The purpose of TELL-US Journal is to promote the wide dissemination of the results of systematic scholarly inquiries into the broad field of English research. TELL-US Journal is intended to be the journal for publishing articles reporting the results of research on English. The TELL-US Journal invites manuscripts within spectrum: English Language Teaching General English Studies Linguistics (Language Studies) Literature (Literary Studies) Usage The TELL-US Journal accepts articles in any English related subjects and any research methodology that meet the standards established for publication in the journal. The primary, but not exclusive, audiences are academicians, graduate students, practitioners, and others interested in English research. Discussions on the latest issues in relation to the above topics are the main spectrum of this journal. Research articles, book reviews, or annotated bibliography are welcomed to be published in this journal. All topics need to be the factual and discussed among the scholars in the field of English language and literature or English Education. The primary criterion for publication in TELL-US Journal is the significance of the contribution an article makes to the literature , i.e., the significance of the contribution and on the rigor of analysis and presentation of the paper. The acceptance decision is made based upon an independent review process that provides critically constructive and prompt evaluations of submitted manuscripts.

Abstract

Penulisan ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan dan menjelaskan kesantunan penolakan pada film Penelope. Pendekatan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah pendekatan kualitatif dengan jenis penelitian deksriptif. Sumber data penelitian adalah film Penelope (2006). Penelitian ini dilakukan melalui tiga tahap, yaitu: pengumpulan data, analisis data, dan penyajian hasil analisis data. Pada pengumpulan data, data dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan metode simak. Metode ini dilanjutkan dengan teknik simak bebas libat cakap, teknik rekam dan teknik catat. Setalah data dikumpulkan, data dianalisis dengan menggunakan metoda padan pragmatis dan metode agih. Selanjutnya, hasil analisis data disajikan dengan menggunakan metode formal dan informal. da tiga jenis kalimat kesantunan penolakan yang ditemukan yaitu: kalimat deklaratif, kalimat interogatif dan kalimat imperatif.

Abstract

This article aims to describe the forms of kinship term in Minangkabau language used by society in NagariSimawang. The data are collected by using questionnaire, interview, cross check, elicitation, recording, and note taking. In addition, non-participant observation is also used to collect the data of using address terms in a conversation. In analyzing the data, content analysis method is used by sorting and classifying data based on the type or category of address terms theory through the systems of kinship relation in Minangkabau culture. The results of analysisshow the characteristic of Minangkabau culture in using address term such as a form of kinship term, kinship terms which are added by pronouns and adjectivc, and also titles only. Keywords:address term, kinship term, minangkabau language, kinship system in minangkabau culture

Abstract

This research investigated students’ belief on learning English as a foreign language at Social Science Department of STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat. Based on the learner-centered approaches to foreign language teaching, it is important for teacher to understand about students’ prior knowledge and experiences, expectations, and attitudes towards language learning. Belief as part of attitude can influence students’ way of thinking, feeling, or making sense of the learning process. Thus, the teachers need to know about students’ belief. The purpose was to find what beliefs about language learning do Social Science Department students hold? The methodology of research is descriptive quantitative research. It describes the phenomena about students’ belief in the field. This study examines all students in Social Science Department of STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat which totally 10 students. The data were taken form a questionnaire. The findings of the research showed that English subject in campus is not enough for students to develop their English ability. However, they belief that they have a special ability in learning English. The results also showed that some students have belief which in learning English students have to know the culture of the native speaker, have good grammar, pronunciation and practice regularly.

Abstract

Learning English cannot be separated from reading skills. Explanatory text is one type of English text in reading skills. This text introduces students to natural events or phenomena that are often studied by students of natural science programs. The purpose of this study is to improve the students' ability to read explanatory texts with a scientific approach using video. This study used classroom action research with cycle stages consisting of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The data collection techniques used were observation with field notes, documents, and written tests. Findings suggest that the scientific approach using video improved the students' skills to read explanatory texts. It was proved that the average result of the pre-cycle was 70 and the average result of the first cycle was 75.

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to find out what kinds and the causes of errors are made by the students of the Fourth semester of the English department of university in using gerund. This method used descriptive qualitative method. The writer used optional test about gerund (gerund as subject, direct object, and after preposition) as the instrument. The sampling technique that was used in this research was random. The writer took thirty students as sample. The data was analyzed by description about the error each item. The findings of this research are by analyzing the students’ test about using gerund. And the second is this research covered three main categories of gerund are: gerund as subject, gerund as direct object and gerund after preposition.After the researcher had done the research, the researcher got the conclusion that the result of all test showed the comprehensible of the gerund in the fourth semester is very poor. Second, the result of errors in using gerund as subject is 25.7 %. Third, the result of errors of using gerund as direct object is 36.7 %. Fourth, The result of errors of using gerund after preposition is 38.3%.Then, based on percentage, errors of using of gerunds after preposition occupy the highest rank. Occupying the second rank is errors of using gerund as object. The lowest rank is errors of using gerund as subject. Almost the errors occurred It is because they still do not understand how to use and put gerund.Key words: error analysis, Gerund, and the fourth semester students‘ability.

Abstract

This research was conducted to know the kind of commissive and act the analysis of the three acts which are locution, illocution and perlocution could be found in the interview of Tim Cook in Oxford University. This research was a qualitative research. The source of data that used in this research was a video of an interview while the data which would be analyzed were utterances of the speakers in the interview. The research result was showed that there were two forms of commissive act that can be found in the interview which are promise and volunteering acts. From the result, it can be concluded that the use of promise act form was mostly act used during the interview of Tim Cook in Oxford University. This form was used by the interviewer when giving instruction during the interview or when asking question to Tim. Meanwhile the volunteering form was used when Tim volunteering himself to give an example to the audience of the interview.

Abstract

The role of literature today is not only as an imaginative work but as an expression of social, cultural and political criticism. One of the writers who is famous for voicing his criticism of the social phenomena that occur in Indonesia is Putu Wijaya. Two of his short stories that discuss cultural values are Balikui and Aids. The focus of this research is on the identity that appears in the characters in the two short stories by utilizing Michael Foucault's theory of discourse analysis. The results of this study indicate that in the Balikui short story, the identity of the character Wayan cannot be melted, even though he is in America for a few weeks as in disciplining time. In the short story Aids, it shows the existence of Indonesian cultural identity that corruption is a plague that is more dangerous than Aids.

Abstract

Students at English Departement, Letters Faculty, The University of Pamulang get one subject namely English-Indonesian translation at the fourth semester. In studying translation, all English knowledge and skills (Listening, Speaking, Reading dan Writing) are required to get the translation result satisfied to readers. However, there are lots of problems faced by the students which are caused by grammar and other related factors in translation. The process of translation begins with skimming in  a reading texts (Source Language=SL) until to get the main idea of the text. The students often think that careful reading is wasting of time so that they tend to try to find unfamiliar words in the dictionary straight away. This article is trying to recognize potential grammatical errors faced by a student and identify the types of errors made by the fourth semester students of the English Department,  Letters Faculty of the University of Pamulang at the periode of 2012/2013.

Abstract

This research aims at exploring the linguistic features employed by advertisers in Cosmopolitan Magazine beauty product advertisements. The study mainly focuses on the use of language in beauty product advertisements and the strategies employed by the advertisers in shaping the ideal concept of women’s beauty. This research is conducted under the theory of Critical Discourse Analysis proposed by Fairclough that focuses on a conception of discourse as text (micro level), discourse practice (meso level) and sociocultural practice (macro level). Its aim is to explore the relationships among language, ideology and power and to find out how advertisers persuade the women to buy their products. The result shows that there are some linguistic features employed by the advertisers i.e. positive and negative adjective, pronouns, imperatives, and modality. Meanwhile the strategies employed are positive-self representation, irrational representation, celebrity endorsement, and clinical test proof

Abstract

This research identifies the kinds of affixes, the process and the function of affixation in Javanese Language uttered by Purwobakti villagers. This research used descriptive qualitative method.Data were gained through participating technique, recording technique, and writing technique. The results of this research show that there are five kinds of prefixes include {ng-}, {di-}, {ben-}, {ke-}, and {ny-}. The five kinds of suffixes include {-e}, {-ne}, {-an}, {-ane}, and {-en}, and infix that is {-cici-}. The process of affixes in this research includes derivational and inflectional affixation. The affixes have function of forming noun, verb, adjective, adverb, and numeric.
