of religious tutorials in shaping students' religious moderation attitudes.

Abstract

Traditional art is an irreplaceable heritage because it contains various noble values, identity markers, and means of connecting with the divine. However, maintaining this heritage is not easy so that it tends to be abandoned by its heirs. This study traces the reasons for maintaining traditional folk art in society by taking the case of Ebeg performing arts in Purbalingga Regency. This study analyzes the social interaction behind the preservation of Ebeg art using the theory of symbolic interactionism which looks at the meaning of symbols given by society to the art to influence its preservation. Data collection was carried out through observation, in-depth interviews, and document reviews, which were then analyzed hermeneutically. The results of the study revealed that Ebeg performing arts actually contain noble values aligned with religious education, such as faith, brotherhood, moderation, and patriotism. The inheritance of Ebeg art on the one hand has been supported by The Purbalingga Regency Government in the form of funding and various preservation initiatives. On the other hand, the inheritance of this art is hampered by the perception of illegality, assumptions of negative influences, lack of financial support from the public, poor public understanding, lack of human resources and infrastructure, as well as a decline in art lovers. The results of this study imply that traditional arts require more than government alone. More than that, the community that supports them must be aware of the importance of preserving cultural heritage. One effort to increase awareness is by the harmony between traditional arts and the noble values of religion, and this emphasizes the novelty of the article.

Abstract

The concepts of jihad, heresy, and Khilafah, as interpreted by transnational radical groups, have contributed to many conflicts in Indonesia. The objective of this article is to provide an in-depth examination of the strategies employed by the eight Rais Aam Syuriah and four General Chairmen of the Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) in countering radicalism in Indonesia. This article employs a qualitative approach and a literature review methodology. The article presents three findings. Firstly, the process of deradicalization through an intellectual approach is achieved through an understanding of religious knowledge from authoritative Islamic scholars, verified literature, and complex methods of legal extraction. This is employed to produce contextual legal fatwas, which serve as a solution to the textual legal fatwas of radical groups. Secondly, deradicalization through a cultural approach is conducted continuously to harmonize religion and culture through various approaches. The cultural approach represents a solution to the cultural resistance exhibited by radical groups. Thirdly, deradicalization through a constitutional approach is directed at educating for nationalism, Pancasila, the trilogy of brotherhood, and a critical review of the 1945 Constitution and its derivatives. The constitutional approach represents a solution to the radical movement that seeks to alter the fundamental tenets of the four pillars of nationalism in favor of their ideological framework.

Abstract

Classical religious manuscripts from the Nusantara region, dating from the 17th to the 19th centuries, represent a significant intellectual heritage, yet a comprehensive understanding of the scholarly publication trends and manuscript dissemination patterns within the global academic context remains limited. This study aims to (1) analyze global scholarly publication trends related to 17th-19th century Nusantara classical religious manuscripts, and (2) map the main contributors and collaboration networks in such studies. The research method employed is a quantitative bibliometric analysis of publication data sourced from the Scopus database, focusing on articles published between 1990 and 2024. The analysis of 200 articles reveals that the United States and the United Kingdom are the countries with the largest contributions in terms of publication numbers and citations, with the United States alone garnering over 1,200 citations. Furthermore, this research identifies dominant keywords such as “human,” “religion,” and “history” that frequently appear in the corpus of related articles. In conclusion, this study presents a comprehensive mapping of the landscape and trends in scholarly publications concerning Nusantara classical religious manuscripts, offering a significant contribution to the global understanding and preservation efforts of this valuable intellectual heritage and identifying potential areas for future research.

Abstract

The government’s efforts to promote religious moderation as a core societal value have been consistently pursued in recent years. However, the landscape of religious freedom in Indonesia continues to face significant challenges, with intolerance still surfacing in various forms. According to the Setara Institute’s 2024 report, there were 217 documented incidents in 2023 related to violations of freedom of religion and belief, totaling 329 individual acts. This study aims to explore the characteristics of socio-religious attitudes among students of public senior high school (SMAN) and students of state Islamic senior high school (MAN). The primary objective of this study is to examine the patterns of socio-religious attitudes among students attending both general and Islamic public senior secondary schools. Employing a quantitative research approach, the study seeks to obtain precise and representative measurements that closely reflect social realities. Statistical analysis is used to assess and compare students’ socio-religious attitudes across two distinct school types: public senior high schools (SMAN) and public Islamic senior high schools (MAN) in Jakarta. The normality test results revealed that the data did not conform to a normal distribution. Consequently, the analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney non-parametric test. The outcome indicated a significance level of 0.625, surpassing the conventional alpha threshold of 0.05. This finding suggests the absence of a statistically meaningful difference in socio-religious attitudes between students attending public senior high schools (SMAN) and those enrolled in public Islamic senior high schools (MAN). The results imply that students generally demonstrate a constructive and inclusive orientation towards matters related to religious belief, the institutionalization of religious law, and tolerance.

Abstract

Sufism, as a path for Muslims to draw closer to Allah, has shaped Islamic spirituality. In a broader sense, mysticism encompasses supernatural and transcendental aspects, potentially fostering peace through tolerance. This study aims to map the patterns and models of Sufistic research relevant to Indonesia by employing a bibliometric analysis of global research trends in Islamic mysticism. Utilizing the Scopus database with the search criteria "Islam AND Mysticism" for publications between 2014 and 2024, a total of 188 scientific documents were analyzed. While the initial dataset is global, this study focuses on identifying trends, authors, institutions, and thematic clusters that illuminate the landscape of Sufism studies concerning Indonesia. The findings reveal significant contributions from Indonesian authors and institutions, as well as thematic concentrations on historical and regional aspects like the "Sunda Islands," indicating specific "patterns" of Sufistic inquiry related to Indonesia. This research contributes by offering an overview of these patterns, thereby assisting in understanding the specific characteristics and developmental directions of Sufism studies in the Indonesian context.

Abstract

This study explores the implementation of qira’ah mubadalah in interpreting Qur’anic verses and Hadiths on family issues, and its contribution to gender-responsive public policy. The focus of this research is to explain how the principle of reciprocity (mubadalah) offers a new understanding of family issues. This is a library research employing a qualitative descriptive method with a philosophical approach. The findings show that in the perspective of qira’ah mubadalah, the rights and responsibilities of husbands and wives are placed equally, where family needs become a shared responsibility. Obedience between spouses must be based on mutual consent, not coercion. Both have equal obligations in childcare and education. Marital discord (nusyuz) should be resolved through advice, with divorce as a last, peaceful solution. The ‘iddah period functions as a time for reflection, reconciliation, and mourning, without approaching the opposite sex. The implementation of qira’ah mubadalah has contributed to public policy, such as the Ministry of Religious Affairs circular on prohibiting husbands from marrying during the wife’s ‘iddah, social assistance for female heads of households, use of the mother’s name on diplomas, and mandatory premarital counseling. This study highlights its relevance in achieving gender justice.

Abstract

In the early twentieth century, Traditionalist and Reformist Muslims in Indonesia often held conflicting views on religious traditions. However, the manuscript Ḥukm al-Nāqūs reveals a notable exception: in the case of the kentongan (wooden slit drum), both camps arrived at the same legal conclusion despite their divergent ideological frameworks. This study aims to examine the similarities and differences in istidlāl (legal reasoning) employed by the two groups in responding to religious rituals that have undergone acculturation with local culture, particularly the use of the kentongan as a call to prayer. Employing a qualitative, library-based research methodology, the study draws on the primary source of the Ḥukm al-Nāqūs fatwa manuscript, held in the Langitan Islamic Boarding School, Tuban, along with relevant secondary literature from early twentieth-century Islamic discourse. The research adopts a philological approach enriched by intertextual analysis, socio-intellectual history, and Islamic legal hermeneutics. The findings demonstrate that while Traditionalists anchor their legal reasoning in the authority of classical scholars, and Reformists prioritize direct reference to the Qur’an and Hadith, both may reach similar legal verdicts under specific conditions. This convergence suggests that ideological common ground can emerge when both traditions are oriented toward primary Islamic texts. The study contributes a novel analytical typology of fatwas through the lens of a single local manuscript, highlighting an unexpected legal convergence between two competing streams of Islamic thought in early twentieth-century Indonesia.

Abstract

The main encounter between education and religion is not merely the unity and integrity of the nation and its people, but also the habit of expressing different views among people of different faiths. This study aims to explore the encounter between religion and education in uniting different people in a multi-faith community on the slopes of Mount Merapi. This study uses a micro ethnographic case study approach, with data collected through interviews, observations, documentation, audio-video recordings, and focus group discussions (FGDs). Participants involved in the study include community members such as interfaith leaders, village officials, teachers, community learning center facilitators, farmers, and village residents. The findings of this study indicate that: 1) inclusive education that teaches tolerant values is evident in the interaction between families and the village community to accept and respect each other's different religious beliefs, yet they are given equal opportunities to practice their respective religious teachings; 2) Formal, non-formal, and informal education prioritizes the concept of tepo sliro while maintaining rogo, roso, and tresno in interfaith encounters for the purpose of creating a peaceful and harmonious society; and 3) The religious humanism model with a socio-cultural approach as a model of religious moderation that is practiced in the Lereng Merapi community.
