Abstract This study examines assertive actions in digital communication on BTS's Instagram captions, exploring how these linguistic actions shape communication with fans in the dissemination of information. Assertive illocutionary acts are defined as utterances in which the speaker commits to the truth of a proposition, serving to convey facts, provide information, or describe events. This research uses Yule's (1996) and Searle's (1985) theory for a deeper analysis of the function of assertives. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods for data presentation. A total of 114 assertive actions were identified and analysed from 80 Instagram posts. The findings indicate that informing is the most dominant assertive function, with 64 instances (56.14%) identified. Abstract

With an emphasis on how the characters' speech reflects their emotional states and the dynamics of their relationships, the current research attempts to analyze the usage of expressive language functions in the 2022 movie A Man Called Otto. Using information from the speech of the main character, Otto Anderson, as well as the speech of the supporting characters who affect Otto's emotional reactions, the current research uses a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through repeated observation of the film, involving transcription and contextual note-taking that captured setting, interlocutors, and emotional tone. Content analysis was used to categorize the data according to Halliday’s (1973) theory of language functions, with particular emphasis on the expressive or personal function. The findings reveal that Otto’s dialogue predominantly features emotive, affective, and assertive expressions, while supporting characters provide empathetic and encouraging utterances that influence the emotional progression of the narrative. The study contributes to linguistic and cinematic discourse analysis by offering a detailed account of how expressive functions are structured both syntactically and contextually within film dialogue.

Abstract

This study analyzes the reflection of liberal feminism values in the characterization of Merida in the movie Brave. Feminism, particularly liberal feminism, emphasizes individual freedom, equal rights, and personal autonomy, making it relevant to Merida’s character, who opposes traditional norms and refuses an arranged marriage. This research employs the liberal feminism theory proposed by Tong (2008) to identify the values of equality and liberty in Merida’s character. The analysis also uses Boggs and Petrie’s (2018) theory of characterization, focusing on four aspects: appearance, dialogue, external actions, and the reactions of other characters. Data were collected using observation and note-taking techniques by watching the movie and reading the script. The findings were analyzed qualitatively by identifying scenes and dialogues that portray liberal feminist values. The results show that Merida represents liberal feminism through her resistance to patriarchal traditions, her fight for autonomy, and her assertion of individual rights. This research is expected to contribute theoretically to studies in literature and gender, especially in exploring feminist themes in film, and practically to help readers recognize and understand the importance of equality and freedom in society.
