Abstract

The added value of coffee represents the difference between the selling price of processed coffee products and the cost of raw coffee beans used in production. This study aimed to analyze the added value and profit generated from processing Arabica coffee cherries into green beans, roasted beans, and ground coffee, comparing wet and dry processing methods at the Darul Mursyid Coffee Trading Unit in Simanosor Village, South Tapanuli Regency. Conducted from July to August 2023, this research utilized a descriptive quantitative approach with data collected purposively from two key informants: the heads of finance and production at PDM Coffee. The variables included processing methods (wet and dry) and their impact on added value and profitability. Data analysis employed the Hayami method (1987) for added value and an independent sample t-test for statistical comparisons. The study found that the added value for wet processing was IDR 8,623/kg (green beans), IDR 37,897/kg (roasted beans), and IDR 42,319/kg (ground coffee). For dry processing, the values were IDR7,195/kg, IDR 37,689/kg, and IDR 42,215/kg, respectively. The t-test indicated no significant difference in added value between the two methods (Sig. = 0.976, p > 0.05). Monthly profits from wet processing were IDR 99,851,000 (green beans), IDR20,423,500 (roasted beans), and IDR 6,298,500 (ground coffee), while dry processing yielded IDR78,936,000, IDR15,673,500, and 5,385,500, respectively.

Abstract

The palm oil industry in Indonesia, especially among smallholders, faces challenges in adopting Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) to achieve sustainability standards such as ISPO. This study explores the extent to which smallholders understand GAP and the factors that influence their adoption. Using a survey approach through structured interviews with oil palm farmers in Bangka District, this study explored the relationship between farmers' socio-economic characteristics and their understanding of GAP. The collected data were analyzed using multiple regression to identify significant patterns, especially regarding the influence of training and mentoring on GAP adoption. The study also highlighted unique dynamics between land size, income, and farming experience, providing important insights into small-scale farmers' adoption of modern methods. The results open up a discussion on how farmer capacity-building strategies can be designed to accelerate GAP adoption in the future.

Abstract

UMKM XYZ in Bandar Lampung is one of the banana chip producers whose processing uses the vacuum frying method. To ensure the quality of banana chip products is safe for consumers, UMKM must implement an HACCP system. HACCP is used in food products as a safety assurance system. Applying the HACCP system in UMKM can facilitate the business licensing process to penetrate a broader market. This study evaluates critical control points in producing vacuum-fried banana chips using HACCP. Data collection was carried out from February to April 2024, including field observations, interviews with MSME owners, and literature studies, and hazard identification was carried out at each production stage to determine critical control points (CCP) using the CCP decision tree. The study results show that the oil draining and packaging process is a CCP that requires strict control. Potential hazards include physical contaminants such as dust and insects, biological contaminants (molds, bacteria such as salmonella), and chemicals (heavy metals). Control measures include implementing occupational hygiene, using personal protective equipment (PPE), and visual inspection of products and packaging. HACCP can ensure the safety and quality of banana chips produced by analyzing processes that may cause contamination and providing corrective solutions, as well as increasing the competitiveness of UMKMs in the processed food sector.

Abstract

The increasing demand for beef in Tanjungpinang is reflected in the market opportunity. However, local beef production does not meet market demand. Thus, beef supplies are expected from outside the region. This dependency results from the area's minimal development and efficiency of beef cattle farming. The potential in the livestock sector is not fully utilized, thus creating opportunities to increase regional production and reduce dependence on external supplies. This research was conducted to develop a priority strategy for beef cattle development in Tanjungpinang. This study was conducted in Tanjungpinang using quantitative analysis methods. Purposive sampling is used as a technique. The subjects in this study included a population of farmers who have consistently run beef cattle farming businesses for the past 5 years. Referring to the predetermined criteria, the sample in this study consisted of 44 farmers. SWOT and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) methods were used in data analysis. The priority strategies for developing the beef cattle fattening agribusiness in Tanjungpinang include establishing partnerships with the government and private sector, developing agricultural and livestock areas in potential subdistricts through modernization, implementing agribusiness livestock field schools and training on producing high-nutrient livestock feed, facilitating and socializing the KUR (Kredit Usaha Rakyat) program, increasing the beef cattle population, creating alternative feed from agricultural waste, introducing agricultural feed processing technologies, and superior cattle breeds tailored to local conditions, Improving the effectiveness of business management and optimizing the role and function of livestock groups and reapplying modern livestock practices from major production centers.

Abstract

Maize is a strategic commodity due to its essential role in food, feed, energy, and industrial raw material supply. The significant role of maize has led to a continual increase in its demand each year. On the other hand, national maize production has declined, resulting in a portion of domestic demand being met through imports. A similar decline in maize production occurred in Larangan Luar Village, Pamekasan Regency. This study aims to analyze the factors influencing maize production, the level of technical efficiency, and the causes of inefficiency in maize farming in Larangan Luar Village. The research location was determined purposively, considering that the area is one of the maize production centers in Pamekasan. The sample consisted of 74 farmers, determined using the Slovin formula and selected through a random sampling method. The primary data used in this study were collected through interviews using a structured questionnaire. The research was conducted from September to December 2024. The research objectives were analyzed using the Cobb-Douglas Stochastic Frontier production function approach. Based on the analysis, variables that positively affect maize production are land area, seeds, and phonska fertilizer, while urea fertilizer has an adverse effect. The average level of technical efficiency among maize farmers is relatively low. The factors causing inefficiency are age and education. In light of the research findings, it is recommended that maize farmers adopt intercropping practices, enhance their knowledge of proper cultivation techniques, optimize the use of seeds and phonska fertilizer, and minimize reliance on urea fertilizer.

Abstract

The agricultural sector's contribution to the economy and food security in East Java province is so significant that it is necessary to consider the welfare of farmers. The farmer exchange rate, popularly called NTP, is a crucial indicator of farmer welfare. The first objective is to forecast the combined farmer exchange rate and subsector farmer exchange rate in East Java Province, and the second objective is to analyze the relationship between the subsector farmer exchange rate and the combined farmer exchange rate in East Java Province. Using multiple linear regression, the forecasting method used is triple exponential smoothing to analyze the relationship between the subsector farmer exchange rate and the combined farmer exchange rate. The results show that the combined farmer exchange rate in 2025 is predicted to decrease. The exchange rate of the subsector farmers is expected to decline in 2025, but only for food crops. The exchange rate of subsector farmers in food crops, horticulture, smallholder plantations, livestock, and fisheries simultaneously has a significant effect. It also has a considerable impact on the combined farmer exchange rate.

Abstract

This research evaluates the degree of welfare among rice farmers in Harau and Luak Districts, Lima Puluh Kota Regency. This research examines household income levels and consumption expenditures from December 2024 to February 2025. A quantitative and descriptive approach is employed to conduct the study. Data were collected from 75 rice farmer respondents who were selected by purposive sampling and active rice farming. Primary data on income and expenditure were obtained through direct interviews, while the level of welfare was measured using a structured questionnaire. Two leading indicators were used to assess the farmer household welfare threshold: the share of food expenditure (PPP) and the good service ratio (GSR). PPP helps determine the portion of income spent on food, which indicates food security status, while RJN assesses The capacity of the household to fulfill essential non-food requirements, including education, healthcare, and housing. The study's findings indicate that the majority of rice farmers are vulnerable to food security because most of the population uses most of their income for food needs. This indicates limited financial ability to meet non-food needs. The GSR results also show that most farmers are classified as less prosperous, especially in the Luak District, which shows that rice farming alone is not enough to achieve a decent standard of living. Several factors that influence the welfare of rice farmers include education level, health and nutritional status, number of dependents, land area, labor participation, and residential environmental conditions. In addition, farmers' ability to balance food and non-food needs is an important determinant of their welfare.

Abstract

Food security initiatives face significant challenges due to surging demand outpacing food supply, compounded by climate change and extreme weather events. Biotechnology innovations, particularly transgenic crops, offer a potential solution. As genetically modified organisms (GMOs), transgenic crops are engineered to enhance agricultural productivity and could play a pivotal role in mitigating Indonesia's food crisis. In this context, crops developed through genetic modification technologies are a promising approach to address Indonesia's food security challenges. The present investigation evaluates the feasibility of adopting these transgenic solutions while considering their advantages and limitations. This research was conducted in March 2025 using a narrative literature review method that began by collecting references from Google Scholar, including studies relevant to the opportunities and challenges of GMO crop development in Indonesia, and extracting data from these studies to be presented in narratives and tables. This literature review found that transgenic crops have the potential to support food security through the creation of agricultural commodities with better productivity, adaptive to biotic and abiotic stresses, and higher nutritional content, achieved by utilising the most advanced genetic engineering technologies. Meanwhile, challenges that limit the application of GMO crops relate to biosafety, regulatory, socio-economic, and ethical aspects, and public trust.

Abstract

Regional food security reflects the availability of sufficient, equitable, stable, affordable, safe, and nutritious food. Food production in Bengkulu Province has decreased, such as rice production, which fell from 296,472 tons in 2019 to 277,310 tons in 2023, due to limited land and population growth. Income levels significantly affect people's access to food. People with low purchasing power or relatively small incomes will consume products at relatively lower prices and in smaller quantities. This directly affects the community's food quality because food consumption is not balanced with good quality. This study was conducted in October-November 2024 to analyze food security and the dynamics of food availability, access, and quality in Bengkulu. The research used secondary data from BPS 2019-2023 and related agencies. Samples were taken purposively, namely the regencies of South Bengkulu, Rejang Lebong, North Bengkulu, Kaur, Seluma, Mukomuko, Lebong, Kepahiang, Central Bengkulu, and Bengkulu City, for the sample analysis of access and quality indicators. In contrast, the availability indicator excluded Bengkulu City from the data analysis, considering that food availability in urban areas comes from inter-regional trade and is not influenced by local production. Data analysis used descriptive, correlational, and Food Security Quotient (FSQ) methods. The research found that the average food security index of Bengkulu Province in 2019-2023 was 1.07. Each food security indicator has an index value of 1.12 for the availability indicator, 1.13 for the food access indicator, and 0.97 for the food quality indicator.
