This research aims at finding out the human value of Banyumas people as expressed in Babad Pasir. To achieve this aim, the history method is employed in four steps, (1) heuristic, (2) criticism, (3) interpretation, and (4) historiography. The historical facts which are interpreted are those mental ones so that the resulting historiography reflects Banyumanese ideas as the realization of the Banyumas cultural value system. The results of the research show that Babad Pasir tends to presents internal conflicts, while Babad Banyumas is marked more with ascetism. However, both of them show a paradox between positive and negative values. The relation between the positive values as the thesis and negative ones as the antithesis results in a synthesis in the form of cablaka (straightforwardness) as the value system of the Banyumas culture. Based on the system it can be seen that the orientation of the value is toward both traditional and modern society. Banyumas people tend to look at the past, but have the ability to see the future as a reference in facing the challenging world.

Javanese terms of address in the Yogyakarta palace are connected with the sociocultural aspects of the palace community. The terms of address reflect a power and solidarity in face-to-face verbal interaction either directly or indirectly. The Javanese in the Yogyakarta palace (JYP or basa bagongan) differs from the standard Javanese (SJ), especially in the first personal pronoun ‘I’. In JYP the speakers use manira, while in SJ the speakers use kula. Besides, there is a difference in the second personal pronoun ‘you’, that is, in JYP they use pakenira, while in SJ they use sampeyan or panjenengan. This study of the JYP terms of address also suggests at least three linguistic rules, i.e. alternation rules, co-occurence rules, and collocation rules. Alternation rules deal with the selection of terms of address which matches age, sex, marrital status, formality, kinship relation, and intimacy.

The Banyuwangi folksongs, which from theoretical perspective are an expression of the culture of Using people. The folksongs are cultural product of the Using ethnic, which is a result of the interaction of the Using people with their natural and social-cultural surroundings. As a cultural product, the utterance of this folksongs has distinct characteristics. The variety of vocabulary in an utterance reflects the dynamics on communication and social life of its speakers. The differences of cultural content in the vocabulary of the utterance are caused by the differences in the strategy of adaptation and perception pattern of the people towards the natural and social-cultural environment. For a language which does not have hierarchy of register, the utterance style of that language is used by its speakers as politeness strategy to distinguish the social classes in speech.

In a post-modern culture and society, literary comparative studies need to offer a new paradigm. In addition to finding similarities between national literatures, they also need to consider their differences. This paper attempt to investigate some possible differences between Pramoedya Anantatur’s novel entitled Mereka yang Dilumpuhkan and that of Samad Ismail entitled Tembok Tidak Tinggi. The results show that both novels have different perspectives in describing and signifying ‘prison’. The former novel deals with it from a philosophical perspective while the latter from an ethical one.
