Abstract

The study dealed with the maincharacter’s conflicts and defensemechanisms found in a novel “TentangKamu” written by Tere Liye. The objectivesof this study were to find out the types ofconflict of the main character and thedefense mechanism that is reflected insolving the problem. The sources of thedata were taken from the novel “TentangKamu” By Tere Liye. This was anobservation study because this studyfocused on the analysis of spoken languagein the novel. The collected data wereidentified, divided, and analyzed based onliterature and psychology perspectives ofIslam’s (2016) theory and defensemechanisms by Cramer (2006). Thefindings show that Sri Ningsih, as the maincharacter, faces the external conflict whichis described as person vs nature whereasthe internal conflicts is person vs himselfwhich describes the features of sadness,anger, betrayal, anxiety, love and regret asexperienced by the main character. Theconflict between person vs. herself(internal conflict) becomes the mostcommon conflict faced by the maincharacter then it was followed with thedefense mechanism of denial andidentification.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study was conducted as an attempt to improve students’ writing achievement in a procedure text by using Still Pictures. The method of the study was Classroom Action Research with two cycles and six meetings. The subject of the study was the students of Grade VII students’ MTs. S. Syahbuddin Mustafa Nauli. The research was conducted in two cycles and each cycle consists of three meetings. The instruments for collecting data were taken from writing tests as quantitative data. The result shows the improvement of the students’ score from orientation test to Cycles I and II tests. The mean of the students’ score for orientation test as Test I was 50.41, Cycle I test was 66.25, and Cycle II test was 85.41. The total percentage of the improvement from Orientation test to Cycles I and II tests was 99.2 %. It can be concluded that the use of Still Pictures improves students’ achievement in writing a procedure text. The qualitative data taken from Observation Sheet and Diary Notes show that the students’ were enthusiastic and attracted in writing a procedure text because the Still Pictures encourage their creativities and ideas to write better. For English teachers, it is suggested to use Still Pictures as one alternative media of teaching writing a procedure text.

Abstract

This was a conducted Research and development (R & D) study which concerned with the using of appropriate teaching and learning media. The objectives of this study were to find out the existing teaching media used in XI grade students of SMA N 11 Medan and to develop Audio-Visual media by using VideoPad for teaching writing Analytical Exposition Text. The data was gathered in the preliminary data by using interview and questionnaire on XI grade students and the English teacher. Then need analysis was done through questionnaire and interview as well. This research described the existing media available in the school and how it is used in English teaching and learning process that a development should be done. According to the result of the need analysis there were only 18% of the students considered that the teaching and learning process was helpful. It also showed information about students‟ choice of method and media to learning writing. By considering the result of the need analysis, an Audio-Visual media then developed as a teaching and learning aid of writing Analytical Exposition text. The product had later been assessed by two experts to find out the eligibility of the media. Through the experts‟ assessment which was contained of 4 scoring criterias, it was known that the eligibility of the media was “Very Good” based on the scoring criteria.  Keywords: Teaching and Learning Writing, Audio-Visual media, Analytical Exposition, VideoPad.

Abstract

This study deals with improving students’ reading comprehension through Two Stay – Two Stray Leaning Model. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class XI-IPA SMA GAJAH MADA Medan which consisted of 28 students. The research was conducted in two cycles and every cycle consisted of four meetings and two meetings. The instruments for collecting data were quantitative data (multiple choice test) and qualitative data (diary notes, observation sheet, questionnaire sheet, and interview). In second competence test 14 % (four students) got 70 points. It means there was an improvement for 14 %. In next competence test 86 % (24 students) got 70 points. The improvement was 72 %. It can be concluded that Two Stay – Two Stray Learning Model could improve students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study focuses on the improvement of students’ reading comprehension achievement in narrative text through Experience-Text-Relationship (ETR) Method. This study deals with   classroom action research which was done in 6 meetings. The subject of this study was the second grade of SMP N 41 Medan, class VIII5. One class is totally taken as the subject of this study. The number of the sample is 34 students. The data of this study were obtained from the reading test, observation sheet, and diary notes. Based on the analysis data, it was found that the students’ achievement improved from the orientation test, test cycle I, and test cycle II. The findings of this study indicated that Experience- Text- Relationship (ETR) Method improved the students’ reading comprehension achievement. The students’ mean scores showed significant improvement, the mean of Cycle I = 64, 38 and the mean of Cycle II = 77, 20. Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing the types of politeness strategy in request which represented in Peningsetan/Srah-Srahan event of Javanese Wedding Ceremony. The descriptive qualitative method used to gain the findings of the data. The documentary transcription from recording that event was the source of the data. From that findings, 25 formed requests from 12 utterances has been analyzed. The data found were 12 utterances in the Peningsetan event of Javanese Wedding Ceremony. And from that utterances, 25 sentences classified as requests, which were found throughout transcribing methods, and the results are Bald-on record 4 (16%), and Positive Politeness 21 (84%), and for the Negative and Off-Record Strategy shared 0 amounts. Later on, the positive politeness was the dominant type of politeness since the wedding was a sacred ceremony, the using of positive politeness would be found massively. The instrument of this study was recording the event and transcribing them into list and marking. Positive Politeness dominated because of the events required manners, even in daily life, Javanese used low tones and more polite language to utter the meaning of the speaker.

Abstract

Abstract Students’ achievement in writing descriptive text is very low, in this study Realia was applied to solve the problem. Action research in conducted for the result and the technique to collect the data, qualitative and quantitative are applied in this research. The subject of this research is grade VII in Junior High School (SMP N 2 ) Kisaran. In the first evaluation (66, 2926) increased to the mean of second evaluation (76, 7560) and the mean of third evaluation (87, 0243). Observation result showed that the students gave their good attitudes and responses during teaching and learning process by applying the application of  Realia. Questionnaire and interview report showed that students agree that the application of Realia had helped them in writing descriptive text. It can be conclude that the students’ achievement is improved when thay are tought through Realia. Key Words: Achievement, Writing, Descriptive Text and Realia

Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing the kind politeness strategy in request which represented in Traditional Market. The descriptive qualitative method used to gain the findings of the data itself. From the findings, 11 requests from 7 speakers have been analyzed. And from those, 21 requests filtered through transcribing the event. Of all 21 requests, it was found that there were 2 politeness strategies used, they were Bald-On record 32 (32%), and Positive Politeness 11 (1,21%) and offRecord16 (5,6%). Later on, the positive politeness was the dominant type of politeness since the traditional market was a full of bargaining, the using of positive politenesswould be found in many ways. The instrument of this study was recording the eventand transcribing them into list. And from that list, the categorization would be easy to extract the data. Thus the writer found that positive politeness that used also similar to another local traditional market.

Abstract

Abstract The objective of this study is to find out whether Brainstorming Technique can improve students’ Achievement in writing. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of this research was the second year students of SMP VIII-2 Swasta HKBP Sidorame Medan. The research was conducted in two cycles. The first cycle was three meetings and the second cycle was also three meetings. The instruments for collecting data used writing test for quantitative data and used diary notes, interview sheet and observation sheet for qualitative data and the qualitative data showed that the students were interested in applying Brainstorming technique. Based on the writing test result, the students’ score kept improving in every test. In orientation test, the mean score was 65.50. In the test of cycle 1 the mean score was 73.33 and the mean score in the test of cycle 2 was 79.97. In line with the data, it was found that the Brainstorming technique can improve students’ writing achievement.   Keywords: Writing, Writing Assessment, Brainstorming, Classroom Action Research

Abstract

This study aims at investigating the effect of Guided Reading Strategy on Junior High School Student Reading Comprehension. The population of this study was the students of SMP Swasta Kristen Immanuel on Jl. Slamet Riyadi No. 1 Medan, fifty eight students from the population was taken as the samples of the research. The sample was divided into two groups. The first group (29 students) as the experimental group, while the rest (29 students) as the control group. The experimental group was taught by using guided reading strategy . The instrument of collecting the data was multiple choice tests. To obtain the reliability of the test, the writer used the Kuder Richardson Formula (KR-21). The result of the study showed that the reliability of the test was 0.733. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula, the analysis showed that the score of the student in the experimental group was significantly higher than that of students in the level of control group at the level of significance 0,05 with the degree of freedom (df)56 the t-observed is 5.33  while the t-table is 1.671.therefore the null hyphothesis (Ho) is rejected and the hyphothesis alternative (Ha) is accept   Key Words: Guided, Reading Strategy, Reading Comprehension
