Abstract

Regional expansion can be one option that has the potential to reduce inequality in a region. This study was conducted with the aim of analyzing changes in inequality in the province of East Java if it did not undergo and underwent regional expansion based on the discourse of regional expansion. The study used the period from 2010 to 2023. This study uses a quantitative approach. The data used in this study are secondary data sourced from the Central Statistics Agency of East Java Province (BPS). This data was processed using Theil Index analysis. The results of the study indicate that the inequality occurring in all districts/cities undergoes changes if regional expansion occurs, particularly in the expanded regions compared to those that did not undergo regional expansion. The conclusion of this study is that regional expansion can be a solution to reduce and address inequality between regions. Therefore, policies that can enhance economic growth in a region should be implemented to reduce inequality between regions.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of education and health on the Human Development Index (HDI) in East Java Province during the period 2020–2024. The problem addressed in this research is the disparity of HDI achievements across regions, particularly between the mainland and Madura Island, which reflects unequal access to education and health services. The research method employed was quantitative with panel data regression using a natural logarithm transformation, estimated through IBM SPSS 25. The findings reveal that education has a positive and significant effect on HDI, confirming its fundamental role in improving human development, while health, measured through health complaints, shows a positive but insignificant effect. Simultaneously, education and health together explain 50.4% of HDI variation, with the remaining 49.6% influenced by other factors not included in the model. These results suggest that strengthening access and quality of education should be prioritized to accelerate HDI improvement, while health indicators require further refinement to better capture the real condition of society.

Abstract

Poverty is a complex and multidimensional problem. This is due to its interconnectedness with various aspects, including social, economic, cultural, and other aspects. East Java as the second most populous region in Indonesia faces poverty issues. This study aims to analyze the level of poverty disparity between districts/cities in East Java Province for the period 2015–2024 using the Williamson Index approach. The data used are the percentage of the poor population and the total population from the official publication of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS). The research method used is descriptive quantitative with the calculation of the Williamson Index to measure inequality between regions. The results show that the value of the Williamson Index for East Java is in the range of 0.38–0.41, which is categorized as moderate inequality. This increase indicates that poverty reduction is not fully evenly distributed across the province, especially between urban areas such as Surabaya, Sidoarjo, and Malang which have advanced economic sectors and rural areas such as Madura and Tapal Kuda which are still structurally lagging.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of fiscal policy in reducing poverty in Eastern Indonesia, both directly and indirectly through health and education spending and economic growth. In this context, fiscal policy is measured through local own-source revenue, transfer funds, and regional borrowing, used for funding the health and education spending. Meanwhile, the dependent variable will be proxied by the percentage of poor people (P0). Pandemic will also included in the analysis as control variable. Regression with the Three-Stage Least Square (3SLS) method will be employed in this study, incorporating twelve provinces from 2010 to 2023, with a fixed effect model estimation. After conducting robustness checks, this paper reveals that regional incomes, measured by local own-source revenue, transfer funds, and government borrowing have significantly affected poverty, either directly or indirectly through education and health spending and economic growth channel. It means that those variables can play a significant role in mitigating poverty in Eastern Indonesia. Therefore, policies aimed at enhancing regional income, optimizing fund transfer, and prioritizing the allocation of expenditures and borrowing on developments that broadly benefit the Poor, are crucial for accelerating poverty reduction in Eastern Indonesia.

Abstract

The Universal Health Protection Program (Jamkesta) in Gorontalo Province aims to expand healthcare access for low-income households, yet its utilization remains uneven across demographic groups. This study examines the factors influencing the use of Jamkesta healthcare services among households seeking care at dr. Ainun Habibie Hospital. Using a quantitative explanatory design with 200 respondents, the study employs a logistic regression model to assess the roles of predisposing, enabling, and need factors in shaping healthcare utilization. The results indicate that age, access to village-level health facilities, and membership in community organizations significantly influence the likelihood of using Jamkesta services. In contrast, gender, educational attainment, employment status, and household size do not show significant effects. These findings highlight the importance of accessibility and social networks in driving healthcare utilization, suggesting the need for strengthened health literacy, equitable information dissemination, and improved service quality to ensure that Jamkesta functions effectively as an inclusive public health protection mechanism.

Abstract

This study analyzes the factors that influence income exploitation among child workers in Indonesia using secondary data from the August 2022 National Labor Force Survey (Sakernas). A quantitative approach and binary logistic regression were applied to test the influence of variables such as regional classification, gender, age, educational status, working hours, and type of work on the likelihood of income exploitation. The results of the analysis show that gender has a significant effect, with female child workers 0.46 times more likely to be exploited than male child workers. Age also has a significant effect, with younger child workers 0.87 times more likely to experience exploitation than older child workers. Child workers who work more than 40 hours per week are 1.65 times more likely to be exploited than those who work ≤ 40 hours per week. In addition, child workers in the informal sector are 2.46 times more likely to be exploited than those in the formal sector. Meanwhile, regional classification and educational status do not have a significant effect on the level of income exploitation of child workers in Indonesia

Abstract

Crime in East Java Province is influenced by security policies, social interventions, and regional economic conditions; therefore, an empirical analysis is required to determine the influence of each factor. This study aims to analyze the effect of regional government expenditure on public order and security, the distribution of social assistance, and the level of community welfare on crime rates in East Java Province during the period 2019–2023. This research employs a quantitative approach using secondary data obtained from the Central Statistics Agency and the Directorate General of Fiscal Balance of the Ministry of Finance. The analytical method used is panel data regression with a Fixed Effect Model (FEM), processed using EViews 13 software. The results show that government expenditure on public order and security has a negative and significant effect on crime rates, while social assistance distribution and the level of community welfare have positive and significant effects. Simultaneously, all three variables have a significant effect on crime rates in East Java Province during 2019–2023.

Abstract

Income inequality in East Kalimantan Province remains an issue of concern despite the region’s improving economic growth during the period 2014–2023. The increase in Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP), largely driven by the mining and oil and gas sectors, has not resulted in an equitable distribution of income across regions. This study aims to analyze the effects of government expenditure on the economic, education, and social protection functions, as well as GRDP, on income inequality at the district and city levels in East Kalimantan Province. The method employed is panel data regression, with model selection conducted using the Chow test, Hausman test, and Lagrange Multiplier test. The results indicate that government expenditure on the economic function significantly reduces income inequality, while expenditure on the education and social protection functions shows a positive and significant association with income inequality. GRDP has a positive effect on income inequality, supporting the view that economic growth in its early stages tends to increase disparities. Simultaneously, all independent variables are found to have a significant effect on income inequality. These findings highlight the importance of improving the effectiveness of public spending and implementing more inclusive fiscal policies to promote a more equitable distribution of welfare in East Kalimantan Province.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract This study examines how the amount of visitors, lodging options, tourism attractions, and local taxes affect Bali Province's local income between 2014 and 2024. The findings, which are based on panel data and a fixed effect model (FEM), indicate that municipal taxes and tourist attractions have a considerable positive impact on local revenue, whereas the quantity of visitors and hotel accommodations have a positive but negligible impact. These results show that efficient administration of tourist attractions and local taxes has a greater impact on a rise in local revenue.
