Abstract

The background of this study is based on the phenomenon of stress that often occurs among students and has a negative impact on the well-being of students, namely academic stress. The results of the initial interview showed that some excellent students had experienced stress due to academic pressure, competition with peers, and pessimism about their own abilities. As a treatment effort, it is used with Cognitive restructuring techniques applied through the husnudzon approach (good prejudices) with positive affirmations. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of husnudzon with positive affirmations in reducing academic stress in excellent students. The type of research is quantitative with experimental design one group pre-test and post test, and involved 12 students of Class XII were selected through purposive sampling technique. The instrument used was the Sarafino and Smith academic stress scale. The Data were analyzed using Paired Sample t-Test to measure differences in students ' academic stress levels before and after treatment. The results of statistical analysis showed that the average score of academic stress decreased from 95.75 (pretest) to 76.17 (posttest). Paired samples t-test obtained the value of Sig. (2-tailed) by 0.000 (p < 0.05), which indicates a significant difference between before and after the intervention. Thus, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted which means husnudzon with positive affirmations has an effect on reducing the level of academic stress in Class XII superior students at SMA Wachid Hasyim 1 Surabaya.

Abstract

Mental health is a basic aspect of human life that demands an integrative approach. Ibn Hazm Al-Andalusi (994-1064 CE) offered a concept of the soul that combines the rational, emotional, and spiritual dimensions, which is still quite relevant to address contemporary mental health challenges. This study aims to explore Ibn Hazm's thoughts on the concept of the soul, mental illness, and its healing methods, and analyze their relevance in the context of modern psychology. Using qualitative methods with content analysis. The results in this study are (1) the soul as an eternal entity that is the center of morality and human consciousness, which consists of rational and affective aspects. (2) the main root of mental illness consists of three things-psychological problems (such as envy and pride), excessive love of the world, and despair (3) To overcome this, Ibn Hazm compiled an integrated method of healing the soul through self-introspection, correct knowledge, moral training, simplicity of life, and the power of love. This shows that Ibn Hazm's approach is able to enrich contemporary psychological interventions, especially in aspects of spirituality and moral balance. In addition, Ibn Hazm's thought offers an important contribution to the development of Islamic psychology based on cultural and religious values. This research is expected to serve as a foundation for further studies on the integration of classical Islamic concepts with modern mental health practices.

Abstract

This article aims to conduct a comparative analysis of the concept of spirituality offered by two prominent modernist Muslim thinkers of the 20th century, Haji Abdul Malik Karim Amrullah (HAMKA) from Indonesia and Fazlur Rahman from Pakistan, as their intellectual response to the challenges of modernity that threaten the relevance of traditional Islamic spirituality. Using in-depth textual analysis and conceptual comparison methods, this study critically examines the main works of both figures, focusing on HAMKA’s Tasauf Moderen and Fazlur Rahman’s ideas on Qur’anic hermeneutics. The study results show that although both share the goal of revitalizing Islamic spirituality to make it functional and relevant, they take fundamentally different approaches. HAMKA undertakes a reform of Sufism from within the tradition, centred on moral education (akhlak) and pastoral care for a mass audience. In contrast, Fazlur Rahman undertakes a radical methodological reconstruction that makes Qur’anic ethics, explored through double movement hermeneutics, the foundation of spirituality oriented toward taqwa (moral-historical responsibility) and philosophical-critical. The conclusion of this research affirms that both models, HAMKA’s accessible reformist-pastoral approach and Rahman’s methodologically robust reconstructive-philosophical approach, though different, collectively offer a rich and complementary intellectual and ethical framework. Implicitly, their thoughts provide vital conceptual resources for contemporary Muslim societies in navigating complex challenges such as religious extremism, consumerist materialism, and secularism, while paving the way for future syntheses of Islamic thought.
