Abstract

This article discusses the perspective of transhumanism and the Christian view of human genetic engineering and the right to life. In this context, there is a gap in thinking between technology and theology. Transhumanism encourages the use of genetic engineering to improve the quality of human life. One of transhumanism's endeavours in the field of biotechnology is genetic engineering to create quality humans by directly manipulating or modifying the genetic material (DNA) of an organism. Meanwhile, Christianity emphasises that creation and the right to life are gifts from God that must be guarded and respected. This research uses a literature study method to explore the origin of humans, the use of genetic engineering, its social impact, and the church's attitude towards transhumanism. The findings show that the use of genetic engineering on humans gives rise to a conflict between human intervention and the will of God, as well as the potential for complex social impacts. Especially when confronted with human identity as a creation, not a creator. The church's response varies but reflects an attempt to mediate the gap between technology and religious belief, often with an emphasis on ethical principles. However, this study will delve deeper into the theory of creation aimed at answering the question of human intervention in God's creation as creator through human genetic engineering. Strengthening this research, therefore, is the need for an in-depth and perspective dialogue between science, religion, and society.

Abstract

This article aims to examine the role of the church in responding to, protecting, and valuing human life, particularly for individuals with disabilities, to ensure that they are not marginalized in church life. The church has a responsibility to ensure that every member of the congregation, including those with disabilities, is treated equally without discrimination. Therefore, it is essential for the church to take concrete steps in creating a warm and inclusive church environment where all members receive fair and compassionate treatment. In this study, the author employs a qualitative research method by analyzing various sources such as books and journals to understand how the church can contribute to raising awareness of the value of life for individuals with disabilities. The study emphasizes that people with disabilities have the same inherent value as others and deserve to be respected. No member of the congregation should be favored or neglected, as before God, every human being holds equal worth.

Abstract

The problems experienced by ulos weavers are currently quite concerning. The inequality of the Ulos weavers in Sipoholon Subdistrict, North Tapanuli Regency, face inequality in selling prices that are not proportional to the results and work time. Exploitation by agents who offer low prices is further exacerbated by limited market access and reduced buyers due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has a negative impact on the fulfillment of daily needs. This research discusses the impact of price inequality and exploitation on the lives of weavers and the role of the church in overcoming it. Using qualitative methods through literature studies by collecting library data, reading and recording and processing data objectively, systematically, analyzing and critically about ulos cloth weavers in North Tapanuli, especially the Sipoholon sub-district. he results show that Christian theology itself states that justice is important. The church needs to play an active role to fulfill its vocation to give “good news” to the oppressed weavers by helping to release them from the shackles of exploitation through a prophetic diaconal approach that focuses on liberation theology.

Abstract

This research concludes that Christian education has an important role in the public sphere. As a continuation of Christ's work to make disciples, schools, churches, and families also play a role in continuing the task of Christian education as partners with God. Each party certainly serves according to its respective callings, and as partners of God. The role of Christian education in public spaces includes shepherding students in forming Christian spirituality in society, encouraging the creation of social action, contributing to integrating God's word into society, and encouraging them to be actively involved in civil government or contributing to the country's development agenda. The theological thoughts used in this article include Abraham Kuyper, John Calvin, Martin Luther, Thomas à Kempis, John Owen, and a number of theologians in this century. This research is a type of qualitative research using the literature study method.

Abstract

Abstract

This research shows how films can influence someone's way of life. Documentaries, as a storytelling medium, are complex agents of change, embedded in real communities, real lives, and real stories. Because documentaries relate directly to the human social world, watching them involves complex cognitive, psychological, emotional, social and political processes. Therefore, documentaries are a powerful medium for stimulating discussion, reflection and behavior change. This article explores the power of visual narrative and positive media representation as a form of interreligious para social relational dialogue. This article also dives into its practical applications while providing best practices that filmmakers can use to harness this power, as well as reviewing the literature on the social, cognitive, and neurobiological impacts that documentaries may have. This interdisciplinary theory of cognitive-sociological change places documentary films as a tool for increasing interreligious competence because of their unique ability to convey visual stories with interesting characters, thereby creating humanizing experiences and reflectively changing perceptions.

Abstract

This article aims to examine the social experience of people living with HIV and AIDS (ODHA) through a socio-rhetoric interpretation of Mark 5:25-34. Using a socio-rhetoric approach, this article interprets the biblical text that tells the story of a woman who suffered bleeding for twelve years and was shunned by the community as a relevance of the experience of ODHA who are often marginalized and stigmatized. Findings show that the story reflects the social suffering experienced by ODHA and how Jesus modeled inclusive love and unconditional acceptance of marginalized individuals. This study proposes that ODHA can draw inspiration from this text to build an enthusiastic attitude in the healing process. The expected source of healing is the collaboration between the community and ODHA. The findings provide ethical insights in responding to the stigma against ODHA in Christian society.

Abstract

This paper discusses the meaning and importance of Christmas celebrations in the context of the liturgical year as the beginning of the pilgrimage of faith for Christians. The liturgical year includes a series of events that commemorate the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, with Christmas as one of the important celebrations. Using a descriptive-analytical qualitative method, this research collected data through literature study and observation. The results show that Christmas is more than just a religious celebration; Christmas as a one of the celebrations in the liturgical year marks the beginning of a pilgrimage of faith and reminds people of Jesus’s promise of salvation. The research highlights the importance of celebrating Christmas at the right time in the rhythm of the liturgical year to raise awareness of the pilgrimage of faith.

Abstract

Music has the ability to touch the emotional, psychological, and spiritual dimensions of human life. From a biblical perspective, music functions not only as a part of worship but also as a means of spiritual healing, as seen in the story of David playing the harp to soothe King Saul's mental illness (1 Samuel 16:14–23). In the Batak cultural context, traditional music such as gondang, tortor, and ende also has a strong spiritual function as a medium for prayer, comfort, and emotional healing, building solidarity and community strength. This study uses a qualitative approach through literature review to examine the role of music as spiritual therapy based on biblical examples and its relevance in Batak tradition. The results show that music plays not only a theological role but also an important pastoral tool in the lives of the Batak people. Therefore, the church needs to develop contextual music services that are able to address the emotional and spiritual needs of the contemporary Batak congregation.

Abstract

Migration is a global phenomenon that continues to grow alongside advances in digital technology, but this development has also given rise to rampant job vacancy scams on social media that ensnare prospective migrant workers. Many victims suffer material losses, loss of documents, violence, and even exploitation as a result of illegal recruitment. This study uses a literature review method to analyze the forms of digital fraud and examine the role of the church in providing pastoral care for victims. The results of the study show that the church has a moral and spiritual responsibility to provide holistic services through the four pastoral functions according to Clebsch and Jaekle: healing, strengthening, guiding, and reconciling. This assistance is not only spiritual in nature, but also manifested in concrete actions such as legal aid, counseling, protection, digital literacy education, and the use of technology for online services. This study emphasizes that the church needs to be an agent of love and restoration amid the challenges of the digital age, while also maintaining the dignity of migrant workers as the image and likeness of God.
