Abstract

ABSTRACT This study deals with the lexical density especially the lexical items of English reading texts in the textbook for senior high school. The objectives of the study are to find out the lexical density especially the lexical items which formed in the reading texts of Look Ahead textbook and the type of genre which has the highest lexical density of the reading texts. This study was conducted by descriptive method with qualitative approach. The data of this research were the English reading texts of Look Ahead textbook for senior high school grade twelve published by Erlangga. The result of the analysis showed that: (1) The lexical items that formed in narrative texts are noun and verb, explanation texts are noun and verb, discussion texts are noun and verb, and review texts are noun, adjective, and verb. This means that narrative, explanation, and discussion texts are formed by two lexical items, they are noun and verb while review texts are formed by 3 lexical items, they are noun, adjective, and verb. (2) The lexical density of explanation texts are 58,42% an 52,05%, review texts are 55,73% and 53,51%, narrative texts are 48,96% and 43,97%, and discussion texts are 47,79% and 42,57%. The highest lexical density of the reading texts is the explanation text with percentage 58,42%. This meant that explanation text is the most difficult text to be comprehended in the textbook. It is suggested that further textbook writers to concern with the lexical density of the reading texts so that the textbook can be used and understood by the teacher and the students. Abstract

This study discussed about the maxim violation of Raja Parhata in Martonggo Raja Batak Toba ceremony. The aims of this study were to analyze the kinds of maxim of violation of Raja Parhata and reasons of maxim of violation occurred in Martonggo Raja Batak Toba Ceremony. This study conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research was from the utterances of Raja Parhata. The source data were from two Martonggo Raja videos and two informants of Raja Parhata. The writer found violation of maxim of quantity with total number 28 utterances (46.6%), violation of maxim of quality with total number 3 utterances (5%), violation of maxim of relation with total number 21 utterances (35%) and violation of maxim of manner with total number 8 utterances (13.4%). There were four reasons of the Raja Parhata did violation of maxims in Martonggo Raja Batak Toba ceremony, namely to show respect (43 utterances, 71,6%) is the most reason. Besides, the Raja Parhata also change the topic (15 utterances, 25%), and the fewest reason is to keep a secret (2 utterances, 3,4%).

Abstract

This study was attempted to discover the improvement students’ vocabulary mastery by using realia for elementary students’ Grade IV. The objective of this study was to find out whether realia can significantly improve students’ vocabulary or not. In this study, the writer was conducted by Applying Classroom Research. The subject of this study was one class of the grade IV students’ of SD Negeri 060811 Medan which consisted of 36 students’. The quantitative data were taken from vocabulary test as the instrument to find out the students’ score. The qualitative data taken from diary notes and observation sheet describe the improvement of the students’ vocabulary mastery of the students’ vocabulary mastery was mostly improved in every test. The range of improvement of the first test and the last test was 83,33%.  The observation sheet and the diary notes showed that the students’ were interested in the teaching learning process. These finding show that there was an improvement on the students’ vocabulary through realia that was supported by the result, the mean score of the second test (64,44) was better than mean score of first test (39,17), and the mean score of the third test (78,05) was better than the mean score of the second test. This implies that realia can be an alternative strategy in improving students’ vocabulary mastery. It is suggested that realia to be used in teaching vocabulary especially to young learners. Abstract

The research discussed about conversation analysis of turn-taking technique in “Ellen Show” talk show. Everyone should be familiar with “Ellen Show” this is one of the best popular talk show in American. The aims of this study were: (1) to find out the types of turn-taking techniques that used by the host of “Ellen Show” talk show by using Sacks (1974) in Garcia and Jacobs (2010) (2) to find out how the differences of turn-taking between male and female guests in “Ellen Show” talk show by using Pennebaker, J. W. (2007). The descriptive qualitative method is being used in this research. The data were derived from the dialogue script, which was transcribed from the video. The findings of the study revealed that: (1) there were three types of turn-taking current speaker select next, next speaker self-selection, current speaker continue. The highest frequency was current speaker select next. The host and guests in “Ellen Show” talk show used current speaker select next which appeared 21 times, next speaker self-selection was the second highest frequency which occurred 19 times, then the lowest frequency was current speaker continue produced by the host and guests which appeared 4 times in eight episodes. (2) In all eight episodes, women take more turns in talking seven times than males three times. The researcher recommends that future studies examine turn-taking from a variety of perspectives, such as how turn-taking is used in movies by gender or other factors. The researcher hopes that this study will be valuable to readers and future conversation analysis researchers.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research concerned on Improving Students’ Achievement in Writing Procedure Text through Picture Word Inductive Model. In this research, the writer conducted classroom action research. Subject of this research were the second year students of SMA N 1 Pematangsiantar Class X-1 consisted of 30 students. This research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle was organized in four steps, namely Planning, Acting, Observing, and Reflecting. Cycle II was the improvement of Cycle I. There are two kinds of data collected during the research, qualitative and quantitative data. The instruments for the quantitative data were writing test while the qualitative data was gathered through Observation Sheet, Interview Sheet and Diary Notes. Findings showed that the students’ score improve from orientation Test to Test. Based on the data analysis, Students’ mean in Test 1 was 52.40, in test II was 67.13 and Test III was 81.16. Abstract

This study deals with the characterization of Sue Ann as the main character in Ma film and it was aimed to knowing the characteristics of personality development of Sue Ann.  It was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative method. The source of the data was taken from the dialogues and pictures of characterization of main character found in Ma film. The data were collected by using documentation technic. The data were analyzed by using descriptive qualitative analysis. The findings of this study showed that the characteristics of Sue Ann’s before she met Ben Hawkins and after she met him. There were factors that influence the changes of personality development by Hurlock (1976) included those condition are physical changes, environment, significant people, and social pressure. The factors affecting the change of Sue Ann’s personality, Sue Ann become Neuroticism/Negatively person, her behaviors and actions were changed such as depression and take revenge person.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study deals with the students’ achievement improvement in writing procedure texts by using videos by applying classroom action research. The subjects of this research were 38 students of class X-1 SMA TELADAN MEDAN. After analyzing the data in two cycles of classroom action research, it was found there was an improvement of students’ mean score from 60.44 in assessment before applying video became 68.52 in cycle I and improved again became 78.89 in cycle II. It means that the use of video significantly improves the students’ achievement in writing procedure texts. Keywords: writing, procedure text, action research, videos, X-I SMA Teladan Medan.

Abstract

This study is about teacher’s oral feedback towards students’ response in speaking skill in SMAS 2 Muhammadiyah Medan. This study aims to find out teacher’s feedback used in English classroom interaction and to find out the reasons why the teacher uses the dominant feedback during teaching and learning process in English classroom interaction at eleventh grade students in academic year of 2019/2020. The subject of this research was 33 students. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research. The data of this study were collected by using observation, audio recording, documentation and interview for supported the data. The data were analyzed by using Ellis (2009) theory. The result showed that 17 praise which is (37%), 7 recast which is (15,2%), 6 metalinguistic feedback which is (13%), 13 repetation which is (28,3%), 3 paralinguistic signals which is (6,5%). So the dominant type of feedback used by the teacher in class XI MIA 1 of SMAS 2 Muhammadiyah Medan is praise which is 40%. There are 3 reasons why teacher used the dominant type: (1) the teacher only know the general feedback, (2) to encourage the students to be more enthusiastic in responding to the teacher and (3) the teacher only focused on positive feedback. This research is expected to be an inspiration for other researcher to conduct more conductive research in the future about feedback in learning English.Keywords: teacher’s feedback, response, speaking skill.

Abstract

This study was about the use of metaphor in the onang-onang song. The goals of the study were: to find out the types of metaphor used in onang-onang song, describe the realization of each type, and explain the reasons of onang-onang song represent in the particular value. The descriptive-qualitative method was used in the analysis of metaphor. The data of the study taken from six Onang-onang songs and have 67 utterances 11 lines have metaphor meaning. The results of the data analysis showed that there were three types of metaphor: conceptual (45.4%),and followed by ontological (36.3%), and orientational metaphor (18.1)%. The song were realized linguistically by identifying in each of the uterancess to get the implicit message in the song. The onang-onang songs were used in cultural values because all of the message in each of lyrics has a good meaning such as adviced, shared experience, and also kind of prayer to the new mariage life. So to make this study be strong, a tribal leader has an important role to translate of each lyrics.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research concerns on improving students’ achievement in speaking by using short movie media. The objective was to find out the improvement of students’ achievement in speaking. This research was conducted by using action research method. The subject of the research was XI IPA-1 students of SMA Negeri 8 Medan. The numbers of students were sixteen students. They were taught speaking by using short movie media. The instruments used were diary notes, interview sheets, and observation sheets. In analyzing data, the mean of students’ score for the first competency test was 42,5 for the second competency test was 61,25 and for the third competency test was 85 and the total percentage of improvement from the first competency test to the third competency test was 68,75%. The conclusion is that students’ achievement in speaking can be improved by using short movie media. It is suggested that teachers should apply short movie media as one of media to improve students’ speaking achievement.Key Words: Students’ achievement, Speaking, Short Movie Media
