Abstract

This study examines the communication network among Communication Science students at Widya Mandira Catholic University (Unwira) Kupang regarding information-seeking behaviors related to the Gaza humanitarian movement. Information is a critical human need, and understanding how students access and disseminate such information highlights the role of social networks in collective action. The research aims to analyze network patterns, identify key actors, and assess the efficiency of information flow within the student network. Using a quantitative approach with Social Network Analysis (SNA), data were collected via online questionnaires from 67 respondents, focusing on direct and reverse information-seeking, expertise recognition, and friendship ties. UCINET and NETDRAW software were employed to visualize and analyze network structures. Findings revealed a sparse network density (1.35%–1.54%), indicating fragmented communication channels. Key actors, such as Actor #61, emerged as central figures due to their expertise and active roles in information dissemination. Despite low overall density, these actors facilitated information flow, particularly within smaller subgroups. The study underscores the importance of social networks in humanitarian movements and suggests practical strategies for enhancing communication efficiency among students. Academic implications include advancing SNA theory, while practical recommendations focus on leveraging key actors to improve information dissemination in social movements.

Abstract

This study addresses the structural integrity and reinforcement needs of a deck-on-pile pier in Sumatra, Indonesia, following a 12-meter dredging operation and the planned use of a Rail Mounted Quay Crane (QCC). The research problem centers on evaluating the pier's existing steel pile foundation strength post-dredging, which reduces embedded pile depth and compromises load bearing capacity and assessing its ability to withstand QCC operational loads. The objectives include analyzing the pier's structural performance, proposing reinforcement designs, and ensuring compliance with safety standards. The methodology combines field data collection (Pile Driving Records, Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge tests, and Pile Integrity Tests) with structural modeling using SAP2000 to simulate load scenarios, including dead loads, QCC operational loads, and environmental forces. Findings reveal that dredging reduces pile embedded depth by 6–8 meters, leading to insufficient load-bearing capacity. Reinforcement strategies, such as adding new steel piles (φ609.6 mm) adjacent to existing ones, are proposed to restore stability. The analysis confirms that the reinforced structure meets geotechnical and deflection standards, with settlements below the 15 cm limit (SNI 8460:2017). The study's implications highlight the importance of pre- and post-dredging structural evaluations for aging piers, offering a practical framework for similar projects. Recommendations include verifying soil data post-dredging and conducting periodic inspections to ensure long-term safety. This research contributes to port infrastructure resilience by integrating empirical testing with advanced modeling to address real-world engineering challenges.

Abstract

This study investigates the structural implications of dredging activities on steel piles and associated railway infrastructure. Specifically, the dredging process, which extended to a depth of 12 meters, effectively reduced the embedded length of the existing steel piles to 8 meters, thereby compromising their load-bearing capacity. Structural modeling and analysis revealed that the reduced pile embedment may lead to insufficient support under operational loads, raising concerns about potential failure and non-compliance with safety standards. As a result, reinforcement measures were implemented, including strengthening the pile heads and installing additional steel piles around the existing foundation. The analysis also assessed the structural performance of key railway components, particularly beams LB1 and LB2, which were found to adequately support the operational QCC load. However, further investigation is recommended for other structural elements to ensure overall system integrity. To maintain safety and performance standards, the study highlights the necessity of re-verifying soil properties post-dredging, performing supplementary structural analyses where required, and strictly adhering to safe operational protocols during railway use. Additionally, a thorough review of beam and plate design specifications is advised to confirm compliance with current structural codes. These findings underscore the importance of integrating geotechnical and structural evaluations in infrastructure projects involving dredging to mitigate safety risks and support sustainable infrastructure management.

Abstract

The construction of the Kadusirung Dua Underpass Project in Banten aimed to improve access routes but encountered landslides during execution, necessitating design changes and additional soil investigations. This study examined the impact of inadequate soil surveys on engineering design, focusing on cost and time efficiency. The research objectives were to analyze the effects of design changes during construction, compare initial and revised designs, and evaluate savings potential if proper soil investigations were conducted initially. Using secondary data from the project, the study employed Microsoft Project for time-cost analysis and applied the Cost of Change vs. Opportunity to Influence theory. Findings revealed that design changes during construction increased costs by Rp 43.6 billion and extended the timeline by 566 days. Conversely, comprehensive soil surveys at the planning stage could have saved 25% of the time (237 days) and 18% of costs (Rp 38.9 billion). The implications highlight the critical need for thorough geotechnical investigations early in projects to mitigate delays and cost overruns. The study underscores the importance of adhering to soil testing standards (SNI 8460:2017) and optimizing design decisions during planning to enhance project efficiency.

Abstract

Ketepeng cina leaf herbal tea is a functional beverage made from the dried leaves of Cassia alata (ketepeng cina), which are known to contain beneficial bioactive compounds. However, its use as a herbal drink remains limited. This study aimed to investigate the effects of stevia leaf addition (0%, 6%, 12%, and 18%) and brewing time (2, 3, and 4 minutes) on the physicochemical and sensory characteristics of ketepeng cina leaf herbal tea. A completely randomized design (CRD) with a two-factor factorial pattern and three replications was employed. The parameters evaluated included color index, pH, total soluble solids (TSS), total flavonoids, total phenols, antioxidant activity, and sensory attributes. Data were analyzed using ANOVA at a 5% significance level, followed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) when significant differences were found. The findings showed that stevia concentration and brewing time significantly influenced the tea's characteristics. The optimal formulation was achieved with an 18% stevia concentration and a 3-minute brewing time, resulting in 3.68°Brix TSS, 0.18 mgQE/g total flavonoids, 1.93 mgGAE/g total phenols, and 49.21% antioxidant activity. This study suggests that the addition of stevia and controlled brewing time can improve the functional and sensory quality of ketepeng cina herbal tea, making it a promising alternative in the development of antioxidant-rich herbal beverages.
