Abstract

Fish is highly perishable, and is spoiled rapidly if improperly handled. Salted dried, one of the techniques for preserving fish has been practiced for long period and it is an alternative to lowering the water activity of flesh fish. Snakehead fish (Channa striata) is a potential freshwater fish species and has become an important commodity in health food industry due to its abundant albumin content. The snakehead fish has commercial value due to its health benefit. It is a good source of medicinal food because it contains high level of amino acids and fatty acids. Therefore we conducted several experiments to identify the effect of salt soaking time, salt soaking concentration, dry temperature and stability of the dried snakehead fish filler by prerservation time. Our results showed that the best quality of the dried snakehead fish fillet could be obtained if the dried snakehead fish fillet treated with 1.0% salt in 1.5 hours and drying at 60oC to 20% moisture content. This application could preserve the dried snakehead fish fillet for 12 months in PA bag without any deterioration. Through this investigation, the added value of snakehead fish could be improved in domestic consumption. Keywords: Snakehead fish, Fillet, Salinity, Drying, Soaking, Preservation

Abstract

Approximately 60% of the world’s population is infected with intestinal parasites. Entamoeba histolytica constitutes one of the commonest protozoal infections in world, and it is estimated to infect 50 million cases of invasive amebiasis, and about 100,000 deaths and probably represent the third leading parasitic cause of death, behind only malaria and schistosomiasis. Oral inoculation of mice with (1*103 cell/0.1ml) cysts of E. histolytica isolated from the feces of 170 patients with amoebasis in Ibn Al-balady hospital, AL-Kindi Teaching hospital and Fatima Al-Zahraa hospital in Iraq resulted in an infection between (2-3) days after inoculation with the parasite .Among all the infected mice as shown by the presence of trophozoites in the large intestine and colon. Many histological abnormalities in the large intestine and the liver were detected in experimentally infected mice with Entamoeba histolytica. These abnormalities as necrosis, severe hemorrhage, increased in numbers of goblet cells, congested blood vessels. High level of IL-6 and IL-4 in the positive group compare with the negative group and the groups that treated with flagel and the group that treat with shrimp extracted proteins. Keywords: Entamoeba histolytica, Shrimp extracted proteins, IL-4, IL-6, Histopathology study.

Abstract

Modern health care has a set of problems. Our native medicine is in great need in the socially oriented help to different groups of the population of the country. One of socially unprotected groups is hard of hearing persons. The special social status does this contingent of the population especially vulnerable in the questions of stomatologic education. It involves the low level of hygienic stomatologic knowledge, and also insufficient motivation to preservation and promotion of an oral cavity health. In Russia there aren't enough researches devoted to the appreciation of the preventive stomatologic help level and to the specified contingent’s needs in it. Creation of the program of prevention of stomatologic diseases of hard of hearing persons is one of the important problems of stomatology. It is available for their specific world’s perception. Relevance is caused by the high level of distribution of stomatologic pathologies among hard of hearing persons of Penza region. Abstract

The scarcity of cadaver donation nowadays, consequently, the availability of fresh specimens will be drastically diminished. Plastinated specimens have been introduced as a supplement but are still not widely used in Malaysia.  This study aims to assess the knowledge on plastinated specimens and to determine the perception of preclinical medical students of UniKL RCMP about the use of plastinated specimen in studying anatomy.  A cross-sectional study was done on 143 preclinical medical students of UniKL RCMP using a simple random sampling method. A structured, self-administered questionnaire was used to collect socio-demographic data and information regarding perception on the use of plastinated specimen.  No significant association was found between gender and level of perception (p=0.458) although male students had a slightly better perception level than female students.  Regarding the relationship between gender and perception score, the mean of perception score was found to be higher in male than in female students but the mean difference was found to be statistically not significant (p=0.427).  Study on the association between year of study and the level of perception showed that the number of Year-II students with good perception was higher than that of Year-I students (p=0.006). On testing the relationship between year of study and perception score, the mean of perception score of Year-II students was found to be higher than Year-I students with the mean difference of 2.068 (p=0.002). Since the perception score toward the use of plastinated specimen for learning of anatomy was only an average among the preclinical MBBS students of UniKL RCMP and the Year-II students were having a better perception than the Year-I students, more frequent and longer exposure to the usage of plastinated specimens in learning anatomy should be encouraged. The increasing difficulty of obtaining donated cadavers experienced in many parts of the world propagated the use of plastinated specimens as a supplementary educational tool will open a new era in the teaching and learning of anatomy.KEYWORDS: Perception, Anatomy Learning, Preclinical Medical Students, UNIKL RCMP, Malaysia.

Abstract

Bacterial conjugations represent one of possibilities that transform bacteria. This study aimed to detect the occurrence of conjugation between two genera of bacteria includes wild strain A.tumefaciens (Atmco1), standard strain A. tumefaciens (C58Cl) and Sinorhizobiummeliloti. The results proved the conjugation through the sensitivity of those bacteria to specific antibiotics. The obtained data reported the stimulation of bacteria growth when they exposed to different ultrasound treatments. These ultrasound treatments include five period (0.0, 240, 480, 720 and 900) second for (47.6) KHZ. The treatments (240, 480) s increase colonies numbers between 25-72% when bacteria grown on the surface of the specific solid medium. The interesting results of this study are that the exposures of the conjugation mixture to the ultrasound treatment increase the Trans conjugant colonies between (23-80) % and increase the conjugation frequency twice. This may be probably as akey to enhance conjugation between those of bacteria species which are not able to conjugation.

Abstract

The bioactive properties and therapeutic importance for kefir grains encourage us to study the optimum culture conditions for maximum propagation and production. The kefir grains were cultured at different change conditions included (type of culture media, temperature, incubation time, and agitation speed). Additionally, the antagonistic activity for kefir was evaluated  against four pathogenic bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus , Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Esherichia coli O157 and  Klebsila penumonia) in two different methods ;First, the antibacterial activity was estimated by using kefir grains and  measuring the inhibition zone of growth .Second , the antibacterial activity was estimated by using the kefir whey  (fermented milk supernatant )after clarification process . The results showed The optimum culture condition  were achieved  by using the skim milk as culture media , incubation at 37 ◦C , for 24 h at static condition , these conditions lead to increase the growth rate to about  55.6% (70.1 gm/L), while the using of culture media supplemented with 5% glucose ,1% lactose and 5% yeast extract , the growth rates were (45.8 %, 41.3 % and 2. 2 %) respectively ,with biomass about (65.6 , 63.4 and 46 gm/L) respectively , in general ,these supplement lead to reduce the  rate of kefir grain biomass. The result of antibacterial activity of kefir grain revealed the highest inhibition zone was 4.05 cm for S.aureus, 3.55 cm for both S. saprophyticus and K. penumonia while the least inhibition zone was 2.9 cm for E. coli O157 strain, whereas the antagonistic activity of kefir whey     showed the inhibition rates were 86.6 %  for S. aureus, 90.7% for both S. saprophyticus and K. penumonia and 89.6 % for E. coli O157 strain . We concluded from this study the optimization of growth environment is very important for achieving the maximum production of kefir grains biomass and the kefir grain evaluated had high antagonistic activity toward the pathogens .This indicate potential using these grains as functional food. Keywords: Kefir grain; Culture conditions; Biomass; Antagonism; whey; Pathogenic bacteria.

Abstract

Fermentation is a relatively efficient, low energy preservation process which increases the shelf life, and decreases the need for refrigeration or other forms of food preservation technology. It is, therefore, a highly appropriate technique for use in developing countries and remote areas where access to sophisticated equipment is limited. Rhodomyrtus tomentosa plays an important holistic role in the daily lives of several ancient cultures, providing medicinal benefits. There is limited study mentioning to processing of this nutritional fruit. Therefore we explored a wine fermentation from Rhodomyrtus tomentosa by focusing on the effect of different parameters such as pectinase concentration and time of treatment for juice extraction, yeast inculate for wine fermentation, fermentation temperature and secondary fermentation to wine quality. Our results proved that 2.5% pectinase was used for juice extraction in 40 minutes, 2.5% sacchromyces cerevisiae was used for the main fermentation at 29.5oC in 15 days, and 6 weeks of aging in dark bottle at 10.5oC was enough to get a pleasant Rhodomyrtus tomentosa quality. Using Rhodomyrtus tomentosa having medicinal and nutritional value as a substrate for wine production, the health benefits of them can be improved widely. Keywords: Rhodomyrtus tomentosa, Wine, Pectinase, Fermentation, Sacchromyces cerevisiae, Aging.

Abstract

Background: Regional anesthesia reduces the inflammatory response and surgery-related immunosuppressive response. The scalp nerve block technique is a relatively simple and safe technique. The goal of this study was to compare the inflammatory response between a combination of general anesthesia and scalp nerve block compared with general anesthesia in craniotomy surgery. Methods: This was a double-blind, randomized controlled trial with pre and post-test study in 50 subjects carried out at Sanglah General Hospital (Bali, Indonesia). Group A treated with scalp nerve block using 0.25% levobupivacaine solution, and group B treated with scalp nerve block using 0.9% NaCl solution. Blood tests were carried out before and after the surgery to measure platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and C-reactive protein (CRP) as inflammatory markers. Results: The mean difference of PLR, NLR, and CRP between the two groups were significantly different (p <0.001) at 72 hours after the surgery. The tests found no significant difference at before and right after the surgery (p >0.05). Conclusion: The application of scalp nerve block in combination to general anesthesia lower the increase of PLR, NLR, and CRP compared to general anesthesia alone in craniotomy surgeries. Keywords: PLR, NLR, CRP, Inflammation, Regional anesthesia.
