Abstract

This study aims to examine the meaning and function of Pegon inscriptions on the first gate of the complex of Sunan Bejagung Lor's Tomb. The Pegon inscriptions are of significant size and contain advice or guidance. This qualitative research is based on a symbolic interactionism approach. Data is collected through interviews, field observations, and literature review. The research reveals that the Pegon inscriptions primarily serve as sengkalan for the numerals at the end of each sentence. They are also perceived as valuable advice by the local community, who view them as the wise words of the sunan. The gate was constructed in 1896 by Tuban regent, Raden Toemenggoeng Koesoemodikdo, not Sunan Bejagung's disciples. This research enriches our understanding of the history and culture of Sunan Bejagung Lor's Tomb and sheds light on the significance of the Pegon inscriptions on the gate.

Abstract

A historian of Kurdish origin, Idris Bidlisi (1457-1520), is undoubtedly one of the most important intellectuals in the Ottoman-Iranian borderland in the late-fifteenth and early-sixteenth centuries. Although his Persian and Arabic works have been the focus of long-standing historical debates, there are as yet few proper, in-depth textual and critical editions. This is particularly true regarding Bidlisis Persian history of the first eight Ottoman sultans called Hast Bihist (The Eight Paradises) and especially its unpublished Book VI. This paper provides an editio princeps of Bidlisis Arabic prefatory poem to Book VI and its English translation.

Abstract

The phrase "Sheikh Abdurrauf is in the same tribe as Hamzah Fansuri" in the Cirebon tripe manuscript sparked debate among researchers regarding the relationship between Sheikh Abdurrauf and Hamzah Fansuri. This debate became interesting because a collective memory was found among the people of Singkil Aceh, who believed that there was a nephew-uncle and student-teacher relationship between them. Collective memory is strengthened by two sites, which are the graves of Sheikh Ali Al Fanshuri (father of Sheikh Abdurrauf) and his younger brother, Sheikh Hamzah Fansuri, in two areas in Singkil. Through critical analysis of literature and in-depth exploration of collective memory and sites, the author concludes that the two of them had a familial relationship as nephew and uncle, and they even had a student and teacher relationship at the beginning of Sheikh Abdurrauf's education

Abstract

The aim of this research is to understand the history of the islāḥ al-Gazālī movement and its relevance to the concept of contemporary education. This research method is qualitative-descriptive, using library research techniques and historical and sociological approaches. The findings indicate that al-Gazālī started the islāḥ movement by repairing himself first. Further, al-Gazāli diagnosed the problems faced by the Islamic community and found that the quality of society, good or bad, depended on the knowledge and credibility of scholars. Based on this diagnosis, al-Gazālī took improvement measures by including: producing a new generation of scholars and educators; designing educational systems and curricula in accordance with Islamic principles; reviving the mission of al-‘amr bi al-ma’rūf wa al-nahyī ‘an al-munkar; and fighting for social justice. Al-Gazālī's thoughts and actions played a crucial role in the process of reform and renewal in society, which produced the generation of Ṣalāḥuddīn al-Ayyūbī through reform of thought and education. In today's context, al-Gazālī's thought and movement suggest that the problem of Islam needs to be overcome from its root, namely "moral reform". The role of the scholar and the leader of the people are the two main elements that support the survival of the people, and both of these aspects should get serious attention.

Abstract

This paper explores the role of criticism in historical research, emphasizing the careful evaluation of historical evidence to assess reliability. By examining both primary and secondary sources, this paper delves into the intricacies of critical analysis, focusing on the distinction between external and internal criticism. External criticism assesses the authenticity and origin of a document, examining factors such as authorship, date, and context to ensure its genuineness. On the other hand, internal criticism involves content analysis, interpreting the meaning behind the text, and evaluating the author’s intent, biases, and reliability. The paper uses the historical source Tārīkh al-Khulafā’ by Jalal al-Dīn ‘Abd al-Raḥmān al-Ṣuyūṭī, a prominent 10th-century Islamic scholar, as a case study to illustrate these critical approaches. Through a thorough examination of al-Ṣuyūṭī’s work, the paper highlights the significance of understanding the broader implications of historical narratives while also scrutinizing the specific content for accuracy and intent. The critical evaluation of Tārīkh al-Khulafā’ reveals the complexities involved in historical research, showcasing how historians can navigate biases, omissions, and the reliability of sources to construct accurate historical narratives. This study clarifies its theoretical aspects by providing a comprehensive understanding of historical research criticism. It demonstrates its practical application, underscoring its essential function in ensuring the integrity and accuracy of historical inquiry.

Abstract

Islam in Ethiopia has a profound impact as one of the streams of its long history. It has been present in the country for almost one and a half millennia. It was first introduced to Axum in northern Ethiopia in AD 615, also referred to as the ‘first hijra’, followed by the subsequent expansions to Shoa in central and eastern Ethiopia through Dahlak and Zeila ports since the 9th century AD. The main agents of these expansions were caravan traders and refugees. Coinciding with such intensified trade and the Islamisation process, eastern Africa witnessed the emergence and consolidation of several Muslim principalities, including in modern-day Ethiopia, from the 11th century AD onwards. Fedis, as one of those principalities within modern-day Ethiopia, was mentioned in Amde Seyon’s chronicle in the 14th century AD. However, Islamic history and archaeology in Ethiopia remain understudied until recently. As part of this negligence, Fedis site has never been studied until the completion of this research. Inspired by its historical mentions and an old map revealing several ruins of settlement sites south of Harar, the researchers conducted a preliminary survey of this particular site in 2021 and 2022. Accordingly, various remains were identified from Fedis that confirmed the site’s archaeological potential. During the fieldwork, ruins of an elaborate stone-built defensive wall, a succession of mosques, a stepwell, carnelian-made seal carved with Arabic text, beads of various kinds, storage pits of different sizes and burials were the findings explored, among many others. As confirmed from these findings, this pilot research sheds new and first archaeological insight into the medieval Islamic site of Fedis in eastern Ethiopia.

Abstract

This article discusses the role of Sufism, particularly the Idrisiyyah Order, in promoting religious moderation in the contemporary Islamic era. This research employs a library research method, collecting and analyzing written sources from books, scholarly journals, articles, and official documents. The data collected includes literature on Sufism, the Idrisiyyah Order, and religious moderation in contemporary Islam. The approach combines sociological and religious perspectives, aiming to understand how the Idrisiyyah Order contributes to modern society and how Sufi teachings and the values of religious moderation are applied in daily life. Using the literature study method, this research explores how the teachings of the Idrisiyyah Order, founded by Ahmad Ibnu Idris al-Fasi, emphasize the principles of love, tolerance, and spirituality. This order emerged as a response to the radicalism and extremism prevalent in today's society. The Idrisiyyah Order is crucial in shaping moderate attitudes through educational approaches, community economic development, and strengthening social networks in Indonesia. These Sufi teachings focus on purifying the heart and spreading compassion, contributing to rejecting violence and intolerance. In this way, the Idrisiyyah Order helps create a more harmonious and peaceful society, demonstrating that spiritual teachings can significantly address contemporary social challenges. This study provides insight into how spiritual approaches can effectively promote moderation and tolerance in Islam
