Abstract

Amphibians are among the most threatened vertebrates, with over 40% of species facing extinction. Their reproductive strategies, ranging from oviparity to viviparity and complex parental care behaviours, are highly specialised and adapted to specific ecological conditions. However, these strategies are increasingly jeopardised by habitat destruction, climate change, pollution, invasive species, and diseases like chytridiomycosis. This article explores the reproductive adaptations of endangered amphibians, highlighting the challenges to their survival and the opportunities for conservation. Conservation efforts such as habitat restoration, ex-situ breeding programmes, assisted reproduction technologies, and community involvement offer hope for reversing population declines. Case studies, including the success of Axolotl conservation and the failure to save the Golden Toad, emphasise the need for integrated approaches to tackle multifaceted threats. By addressing reproductive ecology and implementing innovative solutions, we can safeguard amphibian biodiversity and their ecological roles for future generations.

Abstract

Pesticides are chemical compounds used in controlling plant pests. The use of pesticides not in accordance with the threshold value can cause health risks for farmers. This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of pesticide use patterns, the risk of Occupational Diseases (PAK) due to pesticide exposure, and the pattern of use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in local farmers and transmigration farmers in Purwodadi village. The approach used in this study is a qualitative method with a phenomology design, in-depth interview data collection techniques, participatory observation and documentation, with interview guidelines starting from the pattern of pesticide use that will explore the types of pesticides and how to use them, then explore the symptoms of diseases caused by pesticides in farmers and the use of PPE, by exploring experiences and reasons for using PPE. The results of this study indicate that local farmers are better at managing the dose and time of pesticide spraying than transmigration farmers, who often use excessive doses due to lack of knowledge. The risk of PAK in local and transmigration farmers is at risk of cardiovascular disease, COPD, cancer and dermatitis with symptoms felt by farmers, although local farmers tend to know the risks of pesticide exposure, and transmigration farmers consider only factors of work fatigue and age. The use of PPE among farmers is still low, especially among transmigration farmers due to economic factors and discomfort.

Abstract

Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome is a congenital condition resulting from Müllerian agenesis, characterized by the absence or underdevelopment of the uterus and upper two-thirds of the vagina, while maintaining a normal female phenotype and karyotype (46,XX). This case report details the presentation, diagnosis, and management of a 24-year-old female patient with primary amenorrhea due to MRKH syndrome. The patient presented with typical secondary sexual characteristics and an absence of menstruation. Diagnostic imaging, including ultrasonography and laparoscopy, confirmed the absence of the uterus and the presence of normal ovaries and fallopian tubes, consistent with Type I MRKH syndrome. Management options, including reproductive counseling and vaginal reconstruction techniques, were discussed to address the patient’s physical and psychological well-being. Surgical exploration ruled out other associated anomalies. This case highlights the importance of early diagnosis, multidisciplinary management, and patient counseling to improve quality of life and provide clarity regarding reproductive possibilities for MRKH patients.

Abstract

The kidneys play a vital role in filtering toxins from the blood, producing hormones, and maintaining metabolic processes in the body. However, kidney diseases, including kidney stones, kidney infections, and kidney failure, are increasingly prevalent due to poor lifestyle choices. Expert systems, designed to simulate the decision-making capabilities of specialists, are gaining prominence in diagnosing various diseases, including kidney disorders. This study employs a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) methodology to analyze eight recent articles on web-based expert systems for kidney disease diagnosis. The review examines various expert system approaches, including Certainty Factor, Dempster Shafer, and Forward Chaining, and their effectiveness in diagnosing conditions like kidney stones, acute kidney failure, and chronic kidney disease. The results reveal that while these systems offer reliable diagnoses and are accessible across multiple platforms, there is a need for further research in expanding the range of diagnosable diseases and refining diagnostic criteria. Suggestions for future work include incorporating user-specific data, such as gender and lifestyle, and exploring alternative diagnostic approaches like fuzzy logic systems. This study contributes valuable insights into the development of more comprehensive and accessible web-based expert systems for kidney disease diagnosis, which could support healthcare practitioners and patients alike in the timely detection and management of kidney-related conditions.
