This research aims were to describe the types of presupposition used by the Parhata in Batak Toba wedding ceremony and to reveal the realization of presupposition in Parhata’s spoken words in Batak Toba wedding ceremony based on Yule’s framework (2000). In this study the researcher adapted textual analysis (Mc Kee, 2013) to analyze the data. The sources of the data were two videos of wedding ceremonies of Batak Toba. The data were taken from the script of Parhata’s spoken words during the wedding ceremonies. The current research findings showed that the existential presupposition was dominantly used in Parhata’s spoken words. As the mediator and informant in the wedding ceremony, Parhata tended to utter in positive statements. The realization of presupposition types in Parhata’s utterances was recognized according to the theme of presupposition in Yule’s framework. Moreover, the six types of presupposition found in the current research although the findings from wedding ceremony video one and wedding ceremony video two as following; 40 existential presuppositions, five factive presuppositions, two non-factive presuppositions, four lexical presuppositions, one structural presupposition and two counterfactual presuppositions. The realization of presupposition types in Parhata’s utterances was identified by the characteristics of each presupposition, such as mentioning an entity or stating contrary to the fact.

ABSTRACT This study concerns on Improving Students’ Achievement in Writing Descriptive Text by Using Movie Posters. The underlying objective of this study is to investigate whether teaching descriptive by using movie posters potentially improves students’ skill. The research was conducted by using Classroom Action Research (CAR). The subject of the research was class X of SMA SWASTA UTAMA MEDAN. The number of the students was 28. The procedure of the research was administrated into two cycles which each cycle consisted of three meetings. Each meeting included four steps namely: planning, action, observation and reflection. There were two kinds of data collected during the study, qualitative and quantitative data. The instrument for collecting the quantitative data was the writing of descriptive text. The qualitative data were gathered by using diary notes, observation sheet and questionnaire sheet. Based on the data analysis, the mean of students’ scores in Test I was 45.71; Test II was 62.32 and Test III was 81.96. The quantitative & qualitative data showed that the students were interested in using movie poster as a media in learning descriptive text. The conclusion is the using of movie poster as a media in teaching-learning process improves students’ achievement in writing descriptive text. The objectives of this study were to investigate the types of teachers’ oral corrective feedback on speaking skill that the students prefer in grade tenth of SMK Negeri 4 Medan. This research used descriptive qualitative method and the data were collected through documentation and interview. The framework undertaken is proposed by Lyster and Ranta and the interview questions were adapted from Thorsteinsen. The data was analyzed in four steps: 1). Data Collection, 2) Data Reduction, 3). Data display, 4). Conclusion and Drawing verification. The findings found that there were 4 kinds of oral corrective feedback that the teachers gave, namely Clarification Request, Elicitation, Explicit Correction, dan Metalinguistic Feedback. The most dominant of teachers’ oral corrective feedback that the students prefer was Explicit Correction. It was 10 data or 41,7%. Based on the analysis interview, the reason why students prefer the type of teachers’ oral corrective feedback on speaking was because it could make the students easy to understand and know the correct anwser not in a long time because the teachers gave it immediately. The finding suggested that the English teacher should give the written feedback to students’ writing task to enable them improve the writing skill.

This study concerned on improving students ‘achievement in vocabulary by using flashcard. The objective of this study was to found out the improvement of students’ achievement in vocabulary by using flashcard. This research was conducted by using action research method. The subject of the study was VII-4 student of SMA Prayatna Medan, which consisted of 30 students. The instruments of collecting data were quantitative (vocabulary test) and qualitative data (diary notes, and observation sheets). In analyzing, the mean of students’ score for the first vocabulary test was 40.33 the second vocabulary was 64 and the third vocabulary test was 83. The total percentage of the improvement from the first vocabulary test to the third was 100%.The conclusion is the application of flashcard can improve students’ achievement in vocabulary. The qualitative data show that students were enthusiastic and interested in learning vocabulary during the teaching learning process. Keywords: Achievement, vocabulary, flashcard

Principally, this research attempts to analyze the anxiety disorder on the main character of novel TheWoman In The Window by A. J. Finn. The objective of this study to find out 1) To investigate the causes ofanxiety disorder through to the main character in the novel based on the psychoanalytic approach bySigmund Freud. 2) To explain how the treatmentsdone by the main character to reduce her anxietydisorder in the novel and 3) To explain the reasons for the treatmentsdone by the main character in thenovel. The writer used qualitative design method in analyzing the data that focused on the textual data. Theinstruments for collecting data are readingtechnique, and writing technique. This research analyzesbyrelating the data with Freud’sPsychoanalysis theory. The results of theresearch show that 1) The causesanxiety disorder to the main character because have an accident in the past that make the sufferer becomestress, and post-traumatic stress disorder. 2) There are two treatments done by the main character toreduce her anxiety disorder that is medication and therapy. 3) The reasons for the treatments done by maincharacter because with healing through therapy and medication will be able to reduce the traumaexperienced by Anna Fox.

ABSTRACTThis study aims at improving students’ achievement in writing descriptive paragraph by using Movie Posters. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class X SMA Negeri I Galang, which consist of 36 students. The research was conducted in two cycles which cycle I and cycle II consist of 3 meetings. The instruments for collecting data were qualitative (interview, diary notes, and observation sheet) and quantitative data(writing test). Based on the data analysis, the mean of students’ score in Test I was 56,38 ; for the Test II was 68,05 , and for the Test III was 85. The qualitative data showed that the students were interested by using Movie Posters. The conclusion is that by using Movie Posters improves the students’ achievement in writing descriptive. This study aimed to identifying the types of hate speech based on Mondal (2018) and the intentions of hate speech based on Kreidler (2002) in the comment section of Joe Biden’s Instagram posts. This study was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative method with thematic analysis. The source of the data is the hate comments from Joe Biden’s Instagram posts from 3rd November to 10th. The results of this research showed the classification of hate speech and the categorization of intentions of hate speech. From 150 data it was found there were 7 types out of 10 types of hate speech, they are 1 comment for type of Race, 57 comments for Behavior, 17 comments for Physical, 1 comment for Gender, 2 comments for Sexual Orientation, 6 comments for Disability and 66 comments for Other. However, for the intentions of hate speech, all comments contain all intentions that can be categorized. The intention that dominantly found is Insulting, Accusing, Mocking, Insinuating and Blaming.

ABSTRACT This study was focused on the improvement of Grade XI students’ writing achievement in analytical exposition through the application of collaborative writing strategy. The objective of this study was to find out whether collaborative writing strategy could improve Grade XI students’ writing achievement in analytical exposition text. The study was conducted by using Classroom Action Research (CAR). The subjects of this study were students of Grade XI Class 2 of State Senior High School (Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri: SMAN) 4 Pematangsiantar consisting of 32 students. The study was implemented in two cycles and each cycle consisted of three meetings. The instruments of data collection consisted of quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data were taken from students’ written test and the qualitative data were taken from the interview, diary notes, observation sheet, and questionnaire. Based on the analytical exposition writing result, students’ score was 57.9. In the test of Cycle I, the mean score was 67, and in the test of Cycle II was 78.3. Based on the observation sheet, it was found that the teaching-learning process well done. The students were active and curious in writing. In line with the data, it was found that collaborative writing strategy can improve Grade XI students’ writing achievement in analytical exposition text. This Study was about the theme, rheme and thematic progression of students ' recount text of the tenth grade at SMA Budisatrya Medan. The aims of this study were (1) to investigate thematic progression pattern used in recount text (2) to investigate the reason why the students used thematic progression in the way they did. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data in this study were clauses of students ‘recount text. The instruments of collecting data were elicitation technique and interview. The data was analyzed by using interactive model technique of Miles, Huberman and Saldana (2014). The results of this study were the following. (1) There were two patterns of thematic progression used in students’ recount text, they were Theme Reiteration/Constant Theme Pattern (TR/CTP), and Zig - zag / Linear Theme Pattem ( Zig - zag / LTP). (2) The reason to use the thematic progression by the students, they were: (a) the students were lack of knowledge about the use of the thematic progression, (b) they are also less interested in writing. (c) The students got resources from English teacher’s explanation and (d) the students got resources from reading recount text.Keywords: Theme , Rheme , Thematic Progression , Recount text .

This study was focused on Jargon used byNaposo Nauli Bulung group in Batak Angkola society. The objectives of this study were to find out kinds of Jargons used inNaposo Nauli Bulung group, and to describe the meanings of jargons related to denotative and connotative meaning. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from the interpersonal functions of Naposo Nauli Bulung group in Batak Angkola societyand gathered descriptively, where the data is obtained, analyzed, classified and interpreted based on the results of research in the field. The technique used in the study was a technique documentary communication by Bailey (1994). The findings of this study show that kinds of jargon used in Naposo Nauli Bulung group classified into seven categories, namely Basilect, Colloquial, Cant, Slang, Vulgar, Acrolect, Argot.There were 100jargons founds in Naposo Nauli Bulung group, 63 jargon (63%) has denotative meaning and 37 jargon (37%) has connotative meaning. Base on the result, jargon was the most frequent that occurred among group members.
