Abstract

This study investigated the semantic functions of English prefixation in Anica Mrose Rissi’s novel Always Forever Maybe. It employed a qualitative descriptive approach and analyzed five prefixed lexical items (rename, disintegrate, overblown, Outbid, and unintelligible) to examine how prefixation contributed to emotional tone, character development, and thematic depth. Data were gathered through close reading and were analysed morphologically using the frameworks of Katamba (1993) and Lieber (2009). In addition, the data were analysed by using a combination of labelled analysis, bracketing, and tree diagram techniques. The findings revealed that prefixes functioned as semantic modifiers without altering the grammatical class of the base words. They fulfilled conceptual roles such as reversal, directionality, intensity, and spatial relation. Unlike previous studies that addressed affixation more broadly, this research offered a focused perspective on the narrative utility of prefixation in literary discourse. The analysis of these prefixed words revealed that they serve as subtle yet impactful linguistic tools, enhancing literary expression by adding layers of meaning to the narrative, deepening character portrayals, and enriching thematic resonance. The study concludes that prefixation is a significant contributor to the overall literary and emotional impact of the novel.

The findings show a total 18 complement clauses with the highest number of occurrences is 7 data. Most of complement clauses are introduced by complementizer “that” though in some cases it is omitted. Abstract

The study, entitled "Flouting Maxim of Quality in the Film Uptown Girls (2003)," aims to identify and analyze the types of flouting of the maxim of quality and the reasons why the main character, Molly Gunn, flouts this maxim throughout the film. The data for this research were collected from the film Uptown Girls (2003), focusing on utterances by Molly Gunn that contain instances of sarcasm, hyperbole, deliberate lies, and unsupported statements. This study applied observation and transcription methods, analyzed using a descriptive qualitative approach. The analysis was supported by Grice’s (1975) theory of the Cooperative Principle, specifically the maxim of quality, to categorize the types of flouting. Furthermore, the reasons behind Molly’s flouting were interpreted based on pragmatic functions such as emotional expression, self-defense, and social interaction. This study collected 50 instances of flouting the maxim of quality, including 14 cases of deliberate lies, 13 hyperboles, 12 sarcasms, and 11 unsupported statements. The analysis reveals that Molly Gunn’s floutings are not accidental but serve as deliberate communicative strategies to reflect her emotional vulnerability, identity assertion, and relational dynamics. Based on the results, it can be concluded that deliberate lie is the most frequently used flouting type, and the pragmatic motivation behind these utterances is primarily to preserve self-image and engage the audience through implied meaning.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of illocutionary acts and to analyze the implied meanings contained within them in Fast and Furious 6 movie. The analysis is grounded in Searle’s (1979) theory of illocutionary acts to categorize the utterances, while Leech’s (1981) semantic theory, specifically the concept of connotative meaning, is applied to interpret the implied meanings. The data were collected using a note-taking technique, focusing on dialogues that contain potential illocutionary acts. A qualitative method was employed to analyze the data, allowing for in-depth interpretation of language functions and underlying meanings. The findings reveal that all five types of illocutionary acts representatives, directives, commissive, expressive, and declaratives are present in the movie. However, commissive and directives emerge as the most dominant types, indicating that the characters frequently express commitments or intentions regarding future actions and attempt to influence the hearers to perform certain acts.

Abstract

This study examines person deixis in Michael Learns to Rock’s 1999 soft rock ballad Out of the Blue. While prior research has explored deixis in speeches, religious discourse, and talk shows, its role in song lyrics particularly emotional ballads remains underexplored. The song’s official lyrics served as the data source. Using Levinson’s (1983) typology for classification and Halliday and Hasan’s (1985) context of situation for interpretation, the research employed a qualitative approach involving careful listening, close reading, and systematic note-taking. The analysis revealed 38 instances of person deixis, primarily singular first- and second-person pronouns, with no plural or third-person forms. This distribution reflects the song’s intimate, direct communication and emphasis on personal emotions. Findings indicate that in lyrical contexts, person deixis enhances emotional closeness, fosters a direct connection between singer and listener, and shapes narrative perspective. The study demonstrates that deixis functions not only grammatically but also artistically, contributing to emotional impact and audience engagement. These insights expand understanding of deixis in non-traditional discourse and suggest its potential value in linguistic, literary, and musicological studies, as well as in language teaching using authentic song materials.

Abstract

This study examines how language shapes public opinion in news articles about President Joko Widodo's alleged fraudulent diploma. Using the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) framework, the study focuses on the clause as exchange (Mood system) and clause as representation (Transitivity system) to investigate the interpersonal and ideational meanings encoded in the text. The research uses a qualitative descriptive method based on Halliday and Matthiessen's (2014) theory to examine chosen online news stories from national media sources that cover the diploma issue. Each clause is evaluated to determine the mood types, process types, participants, and conditions. The findings suggest a predominance of declarative Mood types, which are employed to explain facts and assert claims, indicating how authors establish authority and persuade readers. Material and relational processes are the most commonly used, emphasizing acts and assigning attributes to Jokowi and institutional actors. This study concludes that news articles covering politically sensitive matters such as Jokowi's diploma are not objective, but are affected by linguistic tactics that serve ideological purposes. Using SFL analysis, the study demonstrates how media language produces social reality, contributing to critical media literacy and discourse awareness in sociopolitical contexts.

Abstract

Conjunction is an important element used to connect words, phrases, or clauses in a sentence. The function of conjunction is to clarify the meaning of a sentence so that it is easily understood by the writer and the reader. The aim of this research is to identify the types of causal conjunction in website of Bali Sun E-news articles. This website uploads daily news about Bali using English. Topics that are often discussed are about tourism, arts and culture, economy, social, development and others. The method used is descriptive qualitative method. That use Halliday and Hassan's (1976) theory. The result of this study is the discovery of five types of conjunctions that are stated as causal conjunctions, namely: so, therefore, because, since and as. From the five different kinds of causal conjunctions discovered, the causal conjunction so is the most widely used. The frequent use of so indicates that the cause-and0effect meaning is being made too simple in online news. Using a wider cariety of conjunctions could help make the news articles clearer and more meaningful.

Abstract

The focus of this research was on analyzing the violations of the maxim of quantity in “Amber Heard’s Testimonies during the Defamation Trial Against Johnny Depp.” The aim was to identify how the maxim of quantity was violated by Amber Heard and how it affected her testimonies. The data were collected by watching a video from the Law&Crime YouTube channel along with its transcript. The researcher noted and classified the violations based on their types, focusing on those related to the maxim of quantity. A descriptive qualitative method was used to analyze the data, supported by Grice’s Cooperative Principle theory. The findings showed that the maxim of quantity was frequently violated by Amber Heard on her testimonies. This happened because Amber Heard often gave too much unnecessary information in an effort to make her testimony more believable. However, giving too much information in court can actually reduce the credibility of a statement.
