Abstract

Teacher professional development (TPD) is not only an ongoing process that contributes towards individual growth of teachers but also an integral element in school improvement. This paper reports the Zambian secondary school teachers’ perceptions of their continuous professional development in teacher engagement in CPD activities, perceived importance of different CPD programs/activities, needs to be focused on future training, and barriers using quantitative data. A self-created questionnaire was distributed to 700 conveniently selected secondary school teachers from four schools. The data was examined using descriptive statistics such as frequency of responses, mean scores, and standard deviation, as well as the t-test of independent samples for comparing the perspectives of respondents from different categories. From the findings, teachers were moderately engaged in TPD programs/activities and perceived developing teaching and learning materials as highly important. The impact of their perceptions was evident as there was no significant difference between female and male perceptions about their engagement in teacher CPD programs. Thus, the importance of recognizing and addressing teachers' perceptions of CPD is argued in this study because teachers play an important role in how they learn and how their perceptions impact the changes they make in their teaching practice.

Abstract

This study investigated the influence of educational leadership on students’ academic performance in secondary schools. The researcher applied the descriptive research design, which allowed the in-depth study of the influence of educational leadership on students’ academic performance. The study population included 109 respondents, which comprised Heads of Schools (HoSs), Secondary Schools’ Academic Masters, discipline masters, and Ward Educational Officers (WEO). The study used a simple random and purposive sampling technique to select a sample size of 52 respondents. The researcher collected data through questionnaires. The data was analyzed by Ms-word and Ms-Excel and presented using tables. The Chi-square test and the T-test were employed in testing the association between leadership styles and students’ academic performance. The findings established that democratic leadership styles mostly influence students’ academic performance (R-value=0.932), implying that there is a strong and positive significant influence of democratic leadership styles on students’ academic achievement at a p = 0.004 level. For the laissez-faire leadership style, the relationship revealed an insignificant negative influence on students’ academic performance with a very weak relationship (R-value of 0.1) and was not significant (p = 0.072). Also, in the autocratic leadership style, although the relationship was moderate (R = 0.546), the relationship was insignificant with a p-value of 0.08. The results show that most school leaders prefer the use of democratic leadership style. The study recommends that head teachers should mostly use democratic leadership style if they want students to achieve or excel in good academic performance.

Abstract

This study examines the applied strategies of para teacher in developing the English language phonemic awareness of a first grader in the context of modular distance learning delivery modality. To develop such awareness, students should be able to master the tasks such as (1) phoneme isolation, (2) phoneme identity (3) phoneme deletion, (4) phoneme segmentation, (5) phoneme categorization, and (6) phoneme blending. This study concentrates on how the para teacher addresses all the six components of phonemic awareness and explores whether there are any additional elements that should be considered with English learners’ phonemic awareness development. In this case study, data were collected through semi-structured interviews, field notes from modular instruction observation, and phonemic awareness assessment results. The results from this case study imply that systematic teaching strategies are essential to consider with English learners’ phonemic awareness development. The findings of this study also disclosed that both para teacher and learner’s motivation is an essential component in teaching and learning phonemic awareness.

Abstract

The average postgraduate student in Ghana has about 20 years exposure in English language, having been taught and instructed in English from primary to tertiary level. It is, therefore, not far-fetched to expect the postgraduate student to commit minimal to no errors in their L2 writings. The seeming consequential minimal scholarly attention on errors in postgraduate writings regardless of the many studies on students’ errors is therefore not surprising. This study is an attempt to identify, categorise and describe the errors in postgraduate dissertations in Ghana and highlight its implications for language teaching. This exploratory qualitative study carries out a content analysis of 20 randomly selected MA, MPhil and PhD dissertations published between 2020 and 2021. The data are analysed using the theory of Error Analysis. After critically assessing the dissertations, seven (7) categories of concord errors were identified and recorded. These are; subject-verb concord errors, inverted subject concord errors, concord errors associated with ‘has’ and ‘have’, determiner-noun errors, concord errors on numbers, noun-pronoun antecedent errors and compound subject concord errors. This implies that postgraduate students are prone to errors, hence, the need to introduce or intensify the teaching of English at the postgraduate level.

Abstract

All students, regardless of gender, race, colour, ethnic or social origin, genetic traits, language, religion or belief, political or other opinions, participation in a national minority, property, birth, or disability, everyone has the right to an equitable education (Klironomos et al., 2006), and to be considered as being an integral part of the learning community. To view Universal Access to Education as a concrete and attainable goal, teachers must be aware of the ICT potential and be able to acquire the necessary knowledge and operational skills to select and use ICT as an appropriate and promising tool for promoting equity in educational opportunities by assisting children with special needs in overcoming barriers to learning, thereby increasing their school achievement, as well as their autonomy and willingness to learn. The paper highlighted the definition of ICT, types of ICT items and how ICT is being used and describe the benefits of ICT to students with special needs.
