Abstract

Abstract This study aims to identify and analyze the types of assertive speech acts, one of the five major categories of illocutionary acts proposed by Searle (1985), found in the movie “Zootopia” (2016). By applying Searle’s theory of illocutionary acts, this research examines the various types of assertive speech acts used by the characters and how these acts contribute to the development of the narrative and characters. The data were collected from character dialogues and analyzed through a qualitative method to identify emerging patterns. Assertive (or representative) speech acts were found to be the most frequent. This study focuses on classifying the types of assertive illocutionary acts used in the movie and interpreting their meanings within context. Searle and Vanderveken’s (1985) classification framework was employed to categorize 40 instances of assertive speech acts into five types: assert, claim, affirm, inform, and deny. A qualitative method was used for descriptive analysis, while a quantitative method was also utilized to determine the frequency of each type. Affirm was found to be the most frequent (27.5%), followed by assert (22.5%), claim (20%), inform (17.5%), and deny (12.5%). Keywords: illocutionary acts, assertive, Zootopia movie, Searle's theory, conversation, communication, character.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyzing illocutionary acts found in Fast X movie. This study entitled "Representative speech Acts found in the main character in Fast X Movie" discusses speech analysis based on the concept of speech acts of the main character. Each utterance shows three types of speech acts namely locutionary, illocutionary and perlocutionary. However, this study only focuses on the discussion of illocutionary speech acts because the meaning and specific purpose of a person's utterance are described in detail, so that the meaning of an utterance can be understood better in certain social interactions. The main theory used in analysing illocutionary speech acts in this study is the theory of Yule (1996) and supported by the theory of Leech (1983). Fast X movie was chosen as the data source in this study because of the many illocutionary speech acts spoken by the main actors of the movie. The steps of data collection include observing the movie, making notes on illocutionary speech acts, and grouping the data into several subcategories. This analysis shows that Dom significantly utilizes assertionswith 64 found. This is various communicative functions as an emphasis on his strategic plan, as well as to build and instill confidence in other characters.

Abstract

This study investigates the internal conflicts experienced by the main characters in Joe Penna’s Stowaway, focusing on Zoe Levenson, David, and Commander Bernadette. The research aims to identify the types of internal conflict and analyze how these conflicts influence character development and the narrative. Employing a qualitative method with observational techniques, the film was repeatedly viewed to record significant dialogues, expressions, and behaviors indicating inner struggles. Data were analyzed using Freud’s psychoanalytic theory (1923), Tajfel and Turner’s Social Identity Theory (1979), Kant's (1785) ethical perspectives from deontology and consequentialism. The findings reveal three main internal conflicts: Zoe’s moral dilemma between saving a life and ensuring crew safety, David’s struggle between personal research investment and collective survival, and Bernadette’s leadership responsibility versus self-sacrifice. These conflicts reflect the tension between moral values, professional identity, and survival instincts in an isolated environment. The study concludes that internal conflicts shape individual decision-making and drive the film’s emotional and ethical complexity.

Abstract

This research focuses on analyzing the derivational nominal suffixes found in William Shakespeare’s novel Romeo and Juliet (Wordsworth Classics). The study aims to identify what types of derivational nominal suffixes appear in the novel and to find out which type is the most frequently used. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the researcher collected data by reading the novel carefully and selecting words that contain derivational nominal suffixes. The collected words were then grouped into three categories based on their base forms: nouns formed from verbs, nouns formed from adjectives, and nouns formed from other nouns. The analysis found a total of 161 words with derivational nominal suffixes. The most dominant type is nouns formed from verbs, which appeared 90 times (55.90%), followed by nouns formed from adjectives with 45 occurrences (27.95%), and nouns formed from nouns with 26 occurrences (16.15%). This study helps to better understand how word formation works in English, especially in literary works, and may serve as a helpful reference for students and researchers who are interested in studying English morphology and vocabulary development. Keywords: derivational suffixes, nominal suffixes, word formation, morphology, Romeo and Juliet

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of figurative language in Lorde’s song lyrics using Knickerbocker and Reninger’s semantic theory. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method to identify and classify types of figurative language, including metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole, paradox, and irony. A total of 13 data were found: 3 metaphors, 3 similes, 1 personification, 4 hyperboles, 1 paradox, and 1 irony. Each example was examined to understand its meaning and function in the lyrical context. The findings reveal that Lorde’s lyrics utilize figurative language not only to enhance poetic expression but also to convey themes of alienation, identity, and emotional complexity. These figures of speech reflect the songwriter's inner conflicts and societal observations. The study concludes that figurative language analysis provides deeper insight into modern song lyrics and their semantic richness.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of code mixing in a YouTube podcast by Prilly Latuconsina featuring Agatha Chelsea entitled Prilly Latuconsina: Bisnis Kapal Laut Berawal Dari Suka Mancing?! – Safe Space. This study applied a qualitative descriptive method to describe the forms and reasons for code mixing. Data were obtained through listening, note taking, and transcription of conversations, then analyzed using Hoffman's theory. The results showed that the dominant form of code mixing was intra-sentential code-mixing in the form of words and phrases, such as privilege, chill, learning process, and wrap up. The reasons for code mixing included vocabulary needs, emphasis on meaning, language habits, and a communication style that were considered more modern. These findings confirmed that code mixing in podcasts not only functioned as a linguistic strategy but also represented social identity, the influence of globalization, and the trend of bilingualism among Indonesia's younger generation
