Abstract

This study aims to develop English writing assessment tasks of analytical exposition text for eleventh grade students of multimedia program at SMK Telkom Medan. This study was conducted by research and development (R & D) design through six phases; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing new writing assessment tasks, validating by experts, revising writing assessment tasks, and final product. The subject of this research was the eleventh grade students of multimedia program at SMK Telkom Medan. The instruments for collecting data were questionnaire and interview. The data were gathered by administering interview to the English teacher and distributing questionnaire to the eleventh grade students of multimedia program to get the students’ needs. The evaluators of the developed writing assessments were two experts namely an English lecturer and English teacher. The developed assessment in each task was authentic assessment that consists of three competences, such as, attitude competence, knowledge competence, and skill competence. The writing assessment tasks have been validated by experts. The average score are 3.6 based on the highest interval of numerical scale which was 4.00. In the form percentage, it got 91.3% so it was categorized “Very Good”. It means the developing English writing assessments are appropriate for the eleventh grade students of multimedia program at SMK Telkom Medan.  Keywords: Research and Development (R&D), Writing, Assessment Task, Analytical Exposition Text.

Abstract

This study is aimed at finding out the effect of Engage, Study, Activate technique on students’ achievement in writing narrative text. This research applied experimental design. The instrument used to collect the data was a written test. The population was the 2015/2016 second year students (grade VIII) of SMP N 1 Sei Rampah. There were nine paralel classes that consisted of 30 students. The total number of the population were 270 students. The total number of the sample were 60 students. The researcher selected the sample by choosing only 2 classes  by using sampling technique. The sample was divided into two groups, experimental group and control group. The experimental group was taught by applying Engage, Study, Activate technique while the control group was taught without applying Engage, Study, Activate technique. The data were taken by administering the pre-test and post-test to both control and experimental groups. These data were analyzed by using t-test. The result of computing the t-test obviously showed that t-observed (4.383) is higher than t-table (1.671) with the degree of freedom (df= 58) at the level significance 0.05 one tail test. It means that alternative hypothesis stating that there is a significant effect of Engage, Study, Activate technique on students’ achievement in writing narrative text is accepted. Abstract

This study was aimed at finding out the teacher written feedback focuses and purpose on students writing descriptive text at SMA Negeri 1 Tanah Jawa. This study used descriptive qualitative research design. The participants of this study were an English teacher and 36 students grade X of SMA Negeri 1 Tanah Jawa. In this research, the data source was the students’ descriptive text writing. It was collected after their writing was given written feedback by the teacher. The instruments for collecting data were documentation and interview. There are six focuses on teacher written feedback. The focuses are language form, text functions, content, creative expression, the writing process, and genre. Based on the analysis of the students’ writing, it is figured out that the teacher’s written feedback mostly focuses on language form namely grammar. Based on the interview, from six purposes namely provides information for both teacher and students, provides advice to the students, provides students language input, motivates the students, and leads students toward autonomy, the result showed that the teacher has been fullfiled all thoses purposes of written feedback.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out the pronunciation errors in long vowels in speaking test that have been made by the office administration and travel agency students  SMK Negeri 1 Binjai. It was conducted by using qualitative research. The sample of this stufy is 30 students which is from office administration and travel agency students. The instrument of this research is speaking test that recorded in each student. The results shown the total errors in office administration students are 103 while in travel agency students are 118. The percentage of the error of office administration class is 47% and the percentage of the error of travel agency class is 53%. It shown that their ability in speaking test is still low.  It was concluded that office administration students are better than travel agency students in speaking.Keywords: pronunciation error, long vowels, speaking test

Abstract

This study aims to find out how is the process of teaching learning descriptive text by using clustering technique for the eighth grade students of SMP Parulian 2 Medan. This study was conducted by using qualitative research. The data of this study were collected by using observation, interview, and survey. the result of observation, interiew, and survey prove that the use of clustering technique in teaching learning process of writing descriptive text was good percentage (83%) of the students were interested and followed every step in clustering technique, In the first step of clustering technique, the teacher introduced clustering technique and all students paid attention. All students  got 3 score (100%), it means 30 students participated well in the process of clustering technique. In the second step, the teacher showed the example of clustering technique and only some students who asked. All the students got 1 score (33,3%) it means only 10 students asked in the process of clustering technique, In the third step, the teacher led the students to generate idea in form of clustering technique. All students focused to generate the idea based on the teacher’s directions in form of clustering technique. All students got 3 score (100%), all the 30 students participated well in the process of clustering technique, in the forth step the teacher asked the students to write the first draft based on the design of clustering technique. All students wrote their own descriptive text using clustering technique based on the teacher direction and the example that had been given by the teacher. All the students got 3 score (100%). From this result, the researcher concludes that both teacher and students participated well in the process of teaching learning descriptive text by using clustering technique for the eighth grade students of SMP Parulian 2 Medan.

Abstract

This study was aimed to describe the English Teaching Methods in writing descriptive text and the problems faced by the teacher. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research design. The subject of this research was an English teacher of SMK NEGERI 1 Pulau Rakyat. The techniques of collecting data were by observing the process of teaching writing comprehension of descriptive text at X Grade students and interviewing the English teacher. The techniques of collecting data were observation and interview. This study found that the teacher at SMK NEGERI 1 Pulau Rakyat used the method in teaching writing descriptive text. The English teacher used the lecture method and discussion method to teach in the descriptive text and the students get difficulties in comprehending the material. The application lecture method and discussion method is not appropriate with scientific approach of 2013 Curriculum. The result and response from the students to the teacher’s method are still not effective. The teacher should not apply the methods in written but also in spoken. And the problems faced by the teacher were the first is about the lack of students’ vocabularies, and the second is about the students’ participations when work in group. This study also found that the teacher’s methods not integrated with the scientific approach of 2013 Curriculum. The implementation of methods in teaching writing  should can make teaching learning process more interesting and help the students’ understanding and skill of writing comprehension better.Key words: Teaching Method, Writing, Descriptive Text.

Abstract

ABSTRACT   This study concerns on improving students’ achievement in writing analytical exposition text through guided writing technique. This research was conducted by using action research method. The subject of the study was class XI IA-1 students of SMA Negeri 17 Medan, which consisted of 36 students. The research was conducted in two cycles, which each cycle consisted of three treatments. The instruments for collecting data were quantitative data (analytical exposition writing assessment) and qualitative data (diary notes, interview sheet, observation sheet, and questionnaire sheet). Based on the students’ scores, students’ writing skill kept improving in every assessment given. The mean of the students’ score for the first competence as orientation test was 68, 12, the second competence test was 71,93, the third competence test was 79,87, and the total percentage of the improvement from the first competence test to the third competence test was 93,7%. Based on diary notes, observation sheet, questionnaire sheet, and interview report, it was found that the teaching-learning process ran well. The students were active, interested, and enthusiastic in writing. The results indicated that Guided Writing Technique improved the students’ writing achievement in analytical exposition text.   Keywords: students’ achievement, writing, analytical exposition text, guided writing technique

Abstract

This research was aimed to develop suitable English reading materials for the eleventh grade students of Maritime Department of SMK Pelayaran Samudera Indonesia. Due to the result of this research was in the form of a product, this research was categorized as Research and Development (R & D) which adapted Borg and Gall (2003) theory with some modifications. The subjects of this research were the eleventh grade students of Maritime Department of SMK Pelayaran Samudera Indonesia. In conducting this research, the procedures were gathering the data and information, conducting the need analysis, designing the first draft of materials, validating by the expert, revising the materials, and producing the final product. The instruments of collecting the data were the combination of two strategies; interview and questionnaires. The interview was analyzed as qualitative data and the questionnaires were analyzed as quantitative data. These data were the needs of students which covered target needs and learning needs. This research only focused on developing two genres of English reading materials based on KTSP that were taught in the second semester which were procedure and analytical exposition. Keywords: English Reading Materials, English for Specific Purposes, Research & Development (R & D), Maritime Department.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out whether the application Preview, Read, Write, and Recite (PRWR) method improve student’s achievement in reading recount text. This research applied classroom action research model. This study was done in six meetings. The subject of this study was first year of SMAN 1 Delitua. Primary data were collected by giving 20 questions of multiple-choice test, the aspects contained in the tests focused on generic structure, main ideas, factual information, and Secondary data were collected by (interview, observation sheet, and questionnaire sheet. Based on analysis data, it was found that the student’s achievement improved. It could be seen from the comparison of result in the orientation test and the cycle test I and II. There were only 9 students who had passed minimum criteria KKM in orientation test (75). The improvement showed that in cycle I and II, based on the total average score it was 16 (42,4%) up to 26 (78,7%) in cycle II, The secondary data gathered from interview, observation sheet, and questionnaire sheet, showed that students’ expression and enthusiastic also improved. Thus, it was found that the applications of Preview, Read, Write, and Recite (PRWR) method in process of teaching improved students’ achievement in reading recount text. It is suggested that English teachers apply PRWR method in teaching reading recount text. Abstract

This study was aimed to describe the use of Edmodo in teaching speaking in mastering interpersonal dialogue in MAN 3 Langkat. The participant of this reserach was Students of grade eleventh in Science class of MAN 3 Langkat. The technique of collecting data used was observation,interview and test. In blended learning, there were two activities which consist of online learning activities which were done using Edmodo and traditional face to face activities which were done in the class. There were five components of speaking they were Organization, Fluency, Pronunciation, Vocabulary, and Performance. The research finding found that Edmodo could help the students to improve their speaking ability especially asking and giving opinion. And then, the result of students’ speaking belongs to good category. Generally, students give the positive response toward the implementation of Edmodo for teaching speaking in asking and giving opinion. Keywords : Edmodo, Blended Learning, Teaching Speaking
