Abstract

The pulpit is considered the throne of God's glory because it becomes a tool for delivering God's Words or sermons from the perspective of The Protestant Church in the Moluccas (PCM). The Sermon in worship is considered sacred, so the pulpit is the centre of attention in the church buildings' arrangement. This paper aims to describe and identify the meaning of the forms of pulpits in the architectural layout of most GPM church buildings. This qualitative research uses three data collection methods, namely direct and digital observations, and literature reviews. The selected data will be discussed using descriptive analysis and content analysis methods. The discussion in this paper refers to three findings. First, historical evidence confirms that PCM is a traditional church. Second, the pulpit used as the centre in arranging the worship space always uses forms of local wisdom such as traditional Maluku musical instruments, essential flora and fauna that live with the Maluku community in certain areas, and the livelihoods of the Maluku community. Third, local wisdom used as a pulpit in Maluku shows an intensive dialogue between traditional values and colonial Christianity that remains sustainable even in this post-modern civilization. In principle, PCM, as one of the mainstream churches that have long existed in Indonesia, still uses local wisdom symbols to represent a dialogue between religion and local community traditions.

Abstract

In Indonesia, religious- and tradition-based healing methods are still widely practiced, especially in rural areas with strong attachments to religious values. The study focused on how religious leaders, through certain rituals, act as healing agents believed to be able to restore spiritual balance and mental health to patients. Using an anthropological approach, research was conducted at PRS Maunatul Mubarok, Demak, Central Java, a religious healing center. Data was obtained through in-depth interviews and first-hand observation of healing ritual practices. The results of the study show that healing rituals function not only as therapeutic efforts, but also as social mechanisms that strengthen community solidarity and instill hope for patients. Furthermore, these findings highlight the importance of cross-cultural understanding in mental health systems and the need to develop treatment approaches that integrate medical and religious aspects in a balanced manner. Religious leaders and ritual-based healing practices have a significant role to play in providing alternative treatment for mental disorders, especially in communities heavily influenced by tradition and religion.

Abstract

The Martahi Martulpak tradition in Mandailing society is a collective practice that reflects the value of mutual assistance in supporting the costs of organizing a wedding. Although it has been widely studied as part of local culture, limited research has linked this practice to the concept of living hadith, particularly to actualise Islamic values in a social context. This study aims to fill the theoretical gap regarding how the values of the hadith about ta'āwun (mutual assistance), ukhūwah (brotherhood), and alms are actualized in local cultural practices. Using descriptive qualitative methods and participatory observation techniques as well as in-depth interviews, this study explores the social and religious meaning of Martahi Martulpak for the Mandailing community. The study results show that Martahi Martulpak not only represents the socio-cultural values of Mandailing but also actualizes the teachings of the hadith in a local context. This tradition reflects the practice of collective alms and mutual assistance, where community participation is not only based on social obligations but is also interpreted as worship. This participation strengthens the bonds of brotherhood, strengthens the social structure, and expands the meaning of hadith in the social realm. Thus, Martahi Martulpak becomes a reflection of the living hadith, which is dynamic, adaptive, and contextual in forming the social and spiritual norms of the Mandailing community.

Abstract

In the digital era, the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed how people understand and practice religion, creating new opportunities while posing significant challenges to cultural diversity and spiritual values. Using a Systematic Literature Review, this study examines how language and AI reshape religious practices, focusing on their impact on the cross-linguistic interpretation of religious texts, the transformation of communication patterns between congregants and spiritual authorities, and the personalization of religious messages and its implications for pluralism. The findings reveal that AI enhances accessibility to religious texts through automated translation and language-based algorithms while presenting challenges such as algorithmic bias, homogenization of interpretations, and risks to cultural diversity. Homogenization of interpretations refers to the tendency of AI systems to simplify or prioritize dominant theological perspectives, potentially marginalizing alternative or minority interpretations that contribute to the richness of religious traditions. Additionally, AI-powered virtual assistants alter communication patterns with spiritual authorities, and message personalization, defined here as the algorithmic tailoring of religious content to an individual’s digital behavior, preferences, or consumption history, tends to create information isolation that may hinder interfaith dialogue. This study emphasizes the need for ethical and inclusive approaches to AI development to preserve cultural and theological diversity.

Abstract

Pesantren, as a central institution of Islamic education in Indonesia. These institutions face contemporary challenges, particularly the demand to redefine the relationship between humans and nature and to reinterpret the role of humans as khalifah on earth. The era of posthumanism invites the present generation to critique anthropocentrism, and ecotheology offers a theological perspective on the sustainability of non-human life. This study seeks to portray the discourses and practices in responding to these two perspectives through case studies in several pesantren in Wonosobo. The findings show that, indirectly, whether consciously realized or not, pesantren have practiced and articulated the role of human–nature relations. An understanding of balance between the two has been embedded in teachings, learning processes, and practices. However, these good practices have not yet been implemented optimally. Various obstacles and challenges remain, including the lack of synergy in the learning curriculum, the economic capacity of pesantren, and the formation of parents’ perceptions that remain focused on the core objective of pesantren, which targets students to become experts solely in religious fields, while neglecting or being less receptive to other forms of development. Nevertheless, pesantren communities are not unprepared to face contemporary challenges, as they are shaped and facilitated by skills and direct practices in addition to learning from books and classical texts.

Abstract

This paper examines religious tolerance and moderation in the cities of Singkawang and Salatiga through  cultural perspective. Studies on religious moderation in Indonesia generally focus on regulatory, educational, or theological-normative dimensions. This research offers a new perspective by analyzing religious moderation culturally, emphasizing the role of culture, particularly religious rituals, as instruments of dialogue and collaborative work. This qualitative field research uses functionalism theory to analyze ongoing socio-cultural phenomena, with analytical parameters covering three aspects. First, the aspect of understanding religious texts; second, the role of Muslim religious leaders; and third, ritual/traditional practices. The research findings reveal three main points. First, the interpretations of Muslim leaders in both cities confirm that the values of tolerance, equality, and peaceful coexistence derived from the Qur'an or Hadith remain the foundational principles in responding to the dynamics of a pluralistic society. Second, the experiences of both cities show that moderation grows through responsive leadership, coordinated institutional mediation mechanisms, and interfaith community participation, thereby it forms an ecosystem of tolerance that does not arise spontaneously, but is designed, structured, and sustainable. Third, religious and cultural rituals provide a social space that allows the growth of mutual trust, cooperation, and social cohesion. This research shows that religious moderation is not merely the result of normative teachings, but a practice of living together that is formed through synergy between religious authorities, social leadership, and cultural rituals, which collectively create a more inclusive and resilient pluralistic society against potential conflicts.

Abstract

This study examines the function of symbolism in the Tonu Wujo Nogo Ema legend in relation to the spiritual and social practices of the Lewolema community in East Flores Regency. The focus of this study is how this symbolism influences agricultural activities and the community's relationship with nature and God. A qualitative approach using ethnographic methods was used. Data was collected through interviews, participatory observation, and documentation. Informants were selected using purposive sampling techniques and consisted of traditional leaders, religious leaders, and young people involved in the social and ritual life of the community. Data analysis was conducted using a thematic and ethnographic approach to interpret the symbolism in the legend and its influence on the community's relationship with nature and the divine. This study shows that the Tonu Wujo Nogo Ema legend functions as a religious symbol that is manifested in daily agricultural practices, such as prayers at ceremonies before farming, during plant care, and at harvest time. This shows the connection between humans and the transcendent and immanent forces known as Rera Wulan Tanah Ekan. These results contribute to the study of religious anthropology and highlight how local symbolism shapes social and spiritual practices and their interaction with major religions such as Catholicism. The limitations of this study lie in its focus on the Lewolema community only and the lack of analysis of the impact of social change and modernity.

Abstract

The emergence of intolerance, social fragmentation and religiously driven violence over the last two decades demonstrates how the growing intricacy of religious variety and the inability of religious conflicts to subside in the 21st century has augmented scholarly debate on religious tolerance and interreligious dialogue as a tool of peaceful coexistence. Despite the increased pace in the development of research in this area, there is no full understanding of the trends in global research, the actors that contributed to it and the trends in its focusing. The purpose of this research is to map the trends and key actors in the research and networking of Religious Tolerance and Interfaith Dialogue all over the world in the period between 2000 and 2025. The research uses bibliometric review as a methodology and includes English-language journal articles that are available in the Scopus database. VOSviewer was used to analyze the bibliographic relationships between countries, institutions, journals, authors, publications and the co-occurrence of key words with network, overlay and density visualization to analyze 2,294 articles. The findings indicate a major growth in academic publication, especially following 2015 with 2023 being the highest point. The United States and the United Kingdom come out as the most influential contributors and Indonesia is a notable and emerging contributor in the Global South. Georgetown University and Harvard University are recognized as best institutions and Religions is the most fruitful journal. The analysis of the key word reveals that there are four broad thematic categories, including diversity and spirituality, socio-political and human rights aspects, contextual studies that involve Indonesia and theological-comparative studies. To summarize, the current paper has shown that a bibliometric review exposes the strategic information regarding the intellectual framework and emerging emphasis of interfaith research in favor of evidence-based academic research and policy formulation to enhance religious tolerance in the multicultural communities.

Abstract

The digital transformation has reshaped how digital-native university students experience religious life. This study examines how Muslim students in Indonesia engage with, interpret, and negotiate their religious practices in digital spaces. Using a qualitative digital survey design with narrative prompts, data were collected between April 15 and May 1, 2025 through an online narrative-style questionnaire completed by 84 Muslim students from STAI Al-Anwar Sarang Rembang, an Islamic college rooted in the pesantren tradition. Thematic analysis was employed to identify key patterns in spiritual transformation, online community participation, and the dynamics of authority and affect in digital religiosity. Findings indicate that digital media not only facilitates access to Islamic knowledge but also structures new patterns of hybrid worship and emotional engagement. Students demonstrate reflective agency in filtering online religious content and building virtual connections with fellow Muslims across diverse regions, while also facing challenges such as authority confusion, polarized viewpoints, and religious anxiety triggered by online exposure. The study concludes that the digital realm functions as an alternative and complementary arena for religious life among students and underscores the urgent need for critical, inclusive, and context-sensitive religious digital literacy to guide spiritual development in an increasingly mediatized society.
