Abstract

This quantitative study investigates the impact of singing songs on English as a Second Language vocabulary acquisition. Sixty Indonesian ESL learners were randomized into experimental and control groups, with the experimental group engaging in singing activities while the control group followed traditional instruction. Pre-test and post-test assessments in vocabulary, pronunciation, and translation were completed. The experimental group showed substantial gains across all metrics, including a 15.3 point vocabulary increase, 2.3 point pronunciation improvement, and 5.8 point translation enhancement (all p<0.001). Outcomes align with prior research on singing for language learning and support incorporating singing into ESL teaching to actively engage learners and improve linguistic skills. Limitations include short-term analysis and adult-focused sampling. Recommendations are longitudinal research, diverse participants, qualitative inquiries into experiences, and continued singing technique optimization.

Abstract

Online learning has become essential for continuing education, and the TOEFL exam, a subject well-suited for virtual instruction, has seamlessly transitioned to online platforms to facilitate uninterrupted learning. This research investigates students’ preferences for virtual TOEFL instruction and the challenges encountered during online classes. It surveyed 83 students from four faculties at UIN Raden Intan Lampung, using questionnaires and interviews to collect data. Results showed mixed views on TOEFL learning methods: while some students preferred online over offline learning, others were ambivalent. Almost half (49.4%) were neutral on whether online learning improves focus, while 31.1% had mixed views, with 15.7% agreeing and 15.4% disagreeing. These varied perspectives underscore the complexity of learning preferences and the need for tailored language acquisition strategies. Interviews further indicated a preference for offline learning, primarily due to issues with internet connectivity and home distractions affecting TOEFL comprehension.

Abstract

The Kaili language, spoken by the majority in Central Sulawesi, is in a critical condition, with a declining number of speakers, especially among students. Consequently, revitalization efforts are needed, particularly at the elementary and middle school levels in Palu City. This study aims to explore the process of revitalizing the Kaili language among these students. A qualitative research method was employed, with data collected through visits to several elementary and junior high schools in Palu City. Interviews with school principals were conducted and recorded using a cellphone. The findings indicate that the revitalization of the Kaili language among students in Palu City has not yet achieved optimal results. However, initiatives by the schools, the Central Sulawesi Language Center, and the Palu City government are gradually fostering students' willingness and interest in learning the Kaili language.

Abstract

This study examines the language styles used in netizens’ posts and comments on social media during the 2024 Presidential Election (Pilpres). Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the research analyzes primary data in the form of written social media content and secondary data from relevant literature, utilizing orthographic and referential matching techniques. Among the 100 instances of hate speech identified, 30 distinct language styles were observed, with sarcasm (50 occurrences), hyperbole (30 occurrences), irony (20 occurrences), and rhetoric (10 occurrences) being the most prevalent. These language styles reflect expressions of dissatisfaction, anger, and criticism, while also capturing public attention. Sarcasm and irony effectively convey sharp satire, hyperbole introduces dramatic emphasis, and rhetoric evokes emotional reactions. The findings reveal that social media serves as a platform for political opinion contests, where language style functions as a strategic tool to construct narratives and influence public perception persuasively.

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether the Task-based Learning (TBL) strategy can improve the speaking skills of 11th-grade students at MAN 2 Palu City. Using quantitative methods with a quasi-experimental design, the study involved 428 students as the population. The sample was selected purposively, with XI MIPA 1 serving as the experimental group and XI MIPA 3 as the control group. The research instrument consisted of pre-tests and post-tests. The results indicate a significant improvement in students' speaking skills after implementing TBL, as the t-value (4.092) exceeded the t-critical value (1.996) at a significance level of 0.05 with df=67. The hypothesis was accepted, confirming that TBL is effective in enhancing students' speaking abilities. Thus, this strategy can be applied as a teaching approach to foster speaking skill development.

Abstract

This study examines errors in Indonesian usage in public spaces in Palu City, focusing on non-standard language, grammatical inaccuracies, spelling, and punctuation. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through observation and documentation, analyzed with Krippendorf's content analysis model. The findings reveal 69 errors, including 40 prefix, 15 suffix, 10 preposition, 3 title, and 1 word usage errors. The most frequent issue was incorrect "di" prefix usage. Errors stem from two main factors: lack of awareness of language rules and low linguistic knowledge in the community. These mistakes risk negatively influencing the younger generation by normalizing incorrect usage. The study emphasizes the need for increased education and socialization to promote proper Indonesian language use, fostering greater awareness and adherence to linguistic standards.
