Abstract

This study explores the use of TikTok as a medium for learning English, specifically targeting English as a Foreign Language learners (EFL). TikTok, as a widely popular social media platform, offers a unique opportunity for users to engage with diverse video content that can enhance their English skills, particularly in pronunciation, fluency, and comprehension. The primary objective of this research is to examine how EFL learners utilize TikTok to improve their English and to understand the impact of this platform on their learning process. The study employs a qualitative case study method, with data collected through in-depth interviews, participant observations, and analysis of TikTok content used by the participants. The findings reveal that TikTok is an effective tool for improving English skills among EFL learners. Participants reported significant improvements in pronunciation, fluency, and comprehension, along with increased motivation and interest in learning English due to TikTok's interactive and entertaining approach. This research contributes to the field of language education by highlighting the potential of digital media as an innovative and engaging learning tool. English educators are encouraged to incorporate TikTok into their teaching strategies to facilitate the development of English skills.

Abstract

This study explored English education students' perceptions of Instagram's English quiz filter feature and its impact on their learning motivation. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation to address the need for engaging English learning media. The findings revealed that students view the quiz filter as engaging, enjoyable, and beneficial for improving vocabulary, grammar, and formal exam preparation like TOEFL, offering practice questions and immediate feedback. The tool's alignment with students' technological habits makes it a flexible and motivating learning medium, fostering a supportive environment where mistakes are seen as learning opportunities. Intrinsic motivation, driven by curiosity and a desire to improve English skills, enhances students' consistent use of the quiz filter. However, while the feature offers significant benefits, the study also highlights social media's potential to distract, emphasizing the need for careful management to maintain learning effectiveness

Abstract

This study explores the influence of teaching practice experiences on pre-service English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers' cultural sensitivity, specifically their sensitivity to school culture, and examines how this cultural sensitivity impacts their teacher identity formation. Employing a qualitative case study approach, the research involved interviews with three pre-service EFL teachers. Thematic analysis was used to interpret the data, revealing several key findings. The study found that teaching practice significantly enhanced pre-service EFL teachers' awareness of school culture, encompassing the distinct academic environment and customs encountered in schools compared to their campus experiences. Additionally, this experience improved their classroom management, selection of teaching methods, and fostered greater patience and confidence in their teaching roles. Moreover, increased cultural sensitivity positively influenced the development of their professional identities, highlighting the importance of emotional factors such as a sense of belonging to the teaching profession, preparedness for the classroom, and self-assurance. Overall, the study underscores that teaching practice not only deepens pre-service teachers' understanding of school culture but also equips them emotionally and professionally for their future careers.

Abstract

Differentiated learning represents a key aspect of the independent curriculum, granting teachers the flexibility to select appropriate teaching methods. However, many teachers face challenges in implementing differentiated learning, and some still lack a clear understanding of its concept. Therefore, effective strategies are essential to enhance the teaching and learning process. This research aimed to explore the teaching strategies employed by teachers and analyze how they implement differentiated learning in English lessons. Using a qualitative approach with a case study design, the study involved two English teachers and two students as participants. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using data reduction, data display, and conclusion verification. Data validity was ensured through source triangulation. The findings revealed that teachers utilized strategies such as motivation, brainstorming, ice-breaking activities, games, small group discussions, LRD (Listen-Read-Discuss), vocabulary drills, and demonstrations. For differentiated content, teachers incorporated books, videos, and the Merdeka Mengajar platform to vary learning materials. Differentiated processes were implemented by forming heterogeneous groups based on prior assessments. In terms of differentiated products, students were tasked with presenting worksheet results and writing essays following the teacher's instructions.

Abstract

Speaking is an activity that everyone often does, especially in English. Speaking activities are never separated from them, such as making conversation, asking for help, suggesting, and the others. This study aimed to determine non- English students' strategies to acquire their speaking ability. The data collection method used qualitative methods, namely, collecting the open-ended questionnaire from Non-English Department students. The result shows that 68% of 114 respondents are not fluent in speaking English, and less than 6% are not capable of speaking English. It can be concluded that most respondents who can speak English are of elementary school age, and less than 3% are of kindergarten age. The difficulties usually encountered are pronouncing and speaking in English, which is about 32%, and less in 1% because they do not understand the word's meaning. Furthermore, the data shows that about 53% of students used entertainment to learn English, such as music, video games, etc. The trimmer is about 4% they are using an application to learn English. The dispelling myth of learning English is a typical justification for adopting a second language teaching strategy or approach based on first language acquisition that emerges from time to time. In addition, it can be concluded that the dispelling myth of learning English is still the same from time to time. Based on the research, mainly the students use repetition, imitation, natural order, no translation, and grammatical conceptualization in teaching.

Abstract

The development of technology can be beneficial for both lecturers to support the teaching and students in language learning progress. Artificial Intelligence has gained particular attention in language instruction these days. It served as a useful addition to language instruction, particularly when it came to teaching pronunciation. Informatics students at the Islamic University of Riau had a lack of pronunciation, especially in pronouncing things about computers in English. Because of that reason, the researcher helped them to find a suitable application that could improve their pronunciation ability. The purpose of this study was to explore the way students learn speaking through mobile application use in the Informatics Engineering Department at the Islamic University of Riau and to know their perception of using ELSA Speak as an Automatic Speech Recognition application. Quantitative methods were used to measure the percentage of students’ perceptions after using the ELSA Speak application.

Abstract

This study explores a semiotic metaphorical representation of John Donne’s “The Flea”. Through a detailed examination and interpretation of the linguistic features and structures used in the poem, the study uncovers the underlying meaning and significance behind the metaphors used by Donne. It examines the use of symbols, language choice, allusion, lexical items, and allegories and how they are recontextualised as semiotic resources to create a multi-layered representation. Data for the study is drawn from John Donne’s poetic text, “The Flea”. Using Halliday and Matthiessen’s Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) framework, the study aims to deconstruct how Donne employs language to convey complex meaning through his metaphysical masterpiece. AntConc software is also used to determine the frequency of the poem’s most frequently used lexical items. Findings from this study provide a deeper understanding of the poet’s intention and contribute to the existing body of literature on semiotic representation, metaphorical exploration, and lexical density that help to depict the overall beauty of the structure of the poem. The study also provides insights into the complex relationship between linguistics and literary analysis and reveals how such a symbiotic relationship enhances the teaching and learning of stylistics from an SFL perspective.

Abstract

Translation is a process of rendering one meaning from source text into target text, consequently the translator is expected to understand both linguistically and culturally related to the target text comprehensively. This research aims to investigated how are strategies of translation applied in English psychological terms that translated into Indonesian, describing in detail the process of transferring meaning from the source text to the target text to obtain factual data and information related to the translation strategies and principles used by the translator. The method applied in this research is qualitative. The data are taken from the book by Daniel Kahneman entitled Thinking, Fast and Slow. The data are words and phrases that belong to psychological terms, then data were analysed using Andrew Chesterman translation strategies. Result of the research shows that from the data that have been collected, 8 out of 30 strategies is applied in the translation, that is literal translation 35 data, loan 2 data, calque 14 data, transposition 4 data, unit shift 10 data, emphasis change 3 data, paraphrase 8 data and cultural filtering (adaptation) 24 data. The most dominant strategy used in translating English psychological terms in Daniel Kahneman’s Thinking, Fast and Slow into Indonesian is literal translation.

Abstract

This study aims to design a vocabulary test for College Students of Office Administration Study Program at Akademi Sekretari dan Manajemen Indonesia Desanta. The research design of this study was Reaseach and Development (R&D) and it applied ADDIE Model. The steps of the model are Analysis, Design, Develop, Implementation and Evaluation. The type of data of this research was quantitative data. The research instrument was multiple-choice vocabulary test. The findings showed that the multiple-choice vocabulary test was reliable and valid and able to use as a well-designed vocabulary test to measure the vocabulary mastery of the students. It can be seen from the discrimination power, difficulty level, validity, and reliability of the product obtained from the score of the students’ answers.

Abstract

English language subject which is taught in Vocational High School does not seem suitable with the needs of the students who study in specific field of study, especially in culinary. Based on this current situation, the present research and development study developed English materials for culinary students by using skill-based approach in which it includes the objective of performance and competence accomplishments. Began with needs analysis process, it was done before the development of the materials and it was conducted in SMKN 3 Malang. The needs analysis is aimed at finding the students’ needs toward English for culinary major and the target students were the tenth graders who are taking culinary major. The steps in this needs analysis were determining the instruments to collect the data, designing the blueprint of the instruments, constructing the instruments based on the blueprints, collecting the data in the field, and analyzing the data. In these current needs analysis, two instruments will be used, namely questionnaire and interview. Thus, the final product of these English materials for culinary purpose is expected to give fruitful contribution in the future for both teacher and student during the teaching and learning process of English language.
