The aim of this study are: 1) to design interactive learning media for writing skill by using Macromedia Flash 8, and 2) to investigate the eligibility product of interactive for writing skill by using Macromedia Flash 8. Research and development is used as the research method. This research took place at MAN 2 Model Medan. The product has validated by expert validations (material and media). The instrument for collecting data by using questionnaires with Likert scale 1-4. The data was analyzed based on expert validation to revise the product. The result shows that: 1) the material in interactive learning media for writing skill with the average 3.9 (Very eligible, no need revision), and 2) the interactive learning media is eligible, no need revision with average 3.2. Therefore, the product of interactive learning media is appropriate to use as interactive learning media in teaching learning English process. The objective of this study was to investigate whether Numbered Heads Together Technique significantly affected on students’ achievement in reading recount text. This study was an experimental research design. The population of this study was grade X students of SMA Swasta Teladan Medan with the total number of students was 60 as samples and all of the students was taken by using random sampling. The students were divided into two groups, namely experimental and control group. The experimental group was taught by using Numbered Heads Together Technique, while the control group was taught by using Lecturing Method. The instrument of collecting data was multiple choice tests which then divided into pre-test and post-test. To obtain the result of the reliability of the test, the researcher used the Kuder Richardson formula (KR-21). The result of the calculation showed that the reliability of the test was 0.64, which means that the reliability of the test is high. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The result of the analysis showed that tvalue is higher than ttable (5.50 > 2.00) at the level of significance 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 58. It means that there is a significant effect of using Numbered Heads Together Technique on the students’ achievement in reading recount text. The aim of this study is to develop Picture Series as a media for teaching writing procedure text at the third year students of Pahlawan Nasional Junior High School. The researcher used Research and Development (R &D) method through ten steps: observing, evaluating need analysis, developing first media, validating with experts, revising it, testing in small group, revising, testing in large group, revising, producing final product. The subjects of this research were 30 students from IX-1 class, and 34 students from IX-2 class. The instrument of collecting data was using questionnaires. The data were analyzed by descriptive text technique. The result of the product from two validators – an English lecturer from State University of Medan and an English teacher from Pahlawan Nasional Junior High School, was in scale of 4 which was in good quality. And the result from all of the students was in scale of 4 which was in good quality too. It means that the developed product/Picture Series is eligible to be used for teaching writing procedure text for the third year students in Pahlawan Nasional Junior High School. The objective of this study is to find out the quality of the English final test designed for the second semester of third grade students of SMAN 1 Pagaran in academic year 2016/2017. It describes whether or not the test items have good characteristic of test in terms of validity, reliability, difficulty level, and discriminating power. The test consists of 35 items multiple choice forms. The research design uses in this study was Descriptive Qualitative Research. To find out the discriminating power of the test, the writer chose the top 31% for the upper group and top 31% for the lower group. The result of this study shows that there are 18 (51%) acceptable items to meet the criteria of validity and 17 items (49%) is Invalid. The test is reliable since has 0.676 the level of validity. The test has unacceptable index of difficulty since has 15 items (43%) too difficult and are only 5 items (14%) easy items. Whereas for discriminating power index, the writer found there are 7 (20%) has negative result of the point have to be discard, 6 (17%) poor items, 8 (22%) satisfactory items, 13 (38%) good items, and 1 (3 %) excellent item. In conclusion, English final test designed for the second semester of third grade students of SMAN 1 Pagaran in academic year 2016/2017 does not meet the criteria of effective and acceptable test.Keywords: Validity, Reliability, Level of Difficulty, Discrimination Power

The Objective of this research were: (1) To develop ERM to meet the needs of second grade of dressmaking students at SMKN 10 Medan, (2) To Design ERM which is suitable to the needs of second grade of dressmaking students at SMKN 10 Medan. The subjects were the eleventh year students of dressmaking department at SMKN 10 Medan. The study was a Research and Development (R & D) study which is adapted from Borg and Gall (1983). This research were conducted by six phases, they are, Gathering information and data, Analyzing data, Designing new reading materials, Validating new reading materials, Revising new reading materials, Revised-developing reading materials. The Instruments for collecting the data were 30 questionarries need analysis and interview students, teacher and practitioner. The results from the data were the students need authentic material which related and appropriate to their need in order they can understand English well. The developed materials were validated by two experts, one is a lecture and the other is a teacher. The validator scored 4 creteria. The research findings showed that the developed materials were appropriate to be implemented. The average score of validation was 4,72 (lecture score) and 4,75 (teacher score). Based on the results of the study, conclusion and suggestions are directed to the teachers and institution who are teaching in SMKN 10 Medan generally to create and to develop the materials based on students need.Key words: English Reading Materials, Vocational High School Students, English for Specific Purpose

This study aims to find out the GI and LD level, the text which has the highest GI and LD and what make the text has the highest GI and LD of Advanced Learning English 2 textbook. This study was conducted by using qualitative research. The data of study were the 18 texts inside of the Advanced Learning English 2 textbook for grade XI Senior High School. The data were analyzed by using Eggins (2004) theory. The result of this study: 1) GI level of text was high based on Eggins theory that the texts had more complex clauses than simple clause. Text 1 was 0.52. Text 2 was 1.24. Text 3 was 0.84. Text 4 was 0.92. Text 5 was 1.95. Text 6 is 1.46. Text 7 was 1.03. Text 8 was 0.90. Text 9 was 1.62. Text 10 was 1.85. Text 11 was 1.64. Text 12 was 2.25. Text 13 was 2.60 Text 14 was 1.40. Text 15 was 1.80. Text 16 was 4.00. Text 17 was 1.42. Text 18 was 1.73. The LD level of text was low based on Eggins theory that the texts had more content carrying lexical item than non-content carrying lexical items . Text 1 was 0.56. Text 2 was 0.52. Text 3 was 0.52. Text 4 was 0.54. Text 5 was 0.55. Text 6 was 0.40. Text 7 was 0.42. Text 8 was 0.36. Text 9 was 0.44. Text 10 was 0.46. Text 11 was 0.44. Text 12 was 0.39. Text 13 was 0.38. Text 14 was 0.38. Text 15 was 0.42. Text 16 was 0.38. Text 17 was 0.46. Text 18 was 0.42. 2) The text had the highest GI was 4.00 within title Removing Lead from Petrol in hortatory exposition text and the text had the highest of LD was 0.56 within title Panda in report text. 3)The length of the sentence didn’t influence the grammatical intricacy of the text but the more clause complexes and content carrying lexical items could make the reader difficult to process the text. This study deals with the second year senior high school students’ in reading comprehension. The objective of the study was the investigation of the effect of Panel Discussion on the students’ in reading comprehension. The study was designed in experimental research. The population of this study was the 2015/2016 grade X students of SMA Swasta Dharmawangsa Medan. The total number of population of the study was 415 students which consist of 12 classes. The sample of the research was 60 students. The technique used for obtaining the sample was the cluster sampling technique. The sample classes were divided into two groups, namely the experimental group that was taught by applying Panel Discussion Technique, and the control group that was taught by applying classical Technique. The instrument for collecting data used objective test. The data were taken by administering the pre-test and post-test to both of experimental and control groups. The test was taken and selected from the National Examination test items that were related to the kind of narrative text. So, the validity and reliability of the test items were considered valid and reliable. The data were statistically analyzed by using t-test formula at the level of significance α (0.05) = 1.669 with the degree of freedom (df) = 65. It was found that the t-observed was higher than t-table (t-observed = 4.93 > t-table = 1.669; α = 0.05). It means that Panel Discussion Technique significantly affect the students’ achievement in reading comprehension. Keywords: Reading Comprehension, Cluster Sampling, Panel Discussion.

This study aimed to develop English reading materials needed for students of Cerdas Murni Islamic Junior High School through Authentic Material Approach (AMA).The objective of this study was to develop relevant English reading materials to the needs of Cerdas Murni Islamic Junior High School students especially eight grade . This study was conducted by Research and Development (R&D) design through six phases: 1) Collecting data, 2) Analyzing data, 3) Developing new materials, 4) Validating product 5) Revising materials, 6) final product. The data of this research were from the existing materials, syllabus, students’ questionnaire, and the teachers’ interview. The result of this research showed that the existing materials were not suitable to the Islamic school students’ needs.. Therefore, new English reading materials were developed through Authentic Material Approach (AMA) principles in order to meet the Islamic students’ needs. Furthermore, developing English reading materials were recount text. Recount text expose personal recount “Tarawih Changed his Life and the biographical recounts of Prophet Muhammad SAW and Shalahuddin Al-Ayyubi”. The English reading materials were validated by English teacher and English lecturer. Both of them agreed that new English reading materials were suitable with the Islamic school students’ needs. This study attempts to describe the conformity between reading materials in English on Sky 2 Textbook for grade VIII students’ of junior high school and the requirements of School-Based Curriculum in the aspects of indicators, text types, social function, rhetorical structure, and linguistic features. It was designed as documentary analysis in the form of descriptive qualitative research. The data of this study were reading materials collected from English on Sky 2 Textbook published by Erlangga in 2007. Based on the analysis of those aspects, it was found that the aspect of indicators gains 81.66% conformity, the aspect of Text types gains 66.66% conformity as the six text types required by School-based Curriculum are not all presented in the textbook, the aspect of social function gains 37.5 % conformity, moreover, the aspect of rhetorical structure gains 100% conformity, and the aspect of linguistic features gains 100% conformity. From the data obtained, the total conformity between the textbook and the requirements of School-based Curriculum attains 77.16% conformity. This number is categorized as good according to Nurgiyantoro’s Criterion Referenced Evaluation. Therefore, this textbook is appropriate to be used by both teachers and students in English language teaching, particularly in teaching reading as this textbook has already followed the instructions and the requirements of School-based Curriculum. This study is aimed to find out whether students pay more attention to picture, get information from picture and understanding the content of the text. It was conducted by using descriptive quantitative research. The source of the data was taken from the textbook entitled English in Focus published by Nur Ilmu, Yudhistira and students’ grade VIII of SMPN 3 Percut Sei Tuan. There are 9 classes of grade VIII which consists of 325 students, and VIII-1 was taken as the sample of this research. The data of this study were obtained from the students’ score of reading test. Based on the result of data analysis, it was found that the competence in predicting information through picture is very good. From 38 sample students, there were 21 students (55,3%) got very good score or can predict more than 5 details of information from the text, 15 students (39.5%) got good score or can predict less than 5 details of information from the text and only 2 students (5.2%) got bad score or predict less than 2 information. As well as their reading comprehension of the text with mean score 82.37 which is higher than the Minimal Completeness Criteria (KKM) of reading applied by SMPN 3 Percut Sei Tuan. It can be concluded that The result of this research is appropriate to the theory which claim that pictures are useful for getting students to predict what is coming next in a lesson and help the students comprehend the text easily.
