Abstract

For clinical reasons, and in order to control minimise the effects on the health of individuals exposed to toxic elements, it is most important to monitor concentrations of trace elements in biological materials. Such an examination was achieved for urine samples of workers with different occupations and of different ages. Concentrations of lead, chromium and cobalt were examined in forty urine samples using the flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (F-AAS) technique. The average concentrations of Co, Cr and Pb were 0.0069 to 0.0484 ppm, 0.1056 to 0.9645 ppm and 0.1188 to 0.5067 ppm, respectively. A low detection limit for Co was registered compared to the Pb and Cr. This study has shown that Cr concentrations in the urine samples of people who work in oil refineries were higher than for people working in other vocations.  Concentrations of trace Co, Cr and Pb in the urine of people aged 30-40 years were larger than the concentration found for individuals in other age groups. The T-test, F-test and ANOVA have been used to examine the accuracy and precision of results and compare them with those published in the literature (literature review results). Keywords: Lead, Chromium, Cobalt, Urine, FAAS.

Abstract

Objectives: The aim of this study is to elucidate the effect  of  Activin A, Fibrillin-3, and Follistatin hormones on the oocytes  number and quality ,embryonic development, and pregnancy  rate (PR) following intra cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) cycle. Subject, Materials and Methods: Two hundred women undergoing ICSI treatment were chosen randomly. Controlled ovarian stimulation was done with two different protocols. Measurements of Activin A (pg/ml), Fibrillin-3 (ng/ml) and Follistatin (ng/ml) were assessed in serum and follicular fluid on the day of ovum pick up. Intra cytoplasmic sperm injection was performed and the oocyte and embryonic development were evaluated and determined in relation to the levels of these hormones. Results: There was a significant difference between number of MII oocytes and high quality embryos (G1) in pregnant women than that of non-pregnant women. The follistatin follicular fluid (FF) is the only hormone level which has a significant relation with total oocytes and good MII oocytes. Both the mid-cycle level in serum and follicular fluid of activin-A show a negative correlation of around -0.2 with the total number of embryos and the number of G1 embryos. For both Activin A and Fibrillin-3, there was a high or relatively high correlation within the pregnant subject and low till very low correlation in the non-pregnant subjects, independent of the stimulation protocol. Conclusions: The Follistatin FF has a significant correlation with good MII oocytes that could be used as a predictor for successful ICSI outcome. Keywords: Activin A, Follistatin, Fibrillin-3, ICSI, Controlled ovarian stimulation, Metaphase II oocytes, Embryos.

Abstract

Insulin is an essential hormone and has been the cornerstone in the therapy of Diabetes Mellitus. This case highlights insulin-induced hypertension in a type 2 DM patient, managed adequately with empagliflozin. A 60-year female with Diabetic Nephropathy & Hypothyroidism presented with elevated blood pressure after a week of insulin administration. An elevation in the patient’s blood pressure corresponding to the administration of insulin was observed. De-challenge and re-challenge of insulin with dose adjustment, resulted in sudden spike & decrease of blood pressure, thereby pointing a suspicion towards a relation between insulin and hypertension. Discontinuation of insulin and replacement with oral hypoglycemics has resulted in controlled blood pressure levels.

Abstract

A new composite of polyester reinforced by micro-hyper-woven glass and carbon fibers has been prepared to obtain unique mechanical and thermal properties and physicochemical activity such as high specific strength, stiffness and corrosive resistance to different hydrocarbon derivatives. In this experimental work, an attempt has been made to test the aging of new hyper composites in terms of their thermo mechanical properties by changing the weight percent, Cw/gw, of the additive woven mixed fiber in the range of (1, 2, 3). This new composite is fabricated by manually layering the base polyester matrix and reinforced hyper woven fibers 200/20 (gm/gm) from the base matrix, and a hardener is applied for each cast with 1 gm of micro-zirconium. Different aging results of the thermo mechanical properties (thermal conductivity, thermal expansion, impact strength, flexural strength, tensile strength, elongation, hardness, and compression resistance) are obtained according to the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards. The results for these aging thermo mechanical properties after one month show that the specimens reinforced by hyper woven gw/Cw with three percentage mixing ratios (1, 2, 3 wt.%) have excellent aging thermo mechanical properties. Keywords: Hyper woven fiber, Polyester composite, Aging characteristic properties.
