Abstract

Hematite (Fe2O3) was successfully extracted from the Aceh iron ore mineral by precipitation method with employing sulphuricacid (H2SO4) as chemical agent.  Furthermore, the extracted hematite was modified with sodium metal (K), namely it doped with NaOH of 5% and 10% (w/w), respectively. Based on the characterization results using XRD and SEM- EDS proved that modified catalyst (Na2O/Fe2O3) with their homogeneous size were resulted while the hematite (Fe2O3) particles was dopped withNaOH at its low concentration of (5% wt/wt), however while doping with the higher concentration of NaOH (10% w/w), agglomeration was taken place among the catalyst particles in which decreasing the surface area of the modified catalysts. Finally, the modified catalyst (Na2O/Fe2O3) was successfully applied as an inorganic catalyst on transesterification of coconut oil and methanol (T = 55 – 60oC, 2 h)for forming methyl esters asbiodiesel compounds.

Abstract

Earthquakes and tsunamis natural disasters have repeatedly occurred on the coast of Aceh province, which lies between the confluence of two plates. The tsunami deposits in this area can provide important information regarding the reconstruction of marine attacks by past earthquakes and tsunamis. In general, tsunami deposits can be identified based on their geological, sedimentological, paleontological, and geochemical characteristics. In our research work, spectrometry X-ray fluorescence (XRF) has been utilized to investigate the geochemical signatures of tsunami-affected soil samples in Aceh province at three tsunami-impacted areas, namely Aceh Besar regency, Banda Aceh City, and Aceh Barat regency. The sampling point is located about a kilometer from the coastal line. Our findings indicate that tsunami-affected soils in Aceh Province after 10 years struck by tsunami contain terrestrial markers such as Fe and Ti, carbonate markers (Mg, Ca), and heavy metals elements (Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Sr). On the other hand, in our study, the concentration ratios of several elements such as Si/Ti and Ca/Ti seem most suitable as a chemical signature for differentiating environmental conditions such as the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami event. It could be noticed that geochemical analysis by XRF can be applied to characterize the tsunami-affected soils in several coastal areas of Aceh province.

Abstract

Pinus Jantho Forest (PJF) Nature Reserve has unique characteristics and distinctive ecosystem that plays an important role in the preservation of germplasm and the protection of natural resources. The sustainability of the PJF Nature Reserve is strongly determined by vegetation of its constituents. Therefore, an effort is needed to help its management properly, one of which is by knowing the diversity of plants that make up the community in PJF Nature Reserve. The purpose of this research is to analyze the composition and diversity of plant species in PJF Nature Reserve. Data collection and sampling were done using multiple square method. The plots were laid out by systematic sampling. PJF Nature Reserve composed of 111 species from 46 family. The seedling and understorey have the highest number individuals (1028 in total). Then there are 240 individuals at sapling level, 108 individuals at pole, and 72 individuals for tree.  The Euphorbiaceae family has the largest number of species (11 species). The highest Important Value Index (IVI) for seedlings and understorey, sapling and pole, and tree respectively were Chloranthus elatior (11.09%), Piper aduncum (21.90% and 19.32%), and Pinus merkusii (25.52%). The Diversity Index indicates a high level of plant species diversity (3.25-3.63).

Abstract

Abstract. Climate change is a global phenomenon that currently and seriously impacts the environment. Increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases have caused changes in extreme climate events. We have studied index rainfall extream trend at two meteorological stations of Sultan Iskandar Muda in Banda Aceh and Cut Nyak Dien in Meulaboh from 1982-2013. Daily rainfall data were processed using software of RClimDex to obtain the extreme rainfall index. Such indexes are extreme climate index set by the expert team for Climate Change Detection Monitoring and Indices (ETCCDMI) including of maximum 1-day and 5-days precipitation amount (RX1day and RX5day), total annual precipitation (PRCPTOT), consecutive dry days (CDD), consecutive wet days (CWD), very wet days (R95p), extremely wet days (R99p) and heavy precipitation days (R20mm). Based on our study, we found that the PRCPTOT tend to decrease, whereas occurances of RX1day and RX5day increase. The Banda Aceh station which has a monsoonal pattern is charaterized by increasing in R95p and R99p as well as but decreasing in R20mm. The CWD and CDD tend to accumulate at once. The Meulaboh station that has the type of equatorial rain show decreasing trend in R95p and R99p, but increasing trend in R20mm. The CWD and CDD occur within some days. The projection Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) 4.5 and 8.5 from 2014-2050 showed an increasing pattern frequency of rain in Banda Aceh and a decreasing pattern in Meulaboh. Keywords: Trend, Extream Climate Index, ProjectionREFERENCE Lutgens. Abstract

. One of the crucial issues in data mining is to select an appropriate classification algorithm. Due to it usually involves many criteria, the duty of algorithm selection can be widely described as multiple-attribute decision-making (MADM) problems, including credit risk evaluation. Many different MADM approaches select classifiers based on different perspectives, and hence they might generate diverse classifiers' rankings. This paper aims to propose a hybrid intelligent model to overcome credit risk assessment problems based on logistic regression and the fuzzy MADM method. Firstly, the Ordinal Priority Approach (OPA) method evaluates attributes involved in credit risk problems by considering professional assessments of a decision-maker and calculates a weight for each criterion. Secondly, all categorical data converted into triangular-fuzzy numbers (TFNs) and numerical data are evaluated using the MADM instrument to obtain an optimal solution dataset and logistic regression to calculate the probabilities of the optimal dataset. In this experimental study, three existing classification techniques and the proposed intelligent model evaluate three banking credit datasets with a different number of criteria under numerical and categorical data types. The prediction accuracy results generated by the proposed model are compared with the three existing classification methods. The results exhibit that there are slight differences between the three datasets. The experimental results demonstrate the proposed intelligent model has superiority in classifying the credit loan recipients especially for categorical datasets.

Abstract

Printed newspaper is one of the print-based media published daily in large quantities. The focus of this research is to remove the ink from used newsprint with alkaline treatment by using ultrasound sonochemistry method. Newsprint sheets collected were characterized by mechanical and morphology tests using FT-IR, XRD, tensile test and SEM. FT-IR spectra analysis shows the absorption of C=C functional groups as the main components of newspapers at 1427 and 1635 cm-1 wavelengths. The treatment with alkaline solution increased the mechanical strength properties of paper. SEM morphology analysis result shows that the surface of paper becomes more rough after ultrasound-alkaline treatment compared to paper without ultrasound treatment (conventional treatment). The crystallinity value decreased with alkaline treatment. The longer the ultrasound duration was, the lower the crystallinity degree became.

Abstract

A taxonomic key based on soldier and worker characters for an open air processional column termites genera, Lacessititermes, was constructed from material collected from Sumatra and adjacent islands from 1998 to 2017. As many as seven species of the genus are taxonomically difficult and complicated. Soldier caste is efective to separate L. piliferus, L. longinsus, L. albipes and L. batavus while mandible characters are efective to separate L. laborator from L. sordidus. Combination of soldier and worker characters are highly useful for identification of Lacessititermes from Sumatra. Keywords: Termite, Lacessititermes, Taxonomy, Sumatra
