Abstract

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) poses a unique challenge, with distinct epidemiology and aggressive behavior. Chemotherapy plays a central role in NPC treatment, yet its impact on renal parameters remains a nuanced domain. This retrospective cohort study at Santa Elisabeth Hospital, Batam, delves into the dynamic interplay between chemotherapy and renal function in NPC patients. Electronic medical records of NPC patients undergoing chemotherapy were analyzed, focusing on urea levels, creatinine levels, and glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Statistical analyses, including paired t-tests and subgroup analyses based on chemotherapy regimens, were employed. Initial chemotherapy cycles induced a transient elevation in urea and creatinine levels, indicative of potential renal stress. Subsequent cycles revealed a trend toward stabilization or mild decline. GFR demonstrated a progressive but acceptable reduction, varying across chemotherapy regimens. Platinum-based regimens correlated with more pronounced alterations in urea and creatinine levels, while taxane-containing regimens exhibited a distinct impact on GFR. Patterns observed offer insights into personalized treatment approaches, guiding clinicians in optimizing therapeutic efficacy while safeguarding renal health. This research contributes not only to immediate patient care but also to the broader landscape of oncological knowledge, influencing future research agendas and evidence-based guidelines.

Abstract

Cervical Herniated Nucleus Pulposus (HNP) surgery, particularly using the anterior discectomy method, is a common intervention to address the debilitating symptoms associated with disc herniation in the cervical spine. While the immediate goals of surgery include pain relief and neurological improvement, the impact on sleep quality remains a relatively underexplored aspect. This research aims to investigate the differences in sleep quality among patients undergoing anterior discectomy for cervical HNP surgery, offering insights into the broader implications for postoperative recovery. A prospective cohort study was conducted, involving patients diagnosed with cervical HNP scheduled for anterior discectomy. Sleep quality assessments were performed preoperatively and at defined intervals postoperatively using validated tools such as the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and subjective sleep diaries. Surgical procedures followed established protocols, and data were analyzed using statistical methods to identify significant differences in sleep metrics. The analysis revealed statistically significant improvements in various sleep quality metrics postoperatively. Participants experienced reduced sleep latency, increased sleep duration, and diminished disturbances during the night. The overall perceived sleep quality showed a notable enhancement. Short-term improvements were particularly pronounced, though some measures exhibited a gradual return toward baseline levels over time. Subgroup analyses highlighted variations in sleep outcomes based on factors such as age, preoperative pain levels, and surgical complications.

Abstract

Hand hygiene stands as a cornerstone in infection prevention within healthcare settings, with implications for patient safety and healthcare worker well-being. This research delves into the comparative effectiveness of two fundamental hand hygiene methods handwashing with soap and hand rubbing with handrub specifically among nurses, who play a pivotal role in the frontline defense against infectious threats. A prospective, randomized controlled trial design was employed to compare the efficacy of handwashing with soap and hand rubbing with handrub among a diverse cohort of 100 registered nurses. Randomization and allocation concealment were implemented to minimize biases. The primary outcome measure was the reduction in bacterial counts on the hands of nurses, assessed through standardized swabbing techniques and microbiological cultures at baseline, immediately post-intervention, and at follow-up intervals. The findings reveal a statistically significant superiority of hand rubbing with handrub over handwashing with soap in reducing bacterial counts among nurses. Immediate post-intervention assessments demonstrated a marked reduction in bacterial counts in the hand rubbing group, with sustained effects observed over follow-up intervals. Subgroup analyses across different clinical units and years of nursing experience consistently favored hand rubbing.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of antioxidant supplementation with vitamins E and C on endometrial thickness in mice subjected to high-intensity exercise. Endometrial health plays a crucial role in reproductive physiology, and exercise-induced alterations in endometrial thickness can have implications for fertility outcomes. A total of X female mice were randomly assigned to experimental groups receiving a combination of vitamins E and C or placebo, while control groups remained sedentary. Endometrial thickness was measured using non-invasive imaging techniques and validated through histological analysis. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences in endometrial thickness between experimental groups, with mice receiving antioxidant supplementation demonstrating an increase in endometrial thickness compared to controls. Furthermore, variations in endometrial thickness were observed among different exercise groups, highlighting the impact of exercise intensity on reproductive physiology. These findings suggest that antioxidant supplementation may mitigate exercise-induced alterations in endometrial thickness, potentially preserving endometrial integrity and enhancing reproductive function. The study underscores the importance of considering exercise intensity and duration in modulating reproductive health and offers translational implications for clinical practice and future research endeavors aimed at optimizing fertility outcomes in physically active individuals.
